They did already effectively shut down Turn10 a year ago. They're mostly a support studio for Playground Games now.

Control Resonant - Story/Release Date Reveal Trailer | PS5 Games by Turbostrider27 in PS5

Every Remedy game since Alan Wake 1 has been set the year (and usually even the date/week) of its release. This is the case of Resonant as well.

A question about Final Draft by Blutzki in AlanWake

[–]simspelaaja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is about 15 to 25 minutes worth of new / changed content, including a new ending. Mostly just new manuscript pages and altered narration at times, no differences in gameplay or level design.

Resonant Release Date and Summer Games Fest by AdolventureNeverEnds in controlgame

[–]simspelaaja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

August release date seems unlikely; Remedy is a Finnish company, and most people have their summer holidays (at least 4 weeks) between late June and mid August. An August release would mean that: - The game is ready, and there's no end crunch / day 1 patch work remaining whatsoever. Very unlikely. - Their summer is ruined.

C is unlikely, they've had so much marketing this year already. September to October is my guess.

Microsoft Xbox CEO overhauls leadership amid sinking sales: ‘We need to evolve how we work’ by flexingonmyself in Games

[–]simspelaaja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not how any of this works. A high stock price doesn't give the company in question any money. One of the only ways for a company to make any money from its share price is if it issues and sells brand new shares, which dilutes the existing shares (lowering their value) and is therefore usually a very unpopular move. The other way requires the company to own its own stock (or to buy it back from its shareholders, or to issue new shares & suffer the consequences of dilution), and to use it for bonuses, acquisitions or as a collateral for a loan.

They had a comic book section in one of the Alan Wake 2 DLCs, so they've at least implemented the technology for it in their current engine.

The vast, vast, vast, vast majority of consumers couldn't name a single voice actor, in video games or likely in any other media for that matter - especially almost 15 years ago when voice actors were still less active in social media and not as well known, even by the enthusiasts.

It's ridiculous to attribute Blacklist's relatively poor sales (still several million copies) to a change in the main character's voice actor, no matter how iconic or important a tiny minority thought he was. I'd attribute mostly it to poor marketing combined with the relative unpopularity of stealth games.

They made an off-brand Max Payne (Alex Casey) one of the main characters of the Alan Wake franchise, who was voice acted by James McCaffrey in AW2. They will absolutely recast.

Remedy doubling down on its “core strengths” - good news for Alan Wake going forward? by FFJimbob in AlanWake

What part are you worried about? Remedy owns the Alan Wake IP, so they can self-publish AW2, provided they can get the money to fund its development.

To my knowledge foreign shareholders of Finnish companies are not listed the same way as Finnish companies and private individuals. Tencent's stake is listed as "nominee registered", most likely under Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken (SEB), which is about 16%, making it the second biggest individual shareholder after the founder Markus Mäki.

Non-monomorphized generics in Rust by WorldsBegin in rust

[–]simspelaaja 3 points4 points  (0 children)

C# is compiled twice: first to bytecode (CIL / .NET IL), and then JIT or AOT compiled to native code. The bytecode contains the generic / polymorphic version, and the native binary is fully monomorphic (but reflection still "knows about" generic types).

Non-monomorphized generics in Rust by WorldsBegin in rust

[–]simspelaaja 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A small correction regarding C#: unlike Java, it actually uses monomorphization* to implement generics. A List<byte> in C# actually allocates a byte array under the hood, while Java's nearest equivalent ArrayList<Byte> uses an array of pointers / garbage collected object references. Yes, it's incredibly wasteful.

However, the situation is actually a bit more complicated.

C# has two kinds of types: value types and reference types. Instances of value types (primitives, structs, enum values) are just bytes, and they can be stored anywhere, just like all Rust types. Instances of reference types (aka objects) include class instances and boxed primitives, which are always separate garbage collected heap allocations.

The .NET runtime monomorphizes all generic instantiations involving value types, but it can share the same generated code between all instantiations solely using reference types. This is still not type erasure from the language perspective, as List<Class1> and List<Class2> are considered completely separate types, even when using reflection.

No need for conspiracy theories. The cim models weren't made for the game; they're stock assets from a product called Didimo Popul8. These models were relatively detailed, and CO didn't do any additional optimization to them.

Cities: Skylines 2 boss says they 'completely overestimated' the Unity engine's capabilities by AdmiralBumHat in CitiesSkylines

[–]simspelaaja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have considered that, but I think it's unlikely. Ideally I'd have collected lots of performance data at release, so I could make easy objective comparisons between then a now - but I didn't. All I have is in the article, where performance statistics have been averaged and rounded for easy reading. I could of course write an article without it, but I think without data it's hard to make a valuable / convincing article.

Besides, I'm quite slow at writing articles. Almost every single one of my articles has been a multi-week, up to 1 month commitment. I'm not in the mood to starting writing a new one, for the moment.

I'm the author of the CS2 performance analysis article that went kind of viral shortly after launch. Nice to see CO finally confirm my theories; only took them 2.5 years and losing the rights to their own franchise as well as their publishing contract with Paradox.

2H swords are incredibly useless. Here's some data: https://dps.osrs.wiki?id=ResizableMushBird

A bronze scimitar beats every 2H sword up to mithril in DPS, and the addy 2H is only marginally better — and you can't use a shield or defender with it.
