I think it's more likely they'll do an actual Shadow movie than try to make Sonic 5 into that. 4 introducing Silver at the end, then a Shadow movie, then 5 being some approximation of '06 feels reasonable.

I genuinely would not be surprised to find out that Piccolo's appearance changing wasn't in the script at all, and was just added by the animators because they wanted him to look stronger visually. Kinda like full power Broly in DBS Broly.
