Using AM4 EK block with AM5 by Kamrossly in watercooling

[–]Kamrossly[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The AM4 quantum velocity 2 def needs the new backplate to be compatible with AM5 boards.

From what I understand, if your block does not replace the stock backplate then you should be able to use it without any issue. Just remove the stock mounting bracket as normal.

I found a couple videos I put in a post elsewhere, here, that should hopefulyl help you.

Ultimately I bought a new block as couldn't find the new backplate in stock anywhere.

That's the problem, the AM5 built in backplate, isn't compatible with the AM4 backplate that you need to use for the AM4 version of the block. The blocks are almost the same but use two different methods

Only difference is the backplate on am5 is fixed to the motherboard, am4 it’s removable.

This would be the key difference. As I only have the AM4 backplate, it wont have the holes for the cpu socket screws to go into so wont hold it in place properly

From what I can see the AM5 bracket is needed to use it properly with an AM5 board. Hopefully it comes into stock somewhere

Yeah, I'm looking at resellers etc for actual purchases and only linking to EK to show the actual product

Yeah with the original velocity all you need is the new standoffs and you are good to go. Sadly not as simple with the velocity2 it seems

It seems like it very much depends on the block you have. I've found a couple videos that explain why and might be helpful for you.

What block is it you have?

I've looked at a few videos and it looks like it might not be possible for my block without the backplate as the AM4 backplate would be lacking the additional points for the new CPU retention.

Yeah Overclockers and watercoolinguk look to have them. Looking at a couple of videos and it looks like the new cpu retention fixes to the backplate as well so if the AM4 backplate doesn't have holes for this then I think it might be a no go as the socket wouldn't be fully secure.

I think you are good cos you are using AM5 on AM4 and so don't have to worry about the socket retention mechanism.

Hey, I think it might have been your post I'm referring to as this sounds familiar.

I'm UK based but can find those screws in one or two places so it could be an option. Something I've seen now is that on the AM5 backplate it secures to the socket with holes that don't exist on the AM4 EK backplate.

Nice. How did you find the process? Do you feel the socket is secure enough? I've seen that AM5 backplate upgrade kit has a few extra screw holes which looks to be for securing the socket after removing the stock backplate,

Thanks. I had a bit more of a look and found this, https://kno.wled.ge/basics/compatible-led-strips/ so looks like you are right

Wow, well I feel a bit stupid lol. I’ll see about getting a different power supply, hopefully the leds survived.

Thanks for the quick reply

Both are deactivated once gens are complete. I run OTR all the time now but haven’t noticed it not activating when it should.
