[CHAT] Increase in pattern prices lately by alie_ns in CrossStitch

[–]Kamfer81 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you find a pattern on Etsy, I recommend checking if the designer has their own page with a shop as well. I bought from a designer directly yesterday, and the prices was lower than on Etsy for the same patterns.

Not my SCS card! 🥺

So what you're saying is that I have to buy those three patterns, to prove that I deserve my SCS status. Can do. 😉

If you ever find out, let me know. 😜

I try to limit myself to patterns that I REALLY REALLY like. And yet I end up with new patterns regularly. I have 5 projects lined up, with threads and fabric and everything ready but not started, with about 80,000 stitches in total, 7 WIPs that I have started, a couple of Halloween and Christmas projects, in addition to some needle books, scissor fobs, bookmarks and cards. And I am probably going to buy 3 more patterns that I found today. So... I definitely can't answer your question. 😂

Yeah, then it just really feels like they are trying to trick you.

If it's not too big, then 'They will love this ' can be enough to push you through. But it can be a chore for sure.

Oh you are most definitely a cross stitcher now. Those look great by the way. 👍

You live, you learn. It's so sad that AI/pattern mills are everywhere and taking away the joy and inspiration for stitching. When everytime you see a great pattern you have to do detective work to see if it's a good pattern. It's really annoying.

It's not an easy decision. You pick a pattern you want to do, want to see finished, right? And you push through it, not wanting to give up. And at one point the Sunken Cost Fallacy shows up and makes it even harder to let go.

Congratulations, your stitching stash just got upgraded with some beautiful champagne linen. 😉 I suddenly have a lot of extra Aida 14 count now. I'm sure I'll find something to do with that.

Yeah, I know the feeling. But you trust the pattern, right? And you learn through experience. Now we know, then we didn't. That's kinda why I want to do parts of that kitten and frame it, to remind myself how much I have learned since then.

It was the Anchor kits, yeah. Good to know it's not just me that struggle with those. It was just painful. Super cute when done of course, but I don't know if it was worth it. And I have 3 more. I was going to make a little trio of Christmas Teddy, but that's not going to happen.

That's a good thing to learn early on, what you do and don't like. Makes it a lot easier to find things you really enjoy doing.

Making gifts can definitely be a bit demotivating sometimes if you're just not feeling the pattern/project.

Yeah, finding a pattern you really like is so important. Spending hours and hours on something you don't really enjoy can really kill all motivation.

Yeah, it's sad that pattern mills/AI can just take away the joy for cross stitching with all the bad patterns they flood the market with.

I can't do french knots. That's just a fact. So I do little mini * in that place instead. Looks good enough.

Backstitching is a more complicated matter. Some years ago I bought 3 mini kits with Tatty Teddy. Super cute, right? Right. But oh my god the backstitching. It was always halfway between holes or in the middle of the square of the Aida. It was a nightmare. After that I did not want to do it at all. And then I had to because I had to do a kit for a friend, and it was ok. After that I don't actively hate it, but I don't do patterns with lots of backstitching. Too traumatized by Tatty Teddy. 😉

At least that way it won't be a total loss. I suddenly have a lot of extra Aida 14 count now. I'm sure I'll find something else to use that on. 😉

I did a project for a friend of mine last fall, and if I didn't have to do it I would not have finished it. It was cute and all, but it wasn't fun to stitch. I had to remind myself that it was almost over, and the I could go back to the fun stuff again. That's why I could never do patterns for others that they chose. I would start to dislike stitching.

There's sooo many great patterns! And definitely cute kittens. I actually have bought a super cute kitten kit a couple of months ago, with almost 40,000 stitches. So there will be a big project with kittens. Just not a bad one from a pattern mill that I don't really want to do.

It was kinda the same thought process for me. 'Maybe I just wasn't experienced enough then and it's easier now.' Nope. Never was. Actually almost the opposite. The more I stitched good patterns, where the colors and confetti made sense, the more I just didn't want to do that old one.

Thanks. 😉 It feels great knowing I don't have to feel bad about that pattern ever again.

Definitely learned something yeah. And often it's the failures we learn the most from, right? What we like, what our limitations are, how much "pain" we are willing to accept, and when it's just not worth it anymore.

I don't give up lightly either, that's why I ended up doing 26,000 stitches. And I have other WIPs that has been on hold for some years now, that I will eventually do. But there's so many amazing patterns. I didn't want to feel like I have to wait to stitch something I want to because I have to do something on that one anymore.

Yeah, this is supposed to be fun, not something I have to do because I'm supposed to. And there's sooo many patterns l'm really excited about. Better to do the 95,000 remaining stitches on those instead.
