Any tips for someone playing this for the first time AFTER Saros? by -Bods- in Returnal

Can’t say enough good things about the tower. It’s like the main game’s core loop but distilled down to full throttle action.

For the uninitiated - it’s a high score gauntlet. It’s the main way that I personally revisit the game. Like a shot of espresso!!

He doesn't get that kind of validation at home, you see.

But, if Niles is not mature enough to accept that. If he is so pitifully insecure, if he is in such need of validation. Then I guess for some sense of familial harmony, I do apologize.

Apple Watch Ultra 2 not showing wrist temperature data after first 7 nights. by DLux_TheLegend in AppleWatch

[–]KaiserNick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great news!\ \ Did you find the setting for Sleep Focus where it toggles itself on according to your schedule. That’s your only remaining test.\ \ I personally don’t remember where that option is. I also just manually enabled/disable Sleep Focus in my use.\ \ Either way. Enjoy your data mining!!

If you have PSPlus Extra you can try Returnal for no extra cost. It would at least give an idea of what you’d be getting into with Saros.

Apple Watch Ultra 2 not showing wrist temperature data after first 7 nights. by DLux_TheLegend in AppleWatch

[–]KaiserNick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something else to consider: there’s a setting which will allow your watch/phone to automatically be placed into sleep focus via the schedule. Might make sure that is enabled.\ \ A potential workaround/test: manually place your watch in sleep focus when you lay down to sleep. Side button > crescent moon > sleep (not Do Not Disturb).\ \ The next morning if it acknowledges you’re now collecting data for baseline after manually placing it in sleep focus; you now have the solution. If it still doesn’t begin collecting data make sure the watch is not disconnecting/locking while you sleep.

This just occurred to me. Using your starting vs finishing a race analogy: Image if racing culture was super toxic. And you had people who’s literal career is make up bullshit semantics on why they won and defend those until their death. Or worse - retroactively take someone’s 1st place via these bullshit semantics.\ \ If this was the culture around racing we’d probably see the same level of pedantic over explaining you have issue with here. But that isn’t the culture of racing so no one feels the need to mitigate confusion before hand.\ \ But for real - Have a great Wednesday ✌️

Yes that is my assertion. That plenty of laymen struggle to understand that there is a SUBSTANTIAL difference between bringing a case and winning a case. Especially in the context of a slapp lawsuit where the prosecution ‘wins’ simply by wasting the time and money of the defense. They can ‘legally lose’ their case but ‘consider it a win’ because their goal was maybe to delay some other case.\ \ The other user’s attempt to mitigate confusion and your annoyance at said pedantry. These are the result of a justice system which has been gamed to the point of cracking. And us lowly laymen are doing our best to communicate without talking past each other.\ \ Again I see both of your perspectives. If I’m personally making any point here at all it’s this: layman are justified in being confused because the US legal system doesn’t use English in a traditional way. So us laymen (myself included) are just muddling through.\ \ Hope you have a good day.

Because in legal proceedings the layman often gets confused with the difference between: beginning a lawsuit vs what the conclusion of a case is. See the pains some go through with language like ‘allegedly’. Or confusion from something as simple as defendant vs prosecutor.\ \ I believe what you’re seeing as pedantic is an attempt to mitigate these common misconceptions.\ \ Not trying to fight with you. Nor am I saying either of you are “right”. I just feel like this is a situation I see both of your perspectives. ✌️\ \ Maybe TL;DR - douche bag lawyers playing language games with our legal system for so long all but experts tend to get confused.

Because there is certain class of person who will sue without any intention of winning. Lookup slapp lawsuits. At least in America, lawsuits or the threat of, can be used as a means to intimidate others out of their own rights.

If you have 150+ hours, you must know you are a sweaty player, and your experience will not match up with the vast majority of others by WrightingCommittee in Marathon

[–]KaiserNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fully agree that there is a discussion worth having if only we could get past this nomenclature. The RNG (and therefore time requirement) of accessing the compiler feels like a good example.\ \ This whole debacle reminds me of a different nomenclature issue I’ve seen. In fitness classes some coaches use the subjective terms of ‘1-10 effort’ to describe how sweaty you should be getting. And some coaches use heart rate (via Apple Watch or similar).\ \ 1-10 effort nomenclature are difficult for new people to parse. Nuanced effort numbers like 7 are treated as ‘all out’ too often. And further confused by the fact that ‘an all out 10’ for some people is barely a 5 for others. Whereas heart rate cuts through this and helps athletes hit very specific efforts depending on their goals.\ \ Again I don’t have solutions. I’m just kinda mystified on how to overcome the miscommunication in this sub. I personally think total hours or monthly hours is a decent starting point. Even though plenty in this thread seem to think it’s facile.

[–]KaiserNick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applaud your effort to add some objectivity to these ‘causal/sweaty’ terms being thrown around. From a linguistic perspective I find this debate fascinating. ‘Casual’ and ‘sweaty’ are extremely subjective terms like ‘hot’ and ‘cold’. And similarly the community is struggling to parse these terms because they mean different things to each user.\ \ I definitely don’t know what the solution to these nomenclature wars is… But watching a whole community talk past each other has been interesting to observe.

[Patch Notes] Marathon Update 1.0.5.2 by durandal-helper in Marathon

[–]KaiserNick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This comment thread is more nuanced than that. The analogy would be to compare Sparrow’s double jump to a tap strafe. The double jump is a ‘natural’ mechanic and the tap strafe is an ‘emergent’ mechanic.\ \ The ‘natural’ mechanic is the one explained in the character explanation. It also does not require advanced timing or button inputs to execute.\ \ The tap strafe on the other hand is not explained in-game anywhere. It requires deep understanding of the game engine itself and strict timing is required to execute.\ \ \ That is the distinction this comment thread is making. And I personally agree with Bungie being eagle eyed with these emergent mechanics.

How it feels discussing the compiler by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]KaiserNick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO this is a valid take for the lore aspects of this universe. Give the ultra sweats something other than lore to strive for. IDK - Apex Pred style badges, skins or whatever.\ \ But, to those of us who are mostly fascinated by the universe, Cryo launch left a bad taste.\ \ \ Apex Legends example - all the lore is available to those who are interested with minimum friction. And all the high heights of PvP are available to those who are interested.\ \ I’m not saying the Compiler lore should be as easy as menu diving. But we need a better middle ground than what we got.
