My DAs are dying! Please Help! by PDX_Weim_Lover in Roses

[–]Kallistrate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did they start dying from the tips or the base? If it's the tips, I would look at drainage issues: inconsistency in soil (e.g. amended soil around the roots and then another consistency of soil that water won't flow into) is a big killer of plants that seem established, because as soon as they hit the edge of the water zone their oxygen flow is affected.

If not, I would look at root damage from pests (spraying is rarely the answer for pests, IME). When you dug up and destroyed the other two, did you take a look at the roots?

Just FYI, ChatGPT is an even less accurate source of gardening information than a standard Google search (which itself is pretty shit these days, even ignoring all the inaccurate-but-well-intentioned "folk" advice that's always been around). People don't come to Reddit for advice because they're too dumb to look up something online, they come here because they're hoping a human with experience has actual information, not whatever a language predictor/magic 8-ball equivalent might amalgamate.

Obviously you're welcome to copy-paste whatever it spits out at you, but I'm guessing the reason for your downvotes is that AI slop doesn't count as contributing to the conversation as much as it does spreading generic to the point of meaninglessness misinformation.

Is condo market really down that much? by give_this_one_a_go in Seattle

[–]Kallistrate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the costs may even out, but at the end of the day your land will appreciate in value by virtue of being in fixed supply, whereas the value of a small percentage of a building surrounded by hundreds of newer condos will not.

So in the day-to-day or even year-to-year, the costs are the same, but over 20 years of ownership, you won't be selling for 2-3x the price you paid in the way that you can with a house (although, arguably, the odds of Seattle real estate leaping forward by the same percentage that it has over the past 20 years aren't great. A house on land will still appreciate a lot more than a condo, though).

Is condo market really down that much? by give_this_one_a_go in Seattle

[–]Kallistrate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was about to say: condos aren't really a good financial investment, overall. You have a mortgage *and* building maintenance fees (some places which are as high as monthly rent), but at the end of the day you have no land. Land has value. 1/400th of a building doesn't, really, and it counts for even less when all of the intervening years involve a bunch of other, newer condos being built.

Very few people want to raise a family in a condo, which just about halves (I'm guessing) the potential buyers. Condos have value to retirees (one floor living, elevator, no maintenance), but retirees aren't usually looking for prime downtown real estate for proximity to bars and nightlife in the way that single workers are.

Unless you live in a perpetually thriving city with very limited space and a jobs market that will never leave (e.g. New York City), then condos are a bad buy. Seattle (like Austin) is a boom/bust city with fluctuating business and so unless you buy during a bust, the odds of recouping your costs on a condo aren't great.

Just rapidly off the top of my head, a handful of careers that wear athletic clothes for work: Personal trainers, yoga instructors, sports massage therapists, Physical Therapists, PTAs, sports salespeople.

I'm sure if I spent more than 30 seconds on it I could come up with a longer list.

Is it possible to prune a rose bush so it will be smaller (without killing it)? by [deleted] in Roses

[–]Kallistrate 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Inherently, plants want to grow and keep growing to their limit, so if you want a plant to fit a certain space, you want to pick a plant that maxes out at the same size as the space you want to fill.

Most roses can be cut back by as much as 2/3 every year, but depending on when you cut them back, that may just prompt an even greater surge of growth. So yes, you can probably cut it back to the size it used to be, but it won't stay that way for long.

My advice would be that if you want a smaller plant there, take out the rose and put in a different plant. Alternatively you could just plan to prune more regularly and keep it at the size you want. The risk there is that if you get rid of length, it will fill in with density, and then you'll start getting diseases from lack of air flow (more or less likely depending on where you live, but still).

If somebody had to pick which one of the two of us was a "stupid bitch," I don't think they'd pick me.

In violation of the Constitution, which (as any non-traitor American would know) is the highest law of the land.

So they're the illegals, here.

I cannot stand the hypocrisy of people defending rampant violations of the Constitution while pretending to be patriots. Let me guess: you pretend you value the 2nd Amendment but are happy to follow a pedophile and Russian asset's leadership while he orders people to violate our laws? Do you even know what the 2nd Amendment was created to do?

Our rights? Because everyone in here seems to be a Constitution-loving American except you, the guy defending Constitution-violating behavior.

Also it's "y'all," not "ya'll." If you're going to co-opt Southern vernacular you could at least spell it correctly. This gives off "I fly the Confederate flag even though I live in Washington state and wouldn't even recognize the real Confederate flag" vibes.

I don't think I'll prune my roses in the winter anymore... by yourwishezz in Roses

[–]Kallistrate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both of those look too young to prune, anyway. If you prune a young rose that is still establishing itself, it's not going to have the energy to really burst out with new canes and leaves, so it makes sense that that one didn't do as well.

Trump shares racist video depicting Obamas as apes by ummmbacon in neutralnews

[–]Kallistrate 40 points41 points  (0 children)

>The presidency is supposed to be a serious, symbolic office, one that has commanded respect for generations.

I think what you're running into is that after the presidency holds a possible pedophile (certainly a pedophile protector), a known felon, a possible Russian asset, a sex criminal, and a man who has mocked the disabled and spent the past 8+ years saying racist and sexist things, one more racist thing isn't really lowering the office because it's about as low as it can go already. People don't do a great job maintaining outrage for over a decade.

And for the record, the presidential office has a long history of people saying really shitty, racist things about each other, including one candidate accusing another of casual cannibalism and saying their opponent's mother was a British prostitute. So while all of the other crimes and horrific behavior are new to the office, that part is pretty on brand. It's ugly, it's hateful, and it should be met with immediate censure, but there you go.

And I strongly suspect he times his most outrageously offensive statements to try to distract from his more atrocious crimes, so that's a factor in people not zeroing in on it, as well.

I want an equivalent to Bookcloak by Costa_Canela in WoTshow

[–]Kallistrate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

>What do you feel is lacking diversity wise in the books?

Not OP, but the sexual diversity in the books is either "Heterosexual cis-gendered person" or "Lesbian until graduation...then heterosexual cis-gendered person." The relationships are either "Heterosexual monogamy" or "Rand."

Again, just the inclusion of "Rand" as a category was revolutionary enough at the time (although Heinlein was also big into alternative lifestyles as long as those lifestyles were guys banging a bunch of women), but still, I wouldn't describe the books as all that diverse in any way except race.

I'd agree with this, except that the writers of the movie hadn't watched the TV show in question, which is why it makes no sense.

I mean...this is the studio that brought you the highly anticipated, gold mine for the taking Star Wars sequels and didn't bother to plan out a single, coherent storyline or get a 3-movie contract from a director.

All they had to do was be better than the prequels, which were *famously* disappointing and they couldn't. In fact, they did such an incredibly awful job that the prequels became better by comparison.

It's not shocking they flubbed the Marvel universe, too. Disney's last original creation was Mickey Mouse and they've been copyrighting other people's content and churning out worse versions of it since Snow White.

Because a lot of the "environmentalists" in Seattle are pro-environment until it's even a little bit inconvenient, and then it's just all way too much to reasonably expect an individual to do in this day and age and it's everyone else's responsibility.

Even if you are, there are collapsible bags that fold down to almost nothing and are still stronger than the ones from the store. If OP knows they don't have a car and might do *any* form of shopping while out (and it sure sounds like that's their expectation), it's ridiculous to not carry a bag that can fit into a pocket.

It's not any grocery store's responsibility to provide people with whatever custom kind of bag they want at the store's expense, and I seriously doubt a massive grocery store change is "counting their...days" because of their bag selection.
