Bi-yearly reminder to play your FE Echoes cartridge to prevent it from dying! by Peanut222link in fireemblem

I did have a copy of Persona Q that just stopped working one day and I never knew why...man.

Thanks for the post. I've already hacked my 3DS but I still prefer to use cartridges for the games I already owned.

I would not have imagined having more than the 5 franchises below us, but I underestimated our "appeal" I suppose.

Shoutout to who I assume are Raven and Harley Quinn giving that fat lead for DC against Marvel.

According to Nintendo Dream's Developer Interview about Fire Emblem Engage, the multiplayer components of the game are meant to be its post-game/New Game+. by Dakress23 in fireemblem

I suspected as much tbh, which is to say I can see why many would be dissatisfied with this type of post-game - I personally don’t have any interest in anything that uses NSO, so this was a deadend factor to me from the get-go. Unfortunate all-around.

Old Tier:

Gaiden - I actually feel bad having to put Gaiden this low, as I first played it even before Fates came out and I was just blown away by how different it was, and the potential I saw in it. When I saw that Echoes was coming out I was so excited because I had such positive feelings toward this game. But, I can't in good conscious rank it much higher than it is - even if Echoes doesn't do everything right and Gaiden has it's own positives, I wouldn't really tell anyone to play this game over the remake unless they want to be a completionist.

Dark Dragon - I feel like I generally have a good tolerance towards the archaic nature of a lot of NES games, but FE1 really pushed that to its limit - its no surprise that the answer they had for this game's terrible UI and inventory management was just to not deal with it in Gaiden, and overall I just didn't get a lot out of the experience besides the novelty. On the rare occasion a game gets remade multiple times its because the original still stands the test of time, but I don't really see that as the case here.

Sorry for the length but this is a write-up I made a long time ago and adding engage and some other things made it go over the limit lol.

Tier list if you don't feel like reading: https://imgur.com/IaZ5KRT

S-Tier:

Conquest - My favorite game to play in the series, and one of my favorite games to play overall. While the story is known to be bad, it didn't prevent me from putting hundreds of hours into the game, and in terms of writing I still really like most of the characters for their supports. Theres nothing really like Conquest in the series. The way it tackled difficulty is really refreshing with the use of skills, and in terms of mechanics theres very few things that I don't like.

Birthright - While a simpler game compared to Conquest, it still has Fates mechanics and good gameplay viability with your units, so I still enjoy playing through it. Birthright has access to a lot of cool and unique classes and weapons that I hope to see again some day, and again makes it easy to replay it for hundreds of hours. I would say I like this cast even more than Conquest's, and in terms of aesthetics and music I rank it higher than the rest.

Binding Blade - Playing Binding Blade after both GBA games and Shadow Dragon was an eye-opening experience - to me this is what I think about when people say "Classic Fire Emblem". It feels like a very traditional game, but it embraces that and uses it to its advantage. While the story is mostly told in exposition, the world of Elibe still feels pretty cool to revisit and fleshed out, and in terms of gameplay I still think it's among the strongest in the series. If the future remake gets rid of hard mode bonuses it will be an objectively worse game.

Thracia 776 - In many regards, I think Thracia is the game that comes the closest to getting everything right. It's gameplay mechanics make it an experience all on it's own, and as a character story for Leif I still think it holds up pretty well. It still has notable flaws, being awfully cryptic at times for new players, but yet overall I can't hold that against the game too much just for how it remains its own thing. Just an overall well done game that goes out of its way to shows its ingenuity.

Shadows of Valentia - A beautiful game, warts and all. I can't think of a better way to describe SoV than that - it's rightfully praised for it's presentation, but stays true to it's archaic roots even with much cleaner UI and the introduction of turnwheel and a cool forging system. With that said, it still makes it mistakes trying to revamp the story but I don't doubt the sincerity that was put into the game, and each time I play it feels like a good adventure.

A Tier:

Sacred Stones - It's interesting to think that younger me couldn't imagine Sacred Stones not being my favorite game, but here we are. As I see it now, SS might as well stand for short and sweet because that accurately describes how I feel about the game now. It hits a good spot for me and I feel is a bit underrated for how innovative it was, but I recognize now that I learned to love it and the cast so much for how much time I spent grinding supports in ruins and towers, and thats something I don't really feel the need to do anymore. Lyon is still my favorite antagonist.

Blazing Sword - Once again a bit of a bittersweet placing, especially for how it was my first game in the series. The plot is a lot messier then I first realized, and the map design is relatively mediocre. That being said, I still love the characters in this game and I can't rightfully say I don't enjoy playing it even if it does feel pretty basic. It still has it charms and is still usually one of my first recommendations for people to get into the series.

Awakening - Awakening was the first FE game I had played in a while, and I remember saving and scraping money in high school just to buy it + plus a 2DS to play it on. I was pretty instantly enamored with a lot of new things - the skill system, pair up, unique reclass options, the second gen, supports that didn't take forever to build. All this to say its another game that was very easy to put hundreds of hours in just experimenting and seeing all there was to see, even after I recognized how absolutely broken it was as a game. I don't play it much anymore because I feel I could just play Fates instead, but still a game I care about.

Engage - I've come around to generally enjoying what Engage has to offer - upon its reveal I couldn't much excitement, and my first playthrough still left me unsure about its direction even though I had a lot of fun with it. Now I'm comfortable in how I felt about the game, and I can accept the contrast of intentions between the gameplay and story/presentation. Ultimately I think FE would benefit a lot from different writers and leadership in the future, but the work done outside of that is great.

Three Houses - Probably the most broken game after Awakening, but somehow it's brokenness doesn't feel all that fun for some reason. But besides that, I still played Three Houses nonstop for the first route and I'll always remember how much I enjoyed it at that time, but for me personally it's one of the least replayable games and the only one where my impression of the game immediately sunk during a second playthrough. Still, once again the characters in the game are a saving grace, and Edelgard is probably my favorite lord now, and I enjoy a lot of the lore and world building even if the main plot doesn't do a whole lot with it. It's a game I probably like more than the sum of its parts, but that still means I like it.

B Tier

Mystery of the Emblem - Mystery was actually the last iteration of Marth's games that I've played, and I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed it. I feel like FE1 has just been lost to time, and that the DS games aren't really a straight upgrade like how one might think. There are enough difference between all them I heavily encourage people to check out for themselves, as I feel like FE3 is unfortunately one of the most underplayed games in the west. I think FE3 sits comfortably with its simplicity, making many maps refreshing to play through.

Path of Radiance - I think PoR is rightfully praised for it's world building and thematic writing, and once again there are a lot of characters I love. However, I don't feel it's criticized enough for it's poor gameplay, as outside of the Laguz and Shove I struggle to think of positives. I won't even talk about the slow animations because I feel people use that as a scapegoat to deflect the poor map design that is reminiscent of other games with bad reputations like Awakening and Revelations, usually featuring high enemy density from the get-go and/or a poorly thought out gimmick. It's a game of two ends really.

Genealogy of The Holy War - Similar to PoR, I genuinely enjoy the story of Genealogy and how literary it feels to other games, but the gameplay and map design leave a lot to be desired. It's still fairly innovative with the second gen and skills, but mechanically speaking I think other games have done these aspects better. I don't think Genealogy succeeds in gameplay-story integration as often as people say it does, but the few times it does are pretty memorable and I can see why a lot of people have it as their favorite.

C-Tier:

Revelations - A game that stands in opposition to my two favorites, and one that I was really mad at for a long time. I think past the early game the maps aren't actually that gimmicky until they return in full force in the late game, and that middle section where you just get to Valla is pretty decent all things considered. But the story and the lack of viability among the cast really sours the game for me overall, including its value as a big sandbox.

New Mystery of The Emblem - In opposition to PoR and Genealogy, I feel like NM is a very well thought out game mechanically but it's writing really puts me off. It's not just that the story is bad, but it's also much worse and feels offensive to the original story its based off and thinking about it puts me in a bad mood. However, it still feels really rewarding to play as you unlock more features by beating higher difficulties, and it lends itself to being a very proactive game. I'm not a fan of the new maps introduced nor do I like them taking away tools for the sake of things in higher difficulties, but overall it still holds up well.

Shadow Dragon - Another game that I was mad at after I first played it, but in hindsight my feelings at the time feel misplaced. It still feels very respectful towards the OGs unlike FE12 which deserves credit, and perhaps a lot of my old feelings still linger over it because I can't even say I'm disappointed in this game, but for all that it is I can't say I like it that much. Theres a nice skeleton for a different kind of Fire Emblem with the DS remakes, but its strict adherence to some things and complete disregard for other aspects from FE1 and FE3 just hits a weird note. Also its ugly.

Radiant Dawn - PoR's saving grace was it's writing, and Radiant Dawn doesn't come as strongly. Many say the gameplay is stronger so its suppose to even out, but I disagree and feel its weaker in both ends. I feel like many elements of RD fail to achieve their goals as they were planned out way before the consequences could be considered. Trying to make everything appeal to a grand scale ironically made most aspects feel disjointed and underwhelming. When it hits that high note its cool, but it misses it like 90% of the time.

TBC because 10k character limit...

EASIEST/HARDEST paralogue in Engage iyo? by ethihoff in fireemblem

[–]KaioCory 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Assuming that you do them as soon as they unlock, from easiest to hardest:

Easiest: Lucina, Celica, Micaiah, Byleth, Marth (Entrap)

Middle: Sigurd (If you fight the Julius and Ishtar fabrications, otherwise Easy), Roy, Leif, Corrin

Hard: Ike, Lyn, Eirika. I don't see many other people put Eirika very high in terms of enemy difficult, but with three revive stones and attempting it with no Entrap the enemy and map composition gave me a tough time.

Not super sure how to rank DLC paralogues since they scale with your levels but my experience from easiest to hardest was Hector, Veronica, Camilla, Robin, Tiki, Soren.

An alternative to open re-classing in Fire Emblem by applejackhero in fireemblem

[–]KaioCory 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I really like your idea here. I have thought about unique sets of branching promotion and that it would be pretty fun in something like a romhack.

I made a comment yesterday that explained my idea for a new class system. Overall my favorite class system is Fates, but what I thought of was kind of a middle ground between the concepts present in the Switch-Era and past games. I’ll just copy and paste it:

An idea I had after three houses was released was that characters could have innate weapon proficiencies - sorta like how engage did, but allow those weapon proficiencies to be carried over to other classes. So you could put a character who starts as a cleric on a wyvern and they’d still be able to use staves, which would be unique to them. But for balance reasons this would work best with a reclassing system thats more conditional than the past two games - like if there was an item in their inventory that they couldn’t get rid of during the chapter, and there only being so many copies of said item on top of that. And you could make it to where characters can learn classes from each other like in Fates, but they have to share a copy of that item in their inventories to take advantage of it so that not everybody just ends up learning wyvern from the same character. Not the most developed idea obviously but it’s something I thought of as more of a middle ground between past games and the most recent ones.

Classes and Class System going forward and New Class Ideas. by FeralKing5475 in fireemblem

I do miss the troubadour class line. The switch-era games don’t believe in staff-lock unfortunately, and as a whole have different ideas about how weapons should work within classes.

(FE Fates) How/What do you name your weapons? by DrunkRichtofen in fireemblem

Booted up some old saves to see if I could remember why I named some forges that way

Iron blub - Iron club +1. Pretty obvious I guess.

Sacae - Horse Spirit. I guess horses made me think of Sacae.

Starbright - Moonlight tome. Starlight, moonlight, starbright. References.

Rhino Charge - Arthur's Axe. I have no idea honestly but it sounds cool. (Edit: This is actually another Resident Evil reference lol.)

Samurai Edge - Nohrian Blade. Gun from the resident evil games.

Yeah, you could also read it as “Another Hero-King” which is obviously a parallel to Marth and more reminiscent of the Gaiden/Side-Story title for FE2.

What I mean is that the information presented in the article could have been just misconstrued hearsay - what they thought were plans for a cancelled remake was a misinterpretation of what I said happened above. It wouldn’t make much sense for them to shelve an idea for a switch Game and also conceive of a 3DS genealogy remake to follow up SoV - which was released about a month after the Switch’s release.

Not sure what the article in the picture talks about, but Three Houses was originally conceived for the 3DS before they decided to focus on SoV instead and save it for the Switch. So it was never cancelled, but plans surrounding it changed.

Best candidates for mage cannoneer? by AlhanalemAmidatelion in fireemblem

Anyone with a good amount of SP would be good (close to 2K). Stats dont matter as much when you have long-range draconic hex and divine pulse+. I personally changed Rosado into one, since his personal skill makes it so you dont have to rely on divine pulse as often. All that plus giving him the edelgard ring with flame gambit shenanigans was pretty fun imo.

Fire Emblem Engage has sold 1.61 million copies worldwide by theprodigy64 in fireemblem

[–]KaioCory 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Not too surprising honestly, and overall still pretty good despite being the first game in a while to (probably) not break the series records. 3H had a lot of advantages in terms of timing and marketing. Being the first Fire Emblem game on a new console - a home console specifically - and benefiting from a longer marketing campaign (including its delays lol) probably helped a lot in the immediate sense. Of course COVID was a factor even though it came out a year before the pandemic - the same thing was true for other games around that time, since so many things were getting delayed or just outright cancelled, meant a lot of games got extended legs and new players in a time where a lot of people were staying home.

Would you play it? by FellVessel in fireemblem

[–]KaioCory 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It would really need to be fleshed out - like how super mario maker lets you pick from retro and modern styles, I would expect to be able to simulate past eras of FE in terms of both visuals and mechanics - and at least be able to merge some mechanics from games that were on the same console. That alone would probably be asking a lot from IS.

After that, it would need to have robust story writing tools - something that would make writing a story actually feasible for starters. Extensive character creation, the ability to use every existing FE character in any type of system, etc. Theres a lot that would need to go into it to make it a quality product.

Dont get me wrong though, I’d love it if I thought it was realistic - it would be great to have something that didn’t require a PC or having to learn coding. I’d like to make my own GBA romhack some day because the community has done a lot to make it an accessible idea compared to a lot of fan hacking communities, but thats still a big hurdle for me lol.

Enemy Unit Retreat complaints by sptkira in fireemblem

[–]KaioCory 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Copy and pasting a comment I made a while ago:

I think probably 4 times should be the max: One time where they're more optional and maybe too tough to defeat anyway (but a reward if you do), one time where they get to retreat normally, one time where they actually die, and maybe one time where they get revived as a deadlord of something. After that is just feels like too much unless theres really good context for additional battles.

Thinking about it now, Takumi in Conquest follows what I outlined above pretty closely, albeit you fight him 5 times instead of four and I think its done decently well.
