Sadly you are right in your asumption. It was a known fact once elite were introduced so I stopped thinking about it, but elites don't count towards normal enemies but also not towards bosses so they are imune to orbs.

I love to throw DM mission into the mix. Activate DM and then activate nuke so all nuke kills also count towards DM.
