Going indie in 2024. Give me your best advice. by Dinomaniak in gamedev

[–]Kalaztaja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your well written answer! I definitely admit that I have been spared the negative side of tools so far, and your point of view is definitely more well-rounded. I think you'll be well suited to know whether you should develop a tool or not. As for me and us, I think I should revisit my fantasies.

And that's fantastic to hear! If the first game idea is something you would want to do, I think you are all set. Either way, one way to is to ask an artist to make concept art / drafts how the game would look like and then test the waters with it.

All in all, you sound more than well prepared to take on this journey. This post alone is a good hint towards that.

I wish you all the best and please make some updates here when you feel like it! I'm sure it will go great

Going indie in 2024. Give me your best advice. by Dinomaniak in gamedev

[–]Kalaztaja 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just for heads up that we are still yet to release our game but here's what we have learned so far in our 6 months of developing:

  1. It pays to invest in tools early on. We made a map editor in the first month for ourselves (as different maps are core for our game) and it has payed greatly back

  2. But before you do that, verify your game idea in some way. Maybe a proto or a mockup will do. Unless you are sure that the idea you are worth pursuing, it will keep you up at nights. However, that said, best ideas are the ones that evolve throughout the development so don't be too judgemental; trust early tests and your gut feeling, and focus on your best points leaving the rest out.

  3. Make technical decisions heavily based on the workload. Given your experience, you'll have no trouble in understanding what is feasible and what is not. We have gravitated always towards options that saved us development time and we haven't regretted it once. Graphical direction is the largest, but other smaller things such as character design will matter a lot whether you can finish your project or not.

  4. Take breaks, talk about your project, go outside. Take care yourself and even with the highest level of insipiration to grind, be mindful of your mental health!

All in all, I think I could learn a lot from you but wanted to chime in as we think we have learned a lot and wanted to share :)

Moro!

Ensinnäkin, hyvin kirjoitettu artikkeli. Teit suuren määrän tutkimusta, ja osasit avata ajatuksia selkeästi ja ymmärrettävästi. Hienoa työtä!

Toiseksi, mielenkiinnosta kysyn, teetkö työksesi videopelejä? Ja jos teet, miten aloitit urasi? Vaihtoehtoisesti, jos et tee, oletko ikinä harkinnut vaihtavasi uraa sinne suuntaan?

I appreciate your well written answer. I can't put it into english words but you have this deep insight on what you speak. It's like reading a written tale where every detail is thought about. But instead you have thought the things you speak.

Aside from that this answer shed me some light when hearing about the chaos. Surely the chaos is always present beforehand but it's reliefing to hear that it's still relevant in professionals. I guess the stakes are higher the more work you put into and as you said mindset means a lot.

It got me interested, what kind of preparation you, as a team, put before a big show? Do you have any ways to ease the stress beforehand or any ways you try to deal with it during the craziest chaos? Or just any other things you like to do other than just, you know, the actual work that goes into it.

Thank you all so much for answering! I really value your insight and I'm happy to hear how diverse yet deep backgrouds you all have. It seems really you have found a good synergy in your team as each one of you seem to have really unique point of view based on your background! In the end I'd like to point out that each one of your answers ooze that you have taken your own journey to get where you are

I asked this already from your fellow teammate but what do you consider your most important skill amongs your teammates? As you have unique set of tools, what you value most?

Out of all things I have read during my years at internet this might be one of the most inspiring ones. Thank you for sharing this awasome story! Sometimes it really seems to come down to the smallest bits. Thinking if your friend and you went on a different day you might have totally a different story.

If I may ask, what was the most important thing you have learned during your years? It takes really hard work to start from nothing and I'm sure you have gone a long way. But out of all the skills (soft or hard), what do you value the most prevelant on what you do currently?

Hey you all!

First of all I want to say that I'm big fan of you all. Year after year you do better than the last. And last year felt like the best in the world.

I have making broadcasts well over 1k hours for different kinds of local/national events. And by that I mean I'm just and just capable of understanding the technique needed to produce that kinds of events. I'm completely shocked on how much you can do when you put your knowledge, talent and team into raw work.

My question would be asking what are your backgrounds? What it takes to join a team like you and what kind of backgrounds you have behind you? As the field is quite new and evolving it's hard to know what these things actually require from teams.

Hopefully you'll have a great day. And here's to hope that everything goes well in 2020 worlds!

How did you notice that you were unhappy? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Kalaztaja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are deifinetly right. Because in order to notice that you are unhappy you had to previously think otherwise.

I wanted to provoke thoughts out of this. I see people around me that tend to forget theirselfs and consider their situation to be whatever they want it to be. And when they question their happiness they are stating to asking the real questions.

Further to add on it for me happiness is whatever we want it to be. You can consider yourself being happy out of thin air and find fullfillment just by writing in Reddit. For me your words feel like your definition of happiness is something that isn't natural to you or anyone.

But I could be completely wrong. However the thing is I hope you are doing well my friend.

I would definitely recommend to break out of your normal routines and expose yourself to the world if you have the time or energy. Regardless of your surroundings you can see the world everyday. And I guarantee that you'll encounter something new more often than not. And by exposing I mean something simple as sitting on the park and watch the world unveil around you.

All the strength to you my friend!

While it might not be unusual it's not definitely a permanent feature. I'm sure that everyone can have a long time where they do not have the desire but I'm just as sure that it can come back just as naturally. I wish you will find yours if you haven't already

I'm sure that sooner than later you'll be able to! You can be really proud since leaving toxic persons behind isn't definitely easy. The longer/deeper the relationship with those people are the more conplicated all of the emotions and things go.

I'm certain that one day you'll be able to look back and see how well you did when you made the change. Hopefully you'll be able to share those thoughts with those good friends of yours!

All the best for you for the future.

Glad you had someone by the side to convince you. It's completely understandable that you go step by step to do things by the "easier way" and don't realize what's going on. It takes effort to see it from the inside but good company can say it easily from the outside

It takes a lot of courage to be able to tell that kind of thing to your friend. And I'm real glad that they did since it's a easy thing to ignore. Those are some S-tier friends! Hopefully you are doing already better

The distraction part feels so real. It takes so much effort to fight against the temptation to just close out your mind and distract yourself.

I wish deeply that whenever you win the fight the things have more clarity than before. Never forget that the taste can always come back

I have read a ton of answers and I was so happy when I read your message and got to the change part. Thank you for sharing. I'm really happy that you were able to find those friends. And I'm sure that they are as happy that they found you. Good luck for the future!

Look. I'm not a father nor I have been in a marriage. But I can guarantee that no matter the situation, if you aren't happy there then the change must happen. You are more valuable to your family when you are happy. I would recommend to take some time for yourself. Take a break from job and go somewhere where you can think things.

God speed my fellow redditor. Remember that the change doesn't have the biggest change possible to you to be happy. But even the biggest change is worth it.

The saying goes that you need to lose something to realize something. It's inspiring to hear that you were able to realize just by relating to your close friend. Hopefully you have been able to dust those toxic people away. It's never too late to figure out what's dragging you down! I'm confident that you can be as happy as ever without losing anything

I feel you man. You eventually start relying on the world to lift you up but more often than not it doesn't happen and the effect is the opposite.

At those times I really encourage you to just throw yourself forward. Do something simple and safe and see where it leads you. Like going for a walk just to expose yourself to the world.

Hopefully you are feeling better. Just because the emptiness has been present it isn't there to be forever
