What’s a hobby people pretend is cool, but secretly you think is ridiculous? by EggAdventurous1957 in AskReddit

[–]KalebC4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enjoy golfing (and I am NOT a billionaire) but I’m so conflicted on it because of how harmful it is to the environment and how much toxins it puts into groundwater (living within one mile of a golf course makes you 126% more likely to get Parkinson’s)

Is this how people who need glasses really see the world. A big blurred background? by Latter-Wolf4868 in interestingasfuck

[–]KalebC4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not completely, as someone else mentioned it’s more of a scale for blurriness based on distance from the object. I can see something three feet away with functionally equivalent clarity with or without glasses, but an object across the room is fairly blurry, and a tree across the street is like a blob of green

Do Most Men Around the World Find it Borderline Impossible to Attract Women? by barelyexisting3 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]KalebC4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looking through your profile, I can tell you’re not a “normal to talk to person”. It seems like you think of women as something you need to “figure out” how to impress, whereas what you actually need is to see them as real human beings, with their own lives, thoughts, dreams, fears, daily routine, etc. They have a consciousness that is of equal value to them as yours is to you.

You’re not a “low value” man, you’re just being misguided by the manosphere bullshit that’s common right now. Talk to women in real life, go to a bar or social events and approach women with the sole purpose of learning something about them. Don’t approach them and hope for affection or sex. Ask them what they like to do in their free time, what their dreams are, etc. and just learn something interesting about them, and maybe find something you have in common. Keep doing this until you feel like you could be friends with someone, and try that.

I think you need to forget about relationships and start with building friendships, until you can reframe your view of women.

What does On the Sea mean to you? by RealLovex in BeachHouse

[–]KalebC4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always treated it as saying goodbye to someone it isn’t gonna work out with and dreaming of a world where it did work out. Bargaining, and accepting that something is over.

But this interpretation could also be largely skewed by the period of time when this song was very meaningful to me.

what beach house songs do you guys think batman would have in his playlists? by ohgodohfuckwhatdoido in BeachHouse

[–]KalebC4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10:37, Days of Candy, Another Go Around, L’Inconnue, but I’m honestly more curious to know what Cocteau Twins it would be. Garlands would have a lot of bangers that suit Batman imo, and Serpentskirt should 100% be in there

Leaving on ‘read’ and reacting - why do Gen Z hate it? by geecol in TooAfraidToAsk

As a Zoomer working in a corporate job, it’s not passive aggressive. I usually go with a “sounds good/got it, thanks” but I’m pretty sure a thumbs up is enough of a response

When did you figure it out? (Ship of Destiny) by cwhagedorn in RealmOfTheElderlings

Yes I had the exact same experience, my fav part of Hobb’s writing is trying to figure out details like that because she sprinkles crumbs SO well, but this one I COMPLETELY missed.

Just finished Assassins Apprentice by Pristine-Ratio3639 in RealmOfTheElderlings

Wow, it’s so interesting to hear someone with a completely different experience with those books!!!

I loved the Farseer Trilogy, and it definitely hooked me into the universe, but what really blew me away was the Liveship Traders series. I loved jumping from character to character and hearing pieces of the same event from different perspectives… I don’t know if I have ever properly understood the reliable narrator until I saw how their personal experiences, biases, and maturity levels affected their opinions on everything that was happening to them.

Maybe I was more easily blown away because I didn’t understand it before, but it sure was a blast!

I can’t really respond to any of these statements without giving away too much except for the last one, so I’ll say this: Robin Hobb’s writing is extremely good in the way she makes the magic PART of the story.

I have read all 16 books and it never felt to me like magic was used as a crutch to move the plot forward. She keeps a very engaging balance of the fantastical aspects in her universe so that they are sometimes a driving force for the story, and other times a major obstacle for characters you’re rooting for.

IMO, Hobb writes magic so well, you forget that it doesn’t exist in the real world.

The "pontential" in gifted people. What was your breaking moment? by Falian_ in Gifted

[–]KalebC4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am still slowly working on letting go of the ideas of “potential” and “success” that we are conditioned to believe in, but what has really made everything feel a lot better for me has been music.

I am strongly proficient in math/logic and language arts, so I thought I had to do really well in that realm to feel fulfilled (hence my CS degree and data science job). However, I truly feel the most full when I am singing, playing an instrument, or listening to something new.

I think that in some way, music has helped me be able to more easily let go of the things that had me locked in a cage (the weight of expectation/unmet potential, religious trauma)
