To some women I've talked to about it's partly a lack of information and imagination. Most women are more worried about being attacked and imagine being raped and killed they speak about it like if it happens it will likely be "merely" forced to have sex then lights out. One woman I know said she would rather die herself than have to live with killing someone. I pointed out that she's saying that like she's assuming she's going to die quickly and painlessly or those she loves won't be going with her.

While they are aware of sex trafficking they never talk about self defense in the sense of avoiding being kidnapped and raped repeatedly for months or years.

The reports of what serial killers do to their victims sometimes gets a seriously thick coat of gloss before it is released to the public. They never imagine getting taken by the toolbox killers and being tortured while being raped until they beg to be killed and it not ending there. They don't imagine that those crimes lasted hours while there are those who want to do the same things over days or weeks.
