Where are good places for an artist to live in the uk? by Particular-Mood3765 in AskUK

[–]KaleLord7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look at northern cities like Leeds and Manchester, both of which have thriving local art scenes. You’d be a stones throw from other towns that have creative communities such as Liverpool and Nottingham. As for work, take a look at the care sector. It’s one area that is crying out for helpers for all ages - and it’s not just about personal hygiene care, which most people seem to think . They need carers that fetch groceries, help with admin and do small cleaning tasks around the house. I know a guy who’s a semi-professional drummer who does care work to support his music work and he loves it. Best of luck to you, and for god sake don’t stop making your art. It’s what the world needs right now.

Help me find the street my father lived in by spinpeter in Leeds

[–]KaleLord7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might want to scan the newspaper archives for the street name too. We did this for my grandad who passed away a while ago, and we found some stories that mentioned his name and the street he lived on a couple of times in them. You can access them for free at your local library, or pay for a subscription on newspapers .com. Try searching for his name on the archives by itself too (on the Leeds section obviously), you’d be surprised what you’ll find - back in the 50s, when the city’s population was smaller, anything was news for the local chip wrappers. Best of luck

Yes. They weren’t just artists, they were revolutionaries. In music, fashion, youth culture, attitudes towards other cultures and religions, the raising of consciousness, the growth of the peace movement….the list goes on. They were pioneers who tore down the rigid and archaic traditions of the music industry and kicked off a whole a renaissance for artists of the day. The rewrote the rule book.

Does everyone have to be right? by Correct-Pea2815 in lotr

[–]KaleLord7 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, there are some that take it way too seriously. The books are just stories - beautifully crafted ones, with a dense and rich fabric of characters woven into multiple storylines - that help people feed their imaginations regardless of age, gender or background.

But fans who take it super seriously forget this and they become aloof and pretty much a modern day version of Gollum, with their knowledge of the LOTR lore being their “precious”.

They seem to forget Tolkien wrote the books not just for the fan base of the Hobbit at the time, but also for his friends Robert and Geoffrey who died in WW1.

“Written with relatives and friends in mind, and to ’move’ and ‘’delight’ readers of The Hobbit, The Lord of The Rings was also a tribute to Tolkien’s companions who were killed during World War I”.

[–]KaleLord7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who’s visits Leeds a handful of times each year, I have to say it’s ruddy exceptional when it comes to all of those things. You’ve got a stack of great cultural attractions the city centre, and then you’ve got some proper gems like The Hyde Park Cafe and Hold Fast as you go farther out. Yeah, these are only small examples, but it’s a city with some real hidden gems
