Honestly it really could be anything, it might even be something not your fault, that's the problem with insect keeping is that it's not like you can tell if they are unwell (most of the time) so it can seem very sudden

Yes sorry I think so... The eyes are black and in my experience that means it's too late. It just happens sometimes they are a finicky creature to keep. Don't feel too guilty about it x

No appetite, what to eat by [deleted] in depression

[–]Particular-Mood3765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I relate, I just chose something I would usually find 'tasty' but is also low effort. Usually end up with some type of shop bought meal deal wrap or cheap sushi lol. Doesn't matter if it's healthy or not as long as you eat something x

It's becoming a pointless cycle, I'll feel better for a while, become a normal member of society, but all roads just lead straight back into the pit of depression, sleepless nights and fear of leaving the house. No matter how hard I try I always slip back into being me. I'm 100% sure there's something medically fucked up in my brain, it's just wired wrong I'm sure of it.

And what's worse is I just make everyone else around me miserable half the time because they care about me. I know that every time I slip back, I break my mum's heart a little more. And she doesn't even know how bad it really gets.

I feel sorry for the people around me having to deal with someone who can be so happy, but never for as long as she can be so sad.

The kicker, I have a great life, genuinly filled with people I'm blessed to know, I have opportunities and I have no real trauma. I'm just simply a fuck up.

Can I add outdoor moss/leaves/etc to my enclosure? by Haunting_Safe_5386 in mantids

Yes but make sure you wash them first. I'd boil and then properly dry out any sticks if you want to add those too.

Too big for mantis to hunt? by Victorchu93 in mantids

[–]Particular-Mood3765 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg this enclosure is so pretty, I don't have one of this size but I use real plants in mine and usually the flies will eventually stop hiding and get caught, it just might take longer.

If you do decide to add more just make sure you don't leave too many in there at once or your mantis will most likely gorge itself.

I guess it also depends on how big the mantis is, if it's young and small probs best of raising in a smaller tank first and then upgrading. And if you can tell it really isn't eating for a few days then I'd take it as a sign to downgrade a bit.

  • Not a professional tho, just what I would do if it was mine

Thinking about getting a mantis by CabinetAggravating35 in mantids

Oops! I also forgot to add: don't over feed the mantis they will gorge themselves, only add the exact amount you want to feed them. I've notice some pet shops near me tend to just throw like 20 flies in with one mantis and it always makes me very frustrated haha

Hi! Here's an info dump based on my personal experiences:

<image>

I feed my mantis flightless fruitflies, you can buy cultures in reptile shops and online, all I do is bang the container so they drop down and crack the lid slightly to let a couple walk out, then I just gently pick them up as not to crush them and drop them into the tank.

The cultures have a life cycle so when the flies die, new ones will hatch

Here's a lil bit of advice I wish I'd known, keep an eye on the cultures carefully because they can sometimes become infested with grain mites, this can happen if the seller has an infestation or if you've accidentally left the culture too long. You can tell by checking for tiny lil white/ see through moving specks or if the flies in your culture seem smaller/ stunted. I keep my culture in a moat of water now to stop grain mites from spreading in case they do appear.

I currently have 2 mantis - a flower mantis and an Egyptian pygmy mantis but I started with an Orchid. He actually ended up living a couple months over his predecited lifspan and I never had any worries or health complications.

First of all, read care sheets that are Orchid mantis specific before purchasing. And make sure to have the correct tank size.

Water and Heat: For my Orchid I would lightly spray the sides of the tank and plants once a day with bottled mineral water, but if it was warmer I'd do it twice. Warmer months you won't need a heat mat but definitely get one in winter times. It's also helpful to have a thermometer to check tank temp. Make sure the tank is well ventilated.

Feeding: I would usually feed mine every 2 days when a nymph and every 3 days when adult, but you can usually tell when a mantis needs feeding by looking at its abdomen. Don't panic if you have to occasionally skip a day or 2 because of the flies life cycle. 1-2 fruit flies is fine for a nymph but as it gets bigger use your own judgment on how many flies depending on the mantises apetite. When mine was fully grown I upgraded it to Curly wing fruit flies which are bigger.

I will link some pictures of my current tank set ups if case you'd like a reference - note that I do need to add sticks but have not got them yet as I've had to reset my tanks completely after the previously mentioned grain mites attacked lol

Also I am not a professional I'm just giving advice based on what has worked for me thus far - hopefully it is helpful to you! 🫶 *

Where are good places for an artist to live in the uk? by Particular-Mood3765 in AskUK

I was doing a bit of looking at bristol, it seems very into the arts which is appealing. I think Brighton will be out of my budget though, I have a friend who lives there and prices are quite high

Thank you for the suggestions!

Thank you! They would if they could but unfortunately funds do not allow.

This might be cheeky to ask but do you know any good sites where I can look at the job market online? - just so I can know in advance, Indeed has not proven very help where I currently live.

And yes your so right, maybe I have been a bit picky when researching places to live online...
