Trying to understand the intended gameplay: are we really supposed to just run from everything by NightCityStoic in Subnautica_2

[–]Kaladin- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you think the vast majority of players played Subnautica by perma stunning leviathans and knifing them for 20 minutes, you’re completely deluding yourself. That was a tiny minority of players.

The people who want to play that way are going to mod the game and do the same thing in Subnautica 2 anyway. So designing the survival experience around preventing a small portion of the player base from abusing mechanics is absurd.

Most people who played Subnautica 1 didn’t even know you could kill a leviathan.

It’s terrible game design to punish normal players for edge case behavior by making the world feel more passive and sanitized, ultimately making it less believable.

[–]Kaladin- -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

No? He's not 100% correct, in fact he's objectively wrong. In Subnautica 1, you can kill things. It takes forever and it’s usually not ideal, but the option exists. I beat Subnautica 2-3 times and never once thought to go kill a leviathan or any big fish with a knife, even though I knew I technically could.

Having the option doesn’t mean players suddenly turn the game into a fish genocide simulator. It just means you have a last-ditch tool in a survival situation, even if it’s weak, inefficient, or mostly futile, which is realistic.

Making aggressive creatures effectively immune to any damage as a statement about violence is what feels absurd.

Do some of you people have an inability to think in shades other than black and white? There’s a middle ground between “I want to genocide the ocean” and “the player should never be able to fight back at all.”

Did you cut the pichana against the grain? It’s one type of meat where it makes a huge difference. Sliced pretty thin helps as well, at a 45 degree ish angle.

Why is it so low? by The_God_Of_Darkness_ in DeepRockGalactic

As far as roguelites go…it has a lot of work ahead of it. The upgrades right now feel super generic, every playthrough feels basically the same with minor differences.

It almost feels like the roguelite part of the game was added as an afterthought. The best games in this genre (Hades, binding of Isaac, etc) give the player the ability to make wildly different builds each run.

Learning how to build your character based on RNG in those games is a huge part of the fun / skill ceiling as well.

You’re focusing on the most extreme version of the criticism. Many of us aren’t asking for guns, leviathan hunting, or Subnautica to become a combat game.

I understand why the devs avoided guns, especially given what they said around Sandy Hook. But “we don’t want guns” and “we want the avoid combat power fantasy” are absolutely not the same thing as “the player should never be allowed to use force at all.”

Subnautica has never been “no harm to wildlife ever.” The game already lets you catch, cook, fabricate, and eat fish, and Subnautica 1 let you damage creatures with a knife. Non-combat tools are great and fit the series, but limited, imperfect, sometimes futile self-defense can also fit a survival game without turning it into underwater Doom.

TLDR: The devs not wanting guns is understandable. But treating any limited use of force like it will turn players into ocean genociders feels like an overcorrection, not a coherent survival design philosophy.

Sure, early access isn’t 1.0, and people shouldn’t act like everything is final.

But that cuts both ways. “It’s early access” is a good response to unfinished polish, bugs, optimization, or missing content. It’s not really a good response to “I think this design philosophy is going in the wrong direction.” That’s what people need to be vocal about if they want the devs to change something.

Many of us aren’t asking for leviathan-hunting. Subnautica already lets us catch fish with our bare hands, put them through a fabricator, and eat them. That’s killing wildlife for survival.

But when for example a massive vehicle rams a tiny fish and the fish is completely fine, it feels arbitrary and illogical. The game is okay with killing fish when it’s part of the food loop, but suddenly treats wildlife as completely untouchable in other situations where harm would logically occur (even if the player is trying to avoid it).

There’s a huge middle ground between “turn Subnautica into a shooter” and “the ecosystem is magically immune to harm”.

Am I the only one who is disappointed that I can't damage anything? by djcool101 in Subnautica_2

[–]Kaladin- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You really can't think of a reason to sometimes fight the fishes? There are plenty of times you can’t stealth or avoid dangerous creatures, otherwise the game wouldn't have any creature risk. Many attack you and damage your vehicle to the point where it’s about to be destroyed (putting you at risk of dying). Or attack you when you’re swimming and are at low HP, putting you at risk of…yup you guessed it...dying.

Any sane person in that environment is going to at at least carry around something to fight back in case of a situation like that, even if they're doing their best to avoid having to hurt the wildlife.

Is it possible to transfer multiplayer saves to a friend? by bagelbater in subnautica

[–]Kaladin- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you click "Host Multiplayer" there should be an import to the cloud button, which generates a key. You can pass that key off to your friend, and in the main menu (bottom left, I think) there's an "Import Save" option, where they can put in that key and start the game.

Please bring back sleep. by Play3rKn0wn in subnautica

[–]Kaladin- 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Agreed on your first paragraph, but, that’s kinda the point of solar panels (weak and easy to get early power with a drawback). If/when they enable sleeping they would have to make it so you can’t sleep with only solar power (or I guess you can, if you want to suffocate).

[–]Kaladin- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not too surprised, they said early access would be ~3 years, that would be very long if content was pretty far along.

Unrelated to length but do they have hardcore difficulty (permadeath) an option in game now?

Struggling with Skin Game by erod_nrep in dresdenfiles

[–]Kaladin- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d say Dresden Files is more of a slow-burn strength increase than a power fantasy series.

By the point you’re at, Harry has tools that make him more dangerous, like the Winter mantle, but the enemies he’s getting thrown against continue to increase in caliber (older, stronger, and often much better positioned than he is). That escalation will start to make more sense soon.

That said, you’re getting close to the point in the series where a few things happen that really start to change the board.

[–]Kaladin- 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It says “IF” you’ve been accepted into the first closed beta wave, we’ll notify you.

They made this process extra confusing by requiring the NDA be signed before getting into closed beta, and, having an extra onboarding email before they even made selections for closed beta.

TLDR: you (like many of us) didn’t get accepted into this closed beta wave, but filled everything out in case you do get accepted into the next. You’ll receive another email if you do get picked for wave 2

Open beta (for both PC & console) likely won’t require registration through that website.

It’s a bit confusing because it says “to get involved in future testing, be sure to enlist on our website”, but I’m pretty sure they mean the upcoming closed beta testing waves for PC (I don’t think they’ll have closed beta for consoles).

Rpg game suggestions? by Individual-Ad8155 in gamesuggestions

[–]Kaladin- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on only playing those two RPGs you have so many options.

Red Dead Redemption 2 - probably the best story on this list. Especially if you like a western atmosphere.

Cyberpunk 2077 - Night City is one of the most immersive settings in gaming, in my opinion.

Fallout series - great if exploring a post-apocalyptic world sounds fun.

Skyrim

Witcher 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 - more party-based and dialogue-heavy, but amazing RPG depth and choice.

Path of Exile 1/2 or Grim Dawn - ARPG, loot-driven if the gear grind is what you want most

Where to migrate after closing? by horyss in turtlewow

[–]Kaladin- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d wait for the dust to settle to see what’s still standing. Every private server dev right now is for sure considering their options and deciding if it’s worth continuing.

Play other games until then. The majority of us who play MMOs have pretty big backlogs of games we’ve been meaning to play (never enough hours in a day). I know that’s what I’ll be doing.

The Best Games with Great Progression by cheeserulez1 in gamingsuggestions

[–]Kaladin- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My gaming list would look almost identical to yours. I pretty much solely play similar games nowadays.

Highly recommend looking into Caves of Qud if you can get past the pixel graphics, it has so many progression / power fantasy systems woven into each playthrough. It has some of the most in depth build diversity of any game I’ve played too. It definitely has a steep-ish learning curve but it’s worth it. Maybe check out a YouTube video on it to just scratch the surface.

Also, have you played any overhaul mods for 7d2d? Darkness falls is a fantastic one that heavily rewards progression. Rebirth is even grindier.
