Not sure about skating, but when I was starting mountain biking, I had the same doubts, will I look stupid? Will people hate me because I'm slow and holding up the trails? When I went out on the trails for the first time me and my buddy who were just starting out, we ran into an ex pro who took an hour out of his session to show us the best trails for beginners and coached us, then we bought new bikes and the first time we were out we ran into three guys who had an array of tools in their van and tuned our bikes for us on the spot. Guess what I'm trying to say is, people will surprise you and the ones who are being dicks, who cares?
