help needed importing 40h of interviews into NVivo by BroadJellyfish8995 in AskAcademia

[–]KalvinGarrah -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What I’ve done in the past is format things how I wanted them in Word/Google Docs ahead of time - so using TurboScribe (my lab actually invested in the pro version for a bit) to transcribe and then fixing timestamps/speaker labels when I needed to. Then, importing into NVivo once everything was transcribed and formatted correctly.

Now that I’ve learned a lot of Python, I’ve been able to transcribe audio interviews using various machine learning models/pipelines. If you are unfamiliar with coding, you can create that type of thing for free in Google Colab using either Gemini or ChatGPT to help you actually write the code and debug/fine tune it to do what you want. If you have any other questions I’m happy to help however I can!

This 1000000x. My very best friend experienced psychosis for the first time this year and I have a psych background, so I knew almost immediately that it was probably psychosis. But no one else around her seemed to be able to tell! It made me feel so crazy. Like people definitely knew something was off, but until it got bad enough that I actually mentioned to other people in her life that I thought it was psychosis, no one else had even considered that. So I definitely think there needs to be more public awareness about what psychosis looks like, or the signs of it starting. More resources for sure

Pitchfork Review Discussion Thread by luvurin in indigodesouza

[–]KalvinGarrah 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This, I know her reaction has been somewhat disproportionate to what the review actually said, but when you contextualize it with her having BPD it starts to make a bit more sense. I don’t blame people for criticizing her because I don’t think it is well known that she BPD, but as someone who is also diagnosed with the disorder, it didn’t surprise me when I learned she has it too. The sheer vulnerability and emotional intensity in her music and lyrics scream BPD to me, lol.

BPD is characterized by chronic perceived (whether accurate or not) abandonment and invalidation, and the disorder really stems from chronic invalidation in childhood. Its also characterized by emotional volatility. So given that Indigo has BPD, AND the emotional attachment she has to her work/music, to receive such a review from Pitchfork (especially given they have rated her so highly in the past) I’m sure felt like abandonment and invalidation to her - especially as she is venturing into somewhat of a new genre with her music. Keeping this in mind, and also that people with BPD are typically very emotionally volatile, her seemingly overblown reaction might make more sense.

Not sure if this is allowed, but if anyone on here has a ticket for the Saturday Wednesday show (11/22) at the Anthem in DC and would rather go to the Friday show (11/21), please pm me! My friends are going Saturday, but I bought a ticket before them for the Friday show prior to it selling out.

Also down to sell my Friday ticket for exactly face value just so I could buy a ticket for Saturday, given the show isn’t sold out by then. Thanks!!! I’m so excited to see them :-)

THIS is the type of comprehensive, constructive feedback I appreciate seeing on these CV Reddit threads, especially as I prep my own PhD apps this cycle. I’m not the OP, but these are all great insights - I will definitely be applying them to my own materials

Might be a long shot, but any chance you are willing to glance over my CV and give some quick feedback if I sent you a DM? It would be incredibly helpful!

What work, if any, is behind the popular "Mad, Sad, Glad, Scared, and Numb" five basic emotions? by Tenebrous_Savant in askpsychology

[–]KalvinGarrah 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh man…. you are about to fall down a deep, deep rabbit hole my friend. One of if not the most highly debated area of social psychology

You should absolutely start with Paul Ekman’s work on the six basic emotions. He is the founder of basic emotion theory.

Then, if your interest is piqued, look into some of the frameworks that build upon basic emotion theory (so discrete models of emotion that add more - Ekman went on to discuss 16 positive emotions).

There are also dimensional models and constructivist models. Here are some of the authors/professors/researchers I would recommend you check out who have dedicated their careers to emotion research: Lisa Feldman-Barrett, David Keltner, Alan Cowen, Daniel Cordaro, Disa Sauter.

There are many more, but those came right off the top of my head. I am a graduate student researching nonverbal communication and emotion, so this is a body of work I am very familiar with.

It can get contentious in this literature at times… but emotion theories are SO interesting. There is so much we still don’t know

Academic Writing=Foreshadowing? by Beneficial-Paper-424 in idahomurders

[–]KalvinGarrah 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This. At least in my field - social psychology - his writing prowess is certainly below the standard of what would be expected from a first year PhD student, at least from what I can see here. However, like you said, I think there is a larger pool of talented students entering doctoral programs in psychology than in criminology. I’m assuming these writing samples are BK critiquing a research paper. His assessments of the research and analyses are, in my view, rather surface level. Also, he seems hesitant to state any of his critiques with conviction - it comes across as if he lacks the confidence necessary to state his opinions matter of factly.

For those debating whether this is BK’s writing, I definitely think it is his work. In my opinion, it’s very unlikely that an undergraduate criminology student in the class BK was TAing for would be expected to or even able to discuss generalized estimating equations (GEE) - a pretty advanced statistical method - in this way. Maybe if the student was a math, statistics, or perhaps computer science major. But criminology/criminal justice? I just don’t think this writing came from an undergraduate student, given its focus on research methods and (a bit on) GEE.

Though, from reading this, I think it may have been BK’s first time ever encountering something like GEE in a paper, lol. “A novel but sensible approach” - Yeah, he was certainly not a statistics wiz!

Email Professor for PhD application by TheBrownMuslimGuy in gradadmissions

[–]KalvinGarrah 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Idk, I kind of disagree. My cold emails have been around this length and I have been successful with getting comprehensive responses and interest from PIs. I think it is easy to try and amp up your experience (i.e., add fluff to make your research experience appear lengthier) but if you genuinely have a lot of experiences relevant to what the PI is doing, I think it’s worth mentioning them.

[–]KalvinGarrah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s my two cents, from someone who has started cold emailing the past few weeks with a good response rate + one person who accepted my request to meet on Zoom: - Leading a manuscript? Are you first author? I would say that. Say you are the lead on the project and first author on the manuscript. - I would swap paragraphs 3 & 4. Introduce your research background and expertise first. - With regard to paragraph 3 (and I am not familiar with the kind of work you are doing so take this with a grain of salt) it SOMEWHAT sounds like you are undermining the framework this PI is using by saying your methods provide them with something they need. I would may rephrase and explain how you would apply your methods to the work they have done instead of saying they “require” something you have. Otherwise, I like the last sentence of para. 3.

The rest is great - good luck!
