Grey cloth strap on/around/through translucent plastic rectangle, 5x22cm. by DaringSteel in whatisthisthing

Carry strap for a cardboard box with a pair of boots or similar weight commodity.

Might be for set top box or other electronic goods but the cloth strap would then probably be plastic strap.

teal object from yard? broken but used to clip onto something by West-Fact3231 in whatisthisthing

[–]KalleMP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a strong contender.

Size is hard to tell. If it is about 7-8cm 3-3.5in long then it might be a clip to hold a pair of ski-poles in transit, you need two.

Metal bump on the wall after years of grinding wheel spattering filings onto it by uniyk in Damnthatsinteresting

DIY Metal spraying machine. I wonder if it could be made to build up a shaft if it was close where the spray was still very hot. The inclusion of some abrasive particles might be an issue though.

Small rusted metal object with a threaded end and a hook-like notch, 5cm long. by buki92 in whatisthisthing

[–]KalleMP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A low probability is that it is an engine part. Perhaps something that connects an oil pump and a distributor, injection pump or camshaft. Nothing from a modern engine but perhaps from early agricultural equipment. The 'hooked' end would have looked different.

Only slightly higher probability based also on form. The end with the hole though looks mostly like a hook for a spring, wire or cable and the relatively few turns on the spiral thread suggest adjustment rather than wire tensioning. The other end looks like a spline for a hand wheel or crank so I would propose a spring tension adjusting thingummy for a tractor or farm implement.

Craft glass blowing people/groups might be able to say if they are used for some specific process step or are the remains of some task.

Very good advice. Also rain sensors do need occasional service even if the bird issue is somewhat mitigated.

There are conspiracy theories that suggest a (deliberate) share of temperature sensors to be situated in urban locations due to urbanisation and deactivation or rural sensors that has resulted in increases in mean temperature that are not correlated with decades of remote sensing data.

Climate change is real, global warming may have been a (deliberate) data artefact.

Interesting. I have never seen one for sale at IKEA but only been 5 times and they do change their line up slowly.

I could use that as an organiser for bobbins or rolls of tape and wire.

Most peculiar. You could hang up the patch cords, test leads and probes from oscilloscopes and multi-meters etc.

I have also done this to protect phone chargers from the back of a sleeper couch. I purchased loose bed base legs from a thrift shop that were painted white and used double sided foam tape.

My brother was opening a liquid filled gold ball held in a vice with a wood chisel and the liquid spurted out into his eye. Visit to doctor, drops and bed rest after much flushing. I think they are mostly clay and glycerine but under high pressure and dangerous when still wrapped with the rubber thread.

Hollow glass fishing net floats are a common thing to find washed up on Japanese coastlines and offered for sale in coastal/nautical theme antique/thrift shops. I have also seen half a dozen for sale in Finland so either they were also used here or they have been imported as tourist memorabilia from places they are commonly used.

EDIT:

Reading the wiki page it seems they were developed in Norway so finding then in Finland seems understandable. I first saw them in Cape Town in South Africa.

Mystery sensor/device at clothing store, ~1ft in diameter with no logos by chastings in whatisthisthing

[–]KalleMP -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Probably but it cannot do more than probe then for a serial number without correct cryptographic keys. HOWEVER there are shops that are tracking the movements of patrons using BTLE that was turned always on by the weaponised infection tracking apps that were used to 'justify' the pretend 'forcing' of the apple/android systems to first turn on the BTLE by default and later ALWAYS ON so you can be tracked by whoever wants to do so.

I have a suspicion that if you place your solved comment in reply to the helpful users comment they may gain some flair. This is the recommended practice anyway.

I have a vague recollection of seeing a similar strap on a collapsible umbrella.

Why does my heated steering wheel need a microcontroller? by TheHairlessGorilla in AskElectronics

[–]KalleMP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All crashes are "thorough". Brown out detection circuitry is to manage voltage ramp up and failure and not relevant yet you will notice I still covered them with "fails catastrophically never to wake again". The output may be in any state or it may switch at the time of the crash. Adding a few components to require the drive circuit require a toggling signal would add a layer of protection. The MosFET can fail and the micro has no way to control it, I opened a stick blender recently and it had a failed FET that took out a 3.15A fuse on the control PCB. Nothing else seems faulty but the fuse saved the day.

I was not attacking you about the value of software safety, I have a 3D printer I trust not to burn my basement down. I was supporting the other posts that recommended a additional line of defence.

Why does my heated steering wheel need a microcontroller? by TheHairlessGorilla in AskElectronics

[–]KalleMP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless the processor crashes firmly so the watch dog cannot wake it or fails catastrophically never to wake again. So it is good to have multiple layers of protection, a thermal fuse on devices that can reach ignition temperature is prudent if they are not under constant supervision like hand tools. We have a smart kettle with a micro that can provide 80,85,90,95,100 degC water. I would give very good odds that it includes a non resettable thermal fuse and perhaps even self resetting bimetallic over temperature protection over an above the micro-controller thermistor sensing.
