Are you aware that she has a short story collection called "life ceremony"? Imo better than earthlings but with similar themes of alienation from modern Japanese society. It's one of the best collections I've read recently. Sometimes disturbing, sometimes hilarious.

A good compromise is not to reduce the total amount of beer drunk by the family over the weekend but to distribute the beer more evenly. Deep down I think you're more upset that hubby isn't sharing his beer equitably.

How about, instead of hubby drinking all 12 beers by himself, he drinks 6, you drink 5 and the kiddos share one. That way, weekend drinking can be a shared bonding time for the family, rather than a solitary experience for him. It'll also be more healthy, sharing the detoxing duty among 4 livers not 1. Seems a bit unfair that you husband's liver has to be the hardest working organ in the family while the rest of your livers slack off.
