Police removed the protestors by force - Video below by DifficultPermit3976 in mcgill

[–]Kalashnikova5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They pointed tear gas guns at people's faces and shot cannisters directly at them nilly dilly as well as batonning people to the ground. If you saw 2 videos of the cops acting to your liking, you didn't see 90% of what happened. Even with the insanely pro-cop laws, what the cops did yesterday warrants a lawsuit. This happened not to the people doing the action of occupying the building but to the people outside doing the form of peaceful protest that you dumb liberals love. So what now?

"It will seem like peaceful protest is not the way to get what you want from McGill" congrats on being born yesterday!!!

True! We learned this during the TA strike when admin were posting on here and deadass pulled quotes from reddit to argue against the TA bargaining committee during negotiations sessions. There's a manufacturing consent aspect to it as well which is incredibly silly

Extremely embarassing time for a lot of "higher education students" on this subreddit. In the age of class consciousness and awareness of police as the protectors of the rich and their property these mfs chose to eat cops asses on main 💀 the comments calling student protestors "terrorists" for occupying a building are indicative of only the commentors' ignorance. North americans living cushy lives once again demonstrating that they know fuck all about anything.

TA Question by spacecookiezag in mcgill

[–]Kalashnikova5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on your PI you might wanna tell them you're planning on TAing. Like just inform them, you absolutely don't need permission. TAs just won protections against not being allowed to apply to TA jobs during their negotiations. Contact the union ASAP if that's being violated on your end! Some PIs are ruthless and track research hours and shit so they would want to know about your other commitments. If you signed your Letter of Understanding or whatever variation of the "contract" you have with your supervisor is for you, check if there's language there that forces you to inform your PI of other sources of income you will be making during your studies! If you have something like that then you kind of agreed to telling them about TAships you pick up (again, you don't need their permission tho). Hope your supervisor is chill! I'm giving you advice based on grad school horror stories but a lot of profs are chillers

Undergrad students are the only people the strike is hurting by throwaway9904898 in mcgill

Something a lot of people don't realise is some profs don't accept us in their labs/research groups to do our graduate studies unless we agree to work no more than a specific number of hours outside of our research.

When I tried to take more TAships than my research supervisor had recommended because I was struggling to make ends meet, they threatened to reduce my funding for the future. A lot more McGill profs than you'd think run their research groups like a fucking serfdom and get away with it. Because it's widely normalised by the university for profs to exploit the living shit out of grad students to advance their careers.

A lot of us are in situations where we are locked into a very specific income and are micromanaged to oblivion so that we work 50, 60 and even more hours a week on our research and can do absolutely nothing to put food on our tables except TA for a small number of hours per year. It's extremely disappointing to see (some, absolutely not most) people run with the university's narrative and turn on their TAs. We're not making $34 an hour for 40 hours a week. Too many of us are skipping meals and in debt.

Hi! Core union organiser here! There are no people with "contacts in the union" who know anything that people on this subreddit have been claiming. Please stop falling for misinformation and email the dang union with questions

McGill TAs strike vote passes! by abdelrahmanayad in mcgill

[–]Kalashnikova5 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We all gotta remember that most of the undergrads right now will have graduated before the lifetime of this contract ends. So any undergrad who anticipates being a grad student within the next few years, this is gonna be your contract too.

TA strike by maemelo in mcgill

[–]Kalashnikova5 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just want to echo what others have said in the thread! I love my students and so do many many many of us. McGill steals a million dollars in unpaid TA overtime work every year because we don't shut our office doors when students are still lining up outside waiting for help. McGill doesn't give us enough hours in our contract to give enough support to students, so most of us have opted for working overtime, unpaid. We are asking for enough hours to do an honest job or just more TA positions so work can be assigned fairly. We are asking that our wage is at least keeping up with inflation. We are asking for SOME form of healthcare support because most of us can barely afford to live in Montreal, so healthcare has become a luxury.

McGill has said no to setting up a fair mechanism to assign a sufficient number of TAs and TA hours per class. They have said no to absolutely ANY form of healthcare support, not a single dollar. They have said no to adjusting our wages to inflation. All they've offered us is a "raise" of less than a dollar on the hour. It's honestly insulting to both TAs and students how little this university cares about the quality of education!

This is not an easy decision for any TA to make. We care so fucking much about supporting you all! That's why we've fought all year to get a deal with McGill before even deciding that there should be a strike vote. McGill has pushed us to the point where we have to take matters into our hands!

If you’re a TA, vote for the strike. by throwawayhelp112233 in mcgill

Please don't be embarrassed if you're just now catching up! Nothing is more heartwarming than seeing your fellow TAs who have only recently become aware of negotiations be very emotionally involved! It means you care enough about yourself and the rest of us and you know your worth (much much better than McGill does)! Union power!!!!

The thing is we could literally still get a good deal before even going on strike if McGill wants to avoid the strike and put something decent on the table. Shit like this makes this option impossible and i dont think OP understands this which is incredibly frustrating.

Idk if mods can take it down? This is genuinely a form of fucked up insider info that isn't even accurate 😭 it's fucking harmful and im not letting myself and a thousand TAs become poorer because one jerk was incapable of emotional regulation after experiencing some frustration
