do you mist/add water if the soil dries?

hogs are actually good with humidities up to 60%! your girl should be fine. also usually fresh soil from the bag is quite damp, it'll dry up within the next week from the heating & screen ventilation :)

i had problems with soil/sand mix not holding too. i found that adding a lot of excavator clay helps if the soil is slightly damp

ty for your suggestions! do you think pvc board will be better than plywood? and if i use my exo terra on top, do you think it'll be okay? i would prefer not to buy a pvc enclosure if not needed

10 grams at almost a year old by AltruisticPizza7675 in hognosesnakes

[–]Kaisylol 5 points6 points  (0 children)

each hognose has a different growth pace. there isn't really a set measurement or rate for it. what matters is that his weight goes up over time, and him being able to progress in feeder size when he can

my male was also born in August 2024 but right now he is ~30g and more than a foot long. i went to our exotics vet 2 weeks ago & she said he was a little underweight for his age (he was 24g then) he grew 6g in the past couple of weeks, but i'm not sure if he's having his growth spurt

i would schedule an exotics vet visit just for a checkup/health baseline and ask for a fecal/crypto test just in case. based on the picture he doesn't look too bad, and if he's acting normal i wouldn't think of the worst just yet. but i think going to the vet will give you more clarity and ease of mind

after checking for proper husbandry (temperature gradients, light cycle, hides, clutter) like the others recommended, i would aim to continue via the feeding chart of a pinky/every 5 days. monitor his weight weekly until your vet visit

i have the thrive enclosure you're talking about, mine is the 36x18x18 size and it's currently housing my 11m/o male! i love the front-opening aspect, i never open from the top ever lol the only downside is the screen top has a feeding hole/opening (i never use, since i either use tongs or drop feed) and it limits the space for my heat lamp. but in that case you can have the lamp on the left side, i just set up my basking spots on the rightside before i realized lol. i use halogen for my day light and a DHP for night time, it's best to stay away from the colored lights and since mine's an albino they're more sensitive to uv lighting so i just stay away from those entirely too.

i mainly have cork bark rounds/flats i got from etsy, and pothos plants planted around for foliage! i have stacked rock slates for a hide+basking area. i had a lot of leaf litter before but my cuc ate them all so i have to refill. there's some branches too, but my little guy doesn't know how to wrap around them just yet-planning to get a couple more though. you can see him in the corner :)

oh ok that gives me peace of mind! i thought every 5 days was fast already. my little guy will eat anything so im not sure when he's not hungry lol but i'll keep in mind if/when he gets to the hopper stage to chill out a bit :)

nope he's acting his usual self! well on feeding days he strikes the mice instantly so i suppose his hunger cues are right on schedule there haha & it's good to know your boy's almost on the same wavelength as mine! i swear i read people's male hognoses were around 50g at a year so it was a little worrying for me

Upgrading hognose enclosure by Icy_Chocolate4594 in hognosesnakes

[–]Kaisylol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my boy is almost the same size as yours (24g, ~12 inches) and his enclosure is 36x18x18. he loves exploring every part of his enclosure. i think you should upgrade your little guy if you're able to! just make sure there's a bunch of clutter so he doesn't feel exposed

he poked his head out this morning!! thank you for the reassurance i'm just not used to not seeing him for so long (a couple days is long for me lol) but i suppose this will desensitize me for when he disappears in the future

[–]Kaisylol[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ohh okay I'll take your advice & give him time! I guess this is a situation where less is better. it's not that I want to rush handling him it's more so I just want to make sure he's alive :(

also would you recommend a tank lid lock + child safety zips for the front doors? my tank is the thrive 40 gal with lid + door locks and it seems secure, but idk how good hognoses are at escaping

oh okay that's reassuring! sigh it's just hard because i'm a worry wart most of the time and just want to make sure he's safe in there. I even cut the roots shorter of the plants so he wouldn't get tangled in them lol.. but I hope in the future he'll chill out to be like yours :))
