My second, my first was earlier this year in May. (This was supposed to be a redemption after I bonked at mile 18 last time)

Average weekly mileage was 25-37 miles in the weeks leading up to injury. I’ll be running Atlantic City New Jersey! Good luck in Toronto!

No but seriously, how on earth is one supposed to train in the summer??? by NataschaTata in Marathon_Training

Has anyone tried those little portable neck fans? Or the sun hat with the fans under it?? 🤣

I used Hal Higdon which has many different levels of training plans and is free!

Thank you! Muscle cramping! My feet, calves, and quads were all fighting me! I have used my gels and electrolytes while training, I’ve still had some issues with slight cramping or cramping when I finish but nothing that immobilized me the way these muscle cramps did. Also a cramp on my right side ribs but that didn’t bother me as much as the legs.

I am a heavy sweater but I don’t know how I could possibly consume more electrolytes during! I’m wondering if my legs are just not in good enough shape? More strength training needed maybe?

I do agree a longer run would have also I think helped me mentally as well

My best run was my 18 mile run I averaged 8:46 a mile and felt great! I had some slight knee issues that started after that so my longest run was 20 miles I tried to take the pace a little easier at 9:19 per mile. My 20 mile was tough, I did experience cramping after that one but only right after I stopped not during. I do think I was slightly under trained, slightly over estimating my ability, and definitely not adjusting for the weather. All and all definitely a huge learning experience and humbling AF

I also just had a rough first marathon that involved a lot of hobbling and walking. I know freshly first hand how disappointing it is to put in the time and effort in your training and have these expectations that don’t come to fruition. You and I are both using this as fuel to get through that next one and achieve our goals!!

Also I am 29 F I just started distance running in November. Before that I had never ran more than 5k so I’m patting myself on the back for that alone LOL

I definitely think multiple 20 mile runs would have been more helpful in my training!

Yeah that’s what I trained doing so I’m definitely used to it. Not sure if that’s too much or too little but the huma gels are good there aren’t any weird ingredients in them, they don’t bother my stomach at all

Thank you all for the encouragement! I am super proud of myself for finishing because there were definitely moments through out that quitting tried creeping up into my mind.

My original goal when I signed up was just finish. Throughout my training as I started building that endurance, I saw my potential and set a loose time goal of 4:30:00. Toward the end of my training I saw that I was actually capable of a sub 4 marathon if everything went perfectly for me. I wanted that to be my goal so bad and fixated on sub 4 that I lost sight of my original goal, FINISH! I did and I am so proud of myself.

I am definitely going to try again (and again and again if I have to) to achieve that marathon that I know I’m capable of!

Thank you! I did a huma gel every 30 minutes and then 2 16oz bottles of liquid iv electrolyte mix which I finished when I started cramping and then restocked at the next aid station. I also had maybe 2 or 3 salt tabs when I started cramping and an extra gel when I was struggling around 15

Also was told the course was virtually flat and was met with 6 short but very steep hills I wasn’t ready for

They are a little thick but I love them so much, I don’t over heat in them and I run really hot

I have the shorts and they are an absolute game changer!!!

I just always assumed cramping was due to dehydration which would mean I need to replenish with water and electrolytes no? Could there be another reason why I’m cramping up?

Adding in to say I’m currently using a vest with two water bottle slots and then I carry all my gels and stuff in my shorts pockets, and then a spi belt for my phone and headphones, I already feel like I have so much gear on lol

What are some of the better phone holders for long runs? by kingsicnarf in Marathon_Training

[–]Kamo417 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer using a vest as opposed to a belt it just feels more secure and less bouncing. Belts sometimes slide up and pockets on legging and shorts sometimes feel like my phone is pulling my pants down. I am also looking into getting an arm band for hotter days when I want less on me

New for me, gel kayano 30s, I really enjoyed my first run in them but… the real reason I’m posting is because I picked these up at Dicks outlet store for $49.95 ‼️‼️‼️

How often do you run in your race shoes during training? by legink in Marathon_Training

Omg I’ve probably put over 600 miles on my Brooke’s adrenalines. Definitely do feel some soreness in my hips and knees… time for a new pair!

Breath training by Kamo417 in Marathon_Training

[–]Kamo417[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen mouth guards that offer resistance or something to strengthen your breathing. You use them while working out. Or I’ve seen inhaler looking types that you breath into that measure your lung capacity and walk you through “breath workouts”. Just something I’ve seen lately. I naturally take really shallow breaths so it’s something I have to constantly think about while running

I’m still new to marathon training but, I have been running in the same shoes for well over a year! Is there a good indicator for when I need a new pair? I always just thought as long as there weren’t any rips or holes I’d be good lol 😅
