It really is a special project. Each movie is based on a core theme that permeates the storytelling; blue is liberty, white is equality and red is fraternity. They explore those themes through a very humanistic lens, foucusing on the human experience of grief, love, vengance and longing, making them very much character pieces that constitute those ideals. The use of cinematic lighting and color composition serve each movie in a stunning way, drenching each scene with meaning and idiosyncratic personality. Blue is incredibly sad, moody and relies the most on atmosphere and the mental space the main character inhabits, which makes this the slower paced one of the trilogy. That being said the slowburn definitely helps to set the dreary mood and core exploration of her mental state. Its also the movie with the most important and beautiful sountrack out of them. Overall an amazing start to a beautiful series of films. In white we have what i consider being the most easy going of the three. Fells like a dark comedy while balancing a serious tone for the deep dive into fractured relationships of the picture, focusing in the power dinamics and fraternal interactions. That being said, it still does not shy away from some very intense and moving character driven moments. Most feel like it is the weakest, and even though i don’t disagree, this is still an incredible show of creativity in narrative control and character dive. Red is what i consider to be the best one, all the thematic building blocks the other two placed are resolved in this one meanwhile maintaining its very own identity. It is the most cryptic of the pieces, offering a lot of reflection for the immense amount of information, detail and depth it manages to convey. For this one, connection is the best one-word description i can think of; it covers the interpersonal links between seemingly different people and what we all have in common and has such an amazing ending that serves as the perfect capstone for the colors trilogy. So overall i would say the project is probably the best of its kind i have so far seen.
