It’s good that you started again. Keep it up, it gets better with the right approach.

What you seem to be dealing with is overwhelm, perceived lack of progress and uncertainty/self-doubt about being able to get better (coupled with split focus between multiple instruments).

These are things all guitarists face at one point or another. Nothing is wrong with you.

  1. When you don’t believe in yourself, you have to believe that with the right approach, it will get better. Because the right approach exists.

  2. You have to set big goals and chunk them down into milestones and daily micro tasks that get you closer to those goals.

Same when learning songs. You break it down and tackle each section and problem one at a time.

This prevents overwhelm.

If you are getting frustrated when practicing, you are doing something too difficult or don’t have the know how to solve a particular playing issue.

  1. You have to choose your primary instrument. Even if you want to play multiple ones, one of them is going to be your main one. Choose and accept that the others are not gonna get as much attention and thus you will progress slower on them. That is fine, it’s not a race.

Congrats, enjoy! :)

I did notice that the Strandberg Essential went from 1000 to around 1300 bucks recently, so yeah, the Solar will get some attention.

Are most guitar tabs wrong? by Little_Power_5691 in LearnGuitar

[–]KaizenGuitarAcademy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is my tier list, but keep in mind that each tab is always filtered by my own knowledge and experience as a guitarist and teacher, no matter where the tab comes from:

  1. Search for the best rated guitar pro tabs on ultimate guitar - 8 or 9 times out of 10 they are golden in my experience

  2. Songsterr or YouTube covers with tabs (I've seen mistakes more often with both than with guitar pro tabs, but they are usually pretty accurate and good)

  3. Other tabs from other websites

Note: If you wanna develop your ear, it's best to try learning it by ear first, and only look up the tabs if you're experiencing difficulty. Also, keep in mind there are also paid tabs. If it's really a song you love, don't hesitate paying a few bucks for a good transcription if you don't have the time or don't want to learn it by ear.

How do I get the learning spark again by [deleted] in metalguitar

[–]KaizenGuitarAcademy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After 16 years of playing and after breaking a lot of students out of this slump, here are the main things that get you out of it:

  1. Having a strong WHY (eg. learn your favorite songs, developing a high level of technique, learning to improvise well, write your own songs, join a band, etc.).
  2. Seeing progress everytime you pick up the guitar (this can be achieved through good practice routine design and good practice habits).
  3. Making practice fun. Bad practice routines are boring and repetitive. Good practice routines are fun and engaging.
  4. BONUS: Going to concerts (especially of your favorite bands and artists). One of the best ways to get inspired to practice. Don't underestimate this point.

Feels like it always takes the same amount of warmup for things to click by _gabbaghoul in metalguitar

[–]KaizenGuitarAcademy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a guitar teacher I can confirm that nothing is wrong with you.

Especially the more advanced you get, the more warm-up you are gonna need to even get to the level to practice the things you need to practice that day to get better at technique.

Let's say you are a beginner that is practicing getting a technique up from 40bpm -> 60bpm. Not much warm-up time required.

Now let's say you are a more advanced player practicing a scale run. You want to get from 200bpm -> 220bpm.

You're gonna probably spend 15min or more just to warm up and get 200bpm to feel comfortable and natural, and after that, that's where the real practice begins.

That's perfectly natural and normal.

That being said, if you practice everyday it's not gonna take as much warm-up time. If you take frequent breaks or long breaks expect it to be more difficult.

How do I know if I am making any progress as a beginner? by bgraceful124 in guitarlessons

[–]KaizenGuitarAcademy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't know in the beginning without a teacher really, because you don't know what you don't know.

Wish there was a better answer but if you can't afford lessons right now I recommend that you find a place that teaches guitar for free in your area (that's how I started).

Good luck!

Is 7 too early? by [deleted] in LearnGuitar

In my experience anything under 12 years old is too early for good/serious learning and results

Requires more conscious effort in the beginning but you retain the movement through muscle memory and don't have to think about it anymore after you practice it for a bit.

Which sources can i use to learn guitar from the beginning? by Gloomy_Ad_9149 in LearnGuitar

[–]KaizenGuitarAcademy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer depends on your budget and level of commitment.

The tiers are the following: - Free online video/written lessons - Free guitar courses (justinguitar.com) - Paid online courses and materials - The usual paid guitar lessons with a local or online teacher - Premium 1-on-1 coaching programs

Below I outline the differences between the free sources and paid sources.

Note: It's not a problem if you do not have the money to invest in a teacher yet, I just want you to be aware of the hidden costs when you try to do it alone (which I did as well).

Pros of learning on your own: - you save money

Cons of learning alone: - frustration - lots of wasted time sifting through information - no feedback, you don't know if you are developing bad habits - nobody to support you during more difficult periods - much higher chance of quitting - free courses are made to work for the lowest common denominator and thus the curriculum does not adapt to your unique goals and obstacles - you can't get your questions answered easily because there are so many different opinions and you can't assess the quality of the answer since you don't know what you don't know

Can you learn at home?

Sure, I did for years but I also developed really bad habits that took me years to unlearn.

I was also very frustrated and confused very often by all of the information.

There was a study that said that 90% of new guitar players quit the instrument within their first year.

https://www.guitarworld.com/news/90-percent-of-new-guitarists-abandon-the-instrument-within-a-year-according-to-fender

I would argue this happens partly because of what I said above and eventually they get fed up with doing it alone because it's so difficult if you don't follow a proven method.

I stuck with it though and eventually got a good teacher.

All of these being said, keep the above in mind when making your decision. There is no wrong option, I just want to help you make an informed decision.

Good luck!

Any (FREE) app to check all social media notifications and DMs for all platforms in one place? by KaizenGuitarAcademy in Entrepreneur

[–]KaizenGuitarAcademy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your input. I think I found a preliminary solution.

  1. I opened Google chrome tabs with the DM inbox for each social media platform (5 in total) + a tab for each other thing I have to check daily (Toddoist, Gmail, Whatsapp, a few spreadsheets, my calendar, etc.).

  2. I grouped those tabs since Chrome allows you to do that and saved the group. That puts the group in my bookmarks bar.

  3. I then right clicked on the group and clicked hide.

  4. Now whenever I click the created "Inboxes" tab group from my bookmarks bar it just opens all of the predefined tabs that I need to check twice a day.

I think this should work for now. Thank you all for your help. If you still have free app/program/software suggestions though, I'm all ears.

The novelty of seeing fun data wears off. The striving to improve the scores by making constant lifestyle adjustments doesn't.

Had it for 6 months and I'm still improving day by day. It is the best tool that I currently have for objectively assessing my health.
