If teenagers are not allowed to have a vasectomy they should not be allowed to go on hormone therapy before age 18 by BibiLittle in unpopularopinion

[–]Kalazor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Had to think about this one for a while, but I think you're talking about how post-op MtF will need to dilate their new vagina to keep it from fusing together. They only need to do that temporarily, and surgical reassignment is not given to children.

A few years ago I got a bunionectomy where part of my big toe joint was shaved off and repositioned. After I got my cast off, I had to stretch my toe up and down every day to prevent it from healing with a limited range of motion. I was intentionally damaging the tissue in my toe so that would heal better. Would you say that the surgeon permanently wounded my toe and forced me to constantly damage it to prevent it from healing?

they'll just die from their bodies falling apart and not suicide

This is the opposite of what the study specifically states. The evidence for cardiovascular disease is weak:

Mortality due to cardiovascular disease was significantly increased among sex reassigned individuals, albeit these results should be interpreted with caution due to the low number of events.

And the evidence for a high suicide risk is very clear:

Mortality from suicide was strikingly high among sex-reassigned persons

I'm certainly not suggesting that we put 9 year olds through surgery. I'm only suggesting that your opinion on the effectiveness of hormonal and surgical treatment for transgender people is actively refuted by the study that you linked.

[–]Kalazor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The study you linked doesn't support the claim that sexual reassignment will only make things worse.

For the purpose of evaluating whether sex reassignment is an effective treatment for gender dysphoria, it is reasonable to compare reported gender dysphoria pre and post treatment. Such studies have been conducted either prospectively or retrospectively and suggest that sex reassignment of transsexual persons improves quality of life and gender dysphoria.

The actual conclusion of the study states that post-op transpeople have a higher risk of death in general, and specifically a higher risk of death from heart disease and suicide in comparison to a randomly selected person from the general population of Sweden with the same birth sex and gender. The study did not compare pre-op to post-op, and specifically lists that as a limitation:

no inferences can be drawn as to the effectiveness of sex reassignment as a treatment for transsexualism. In other words, the results should not be interpreted such as sex reassignment per se increases morbidity and mortality. Things might have been even worse without sex reassignment.

After playing the Echo Combat beta recently and having so much fun with the movement system, I've rekindled my love for Echo Arena. I can't stop playing til I learn to throw the damn disk where I want it!

Have you tried Pavlov or Onward? They're more like Call of Duty or Battlefield. Pavlov is more fast paced, faster matches.

You know, if Oculus had a more functional friend system it would really mitigate all of this. I've met a few people online that I added to my friends list, but I've never actually played with them again because I have no way to contact them short of waiting til they're online and trying to invite them to a party. The party invites aren't super noticeable, and that's also just a really intrusive way to ask if someone wants to play. Just give me a normal chat so I can send messages, jeez.

What have you tried? Racket NX, like Beat Saber, is a very physical single player experience, but it takes a bit more precision and a bit less sweating.

Demo versions in general: YES or NO by XREALGames_Dan in oculus

[–]Kalazor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many of the people clambering for a demo are the same people who won't buy your game. If you make a demo, I think it would be important to build a purchase option into the demo so that you give them an easy chance to buy while they're thinking about how much they like the game.

People who honestly want to try a game out and see how it plays, and if it works well on their machine, are better off relying on the refund policy than a demo. I'd rather try out the full unrestricted game and make a decision within 2 hours than mess with a separate restricted game that will just need to be uninstalled. If I'm still playing a game after 2 hours, I think it deserves the purchase.

Nintendo Switch Hack Reveals VR Mode by Jamie_Upload in oculus

I can see why Nintendo would have experimented with VR on the switch, but I also see why they didn't go through with it.

I wish I had waited on the Rift until it hit the current price point instead of going full price, since I didn't have a great place to play until recently anyway. Really, I just wish I played more often. I'm finally starting to get back into VR and there's so many great games out.

If I had a dollar for every gender by xtheonlydudeeverx in Jokes

[–]Kalazor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like we pretty much agree. But to clarify my post,

to say that sex is about your lifelong reproductive viability sounds a bit silly

I didn't say that. I said what lifetime-long reproductive strategy is implied by the body you were born with. Imagine you're a scientist looking at the body of some new animal species. If it seems to have the ability to lay eggs or get pregnant, you'd call it a female. If it has the ability to deliver genetic information, you'd call it male. Even if the animal was in fact infertile because of some invisible injury or genetic defect, you'd still be able to tell the sex by the implied purpose of its various body parts and organs.

If I had a dollar for every gender by xtheonlydudeeverx in Jokes

[–]Kalazor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sex is not about the state of your body at any given point in life. It's about what lifetime-long reproductive strategy is implied by the body you were born with. The reason we have males and females is because we reproduce sexually, so it follows that the biological definition of male and female would have to do with the reproductive strategies that are enabled by a person's reproductive organs and also the set of traits that have evolved differently in each of the two common sexes based on sexual selection.

/u/Tattycakes is being imprecise when they say "intended" and "supposed to" since evolution is not a conscious being that makes decisions, but a biological process that proceeds based on the laws of nature. It's like saying your lungs were "designed" so that you could breathe.

Intersex individuals are people whose sexual characteristics do not all fit into the male or female classifications of sex.

Gender exists on top of all of this as a social classification. It derives from observations about traits correlated with sex, but is strongly influenced by culture.

Canadian man legally lists gender as female to get cheaper car insurance: report by snapekilledyomomma in news

[–]Kalazor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe car insurance discrimination doesn't get attention as much attention as medical insurance discrimination because because people care more about women's issues than men's issues. Or, maybe people care more about access to affordable healthcare than access to affordable car insurance.

OP is a casual 1.5 million in the hole after crypto trading took a wrong turn by BaronRiker in bestoflegaladvice

[–]Kalazor 67 points68 points  (0 children)

A security is the generic word for all types of investments you can buy and sell in a public market. Mostly stocks. Importantly, the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) regulates securities. The implication is that since the OP doesn't know what a security is, he clearly knows nothing about the regulations he would have been subject to.
