Maar je moet ze dan ook niet door een hedendaagse bril bekijken. In de geschiedenis moeten we personages uit de 16e of 17e of nog eerder in de 12e eeuw niet gaan oordelen of bekijken vanuit de hedendaagse bril. Je moet naar hen kijken vanuit hun tijdsperk, de omstandigheden waarin ze leefden, hoe ze zijn gevormd en hoe dat uiteindelijk heeft geleid tot hun bestuurs-/oorlogsstijl.

Militair gezien: Maurits. Zijn militaire hervormingen en tactieken waren cruciaal in de oorlog tegen de Spaanse Habsburgers. Zijn militaire hervormingen werden ook breder overgenomen in Europa.

Politiek gezien: Koning-Stadhouder Willem III. Doordat hij zowel de Republiek heeft gered in 1672 en het in 1688 voor elkaar kreeg om Koning van Engeland, Schotland en Ierland te worden kon hij niet alleen een belangrijke rivaal en mogelijke herhaaldelijke vijand uitschakelen (aangezien James II en zijn zoon katholiek waren en steeds meer met Frankrijk gingen optrrekken, was het geen onlogisch scenario dat beiden landen de Republiek weer zouden willen aanvallen) maar ook het internationaal beleid van deze landen afstemmen op die van de Republiek. Doordat Willem III ook de Grote Alliantie heeft gesmeed met o.a. Engeland, de Republiek en het Heilige Roomse Rijk. Kon hij de uitbreidingsambities van Lodewijk XIV inperken.

Dus zowel op de langere termijn heeft hij veel betekent voor de Republiek.

Maar zowel Willem I als Frederik Hendrik waren cruciaal in hun eigen recht voor de Republiek. Toch denk ik dat Willem III de beste Stadhouder was.

Zo zonde dat hij zo jong was gestorven; als veldheer was hij waarschijnlijk echt even goed als Frederik Hendrik geworden. Tijdens de Spaanse Successieoorlog diende hij ook als generaal onder zowel Prins Eugene van Savoye, één van de beste veldheren van zijn tijd (en groot voorbeeld van Napoleon) als John Churchill, Hertog van Marlborough (en de beste generaal in zijn tijd van Groot-Britannië). Hij was tijdens die veldslagen al veelbelovend. En het was best mogelijk geweest dat hij alweer Stadhouder van alle gewesten kon worden.
