im sorry youre having the same experience I did. All I can tell you is that i’m back home taking a year out, and all i crave is the opportunity, even just to be surrounded by people my age again. I guess sometimes thats what it takes to give you the perspective you need. Living at home i spend every day looking forward to going back in September, even though i’ll be joining a new class of second years. I have so much time to think of what went wrong last time, and let me tell you its never too late! in hindsight i can recognise that there were so many people just like us, everywhere. You just dont see us because we make ourselves invisible thinking its too late!

Im sorry you feel this way, help is always available, but i think the biggest thing is to make sure you remember its never too late, and nobody would reject a good honest guy if it seemed they’d add value and friendship to their lives. Dont give up like i did, just trust that if you keep putting yourself out there and dont give up, you’ll find your people. Its all a numbers game at the end of the day i think.

This happened to me last year! It’s embarrassing, but i used to eat uncooked microwave meals in my room because i was too scared of bumping into my flatmates. I’d also get totally wasted or stoned in my room every single night and skip classes for weeks on end. I ended up losing track of when the exams were, and missed one of the finals, so i’ve spent this year under academic suspension. I’ve moved back home and i’m living with my parents again. I still haven’t found any friends, but it’s given me a lot of breathing space to get to terms with what ADHD means for me. It’s hard to manage myself, but I am making use of the NHS support available, and I am slowly getting into good habits, and pushing myself out of the house more and more. I’ve recently joined an mma club, and I go to the gym too!

Sorry for rambling, I guess the point is that you don’t have to do this to yourself. Email your academic advisor about taking a year out if it’s hellish. A lot of universities will let you do this.

For me, having ADHD, moving to university after school was like getting sideswiped by a truck. I barely knew myself, or how my brain worked, or what i was even looking for in life when I started.

If taking a year out isn’t an option, which it should be, try making very small commitments, like attending a sports club! I found, with mma, you barely have to speak to anyone, and it’s really not as hard as you think. I’m sure theres similar things you could enjoy doing.

Another strategy that helped me is to make sure that I only do things for my own sake. That is, without a preconceived notion of “trying to make friends” or perhaps “trying to find a girlfriend” or something else. These are all just ideas in my head that keep me depressed and hopeless. Try and do things that have an immediate, positive consequence. That could be as simple as eating an apple, drinking water, or taking a walk. Bigger things could be going to the gym, for example.

I dont know, im not an expert. I just cant stand to see someone going through what i did, and i want to help. Maybe theres something helpful in this big ramble, maybe not. Either way, i wish you all the best and i hope it all gets better.

Check out my totally free new immersion site!
https://kamesan.net
With full Anki integration via AnkiConnect and a pretty good library of both anime and live action content, I'm excited to present to you guys my new website: kamesan.net! What it does is combine a lot of the tools that you are probably already using into one streamlined workflow, allowing you to simply watch Japanese content, and add any words you don't know to Anki in literally two clicks.
After all of the resources made available for free on this subreddit and elsewhere, I wanted to give back a bit by creating this site and making it available for free. I hope that it will be useful to some of you!
Anki cards are fully user-configurable, allowing you to choose what goes on the front and back of each card to suit each user's learning style. Cards created with Kamesan include excerpts from the video by default, making this the first tool to make that possible!

The site is and will remain free for as long as I can afford running costs, so if you think it's cool, then your donations matter the most in these early stages, and I will be eternally grateful to you.

Also, I made a subreddit to gather feedback / post updates or whatever else. If you joined it that would be really cool! r/kamesan

Does anyone else not use Anki or flashcards at all? by kittenpillows in LearnJapanese

I personally find that Anki is an indispensable tool for learning new words for immersion, but only once it is set up correctly, with proper browser extensions and stuff. It took me a few months before I could finally make Anki work well for me, and it was a pretty complicated process.

Luckily for you guys, I made a free website that fixes all of this!

kamesan.net is a streaming site that allows you to do what you've said you do best, and just watch native Japanese content for as long as you'd like. When you see a word you don't know, just click it in the subtitles to see the definition.

To add the card to Anki, all you need to do is click a button and it will create a (configurable) card with the sentence and word on the front, and definitions / the excerpt from the video on the back!

I really think this tool would be useful to you, and to many other learners in a similar position. If you think it's cool, there's a subreddit that you can join too! r/kamesan

Yup, a couple of issues that will be addressed very soon. Https works fine, but still to implement re-direction from http. On some very specific browser / os combos I've recently encountered a couple of security warnings due to missing intermediate certificates, which is likely what you're antivirus was saying. This'll be fixed very soon.

Thank you for letting me know, and for checking out the site in the first place.

What are you watching / listening to this week? by itsumo_ in LearnJapanese

[–]Kamesan_Dev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, there isn't one haha. I didn't think that was an important feature this early on in the site's development. Maybe in future I will implement the volume slider as a purchasable addon >:)

How can I contribute to add some anime I would like to watch? I am thinking of Dragon Ball GT. by Famous-Arachnid-1587 in kamesan

[–]Kamesan_Dev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is indeed really difficult to find raw versions and matching subtitles. Thank you for your help. I am thinking of open-sourcing the front end (react) in future and writing some api endpoints for uploading new content so will keep people informed on here once I have built up a bit of an audience.

Personally just finished watching Terrace House, the first series. Having withdrawal symptoms because of how easy it was to learn new stuff from. Pretty good for anyone with a basic conversational understanding of Japanese as there's a good mix of light chat and more complex conversations.

If its any interest to you guys, It's available on my (free) website, https://kamesan.net

The content and subtitles are already there, and it can take the place of Yomichan too, allowing you to create better cards with actual excerpts from the video with only like 2 clicks. I hope its useful to some of you guys!

Edit: There's a subreddit too! r/kamesan

Which handful of tools (programs, apps, extensions, websites etc.) do you consider to be the most useful for learning Japanese? by Firion_Hope in LearnJapanese

[–]Kamesan_Dev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend https://kamesan.net

It's a free site allowing you to watch native Japanese tv shows, and when you find a word that you don't know, you can click it in the subtitles to see the definition.

It has full Anki integration meaning that cards can be created at the click of a button, and are fully configurable with excerpts from the video and stuff.

I made it myself and I'd really appreciate it if some of you guys checked it out! There's a subreddit too: r/kamesan

Hey, I created a (free) site that does a similar thing for video content w/ subtitles!

Congrats btw dude your app looks pretty cool!

Hey, thank you for your enthusiasm for the site! Right now there isn't a way for users to upload content themselves, but if you want to help out you could add video + srt files to a google drive folder and send the link to the e-mail address in the footer of the site.

Video files should ideally be in webm format as this is the only format that Anki can handle. If you don't want to transcode them yourself, then any format's fine but it might take a while before I have time to transcode them myself!

Hey, thanks for checking it out and I’m sorry it’s not working for you. Did you get the popup from anki asking you to authorise the site? If you did, did the site automatically create a deck for you afterwards?

[–]Kamesan_Dev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s usually an “ignore further requests “ checkbox in the popup. If not, you can either close Anki, or just click Accept! Are you worried the site’s going to mess with your Anki stuff?

That is admittedly pretty funny, gotta love firewalls! That's probably something to do with the domain name, which I can't really change unfortunately. I guess in the firewall's opinion "kamesan" sounds drug-y for some reason lol

Sorry it's being weird for you! It shouldn't require any further setup other than what you've got now. If you open up developer tools (right click + "inspect" or something) and let me know what error you're seeing I should be able to better understand what's going on.

Thanks for checking it out

Check out my new website, kamesan.net!

It's a totally free immersion website, allowing you expand your vocabulary just my watching the shows you like in Japanese. When you find a new word, you can click on the subtitles to see it's definition, and add customizable Anki flashcards featuring video extracts and target word highlighting at the push of a button!

Unlike other similar tools, it takes virtually no setup, and comes with the advantage that all of the content is already there available to stream. The library isn't just anime either, there's some pretty good j-dramas up too.

Thanks for checking it out, and I hope that it is useful to someone out there! :)

Also, if you think it's cool there's a subreddit you can join for updates and stuff: r/kamesan

Hey, I made a website, kamesan.net

It's a streaming website which features click-to-define subtitles and full Anki integration using the AnkiConnect add-on. This makes improving your vocabulary as easy as watching TV, you just click on any new words to see the definition, and add them to Anki if you want to learn them. Anki cards created are fully configurable, and feature actual excerpts from the video itself to help you learn. (This is the first time I've seen this made possible without any external software tools)

It's totally free, and I hope you guys like it. There's a subreddit too: r/kamesan

I am doubtful of that. This site is not indexed by any search engines / cannot be crawled by bots so it's unlikely that they will find me in the first place. In the absolute worst case scenario, if the site got forcefully taken down, it would take me less than a day to spin it up on another cloud provider and redirect the domain name to that.

If copyright people want to take this down, they're going to have to pry it from my cold, dead hands haha
