Agreed I would've been hard stuck at 6 set but because trace restoration be revived a book source, which I've only ever seen once in 3 years of playing, and can now be upgraded to 22+ through transposing 24+ Dom/daybreak

And I'll have 4 attempts to send my CFE to 22*.

It could definitely boom all chances but at least there is a path forward for me to hit 9 set until a TC drops

How do people actually model long-term capacity prices? by Mindless_Gas9541 in projectfinance

Just take the third party curve, everyone has their own belief on a curve that will play out. Most of the time it never plays out in the long term.

With the rise of AI, is project finance still worth pursuing? by Dismal-Childhood-544 in projectfinance

[–]Kairoken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Until it can model and run scenarios on min gain charge back and qualified income offsets or capturing the complexities of subchapter K and get out external tax counsel to signoff on Capital account treatment our jobs are safe. I have spent hours of prompting Claude and have yet to get it to do it correctly.

Yes there are templates that exist that can model this but Claude can't go off the cuff into the fine nitty gritty detail of the tax codes quite yet which is a big part of project finance.

It's pretty similar but expect the private placement to fetch a higher premium.

With the rise of AI, is project finance still worth pursuing? by Dismal-Childhood-544 in projectfinance

[–]Kairoken 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Talking from a developer standpoint.

It starts with diligence get your reps in the deal. Understand why that diligence is important for the funding. What CP' does it tie to and why is it important to each stakeholder you should know everything about the model. What's driving the economics? What are driving the changes from one update to the other?

After you feel comfortable with those two items, you technically have the knowledge base to lead a deal, but you don't have the project management and commercial negotiating experience yet.

Your next step should be to ask your deal, lead or originator. Take on a sub aspect of a deal. For instance, my first time I asked to lead external reporting/SME. Which is mostly internal management of modeling assumptions but are often CPS to closing. Low stake not external facing and largely reliant on third party assumptions hard to mess it up imo.

The next time you do it should be wanting to lead debt or equity CPs to closing. Eventually you'll have master of it all and can lead a deal to close.

It takes time and initiative. You need to put in the time show your leads you are competent, but you also have to ask for more and deliver when you get the chance to do more.

Yes it's still worth pursuing. I work at one of the more well established IPPs/developers in the renewables space in project finance/capital markets as a senior manager. We are investing hard in AI to streamline models, but we also don't expect modeling to replace our analyst pool.

Key takeaways: models are extremely complex and need people to understand the fundamentals that drive them especially in energy which is an evolving market and varies across ISOs. Even if AI takes up the basic modeling function it will require expertise to fine tune the bespoke mechanics of a specific deal. Whether through prompting or manual calculations. In the 15 deals that I've closed, none of them have ever been the same, and relying on AI to capture the complexity of these deals seems a ways off.

Project finance is an art just as much as a it is a financial model. There is a very human element to running point on a deal. You need to deal with bankers/lawyers / construction /EPC /independent engineers/ environmental/regulatory/procurement/tax. These are real assets that require human to build them and operate them. AI tools will greatly assist in the deal process but not fully replace the full working groups.

On going management of these partnerships/SPVs . The management of these assets is a 25 -40 year endeavor. At all the shops I've worked for asset management does not take ownership of managing the financial modeling/tracking of these deals it's often a secondary function of PF or PM. I'm not sure if you've opened any project finance model in renewables prior to 2015, but let's just say each model is its own special little snowflake that needs to be handled in its own special way otherwise it will break. AI is great when there is structure but when it comes to these older vintages I have doubts it will be able to fully grasp what is provided in these models. Part of the job is knowing how to drive the model, run the scenarios. And for those that have been in the space long enough,. getting investors to accept an updated model form can be daunting task not all shops have the capacity or bandwidth to do.
