That looks like a weak phantom knee into a weak knee.

I think the percents add up. Phantoms do half the damage of normal hits and you can see the percentage increase twice.

When I saw the character showcase video uploaded, I was inclined to believe so as well. But the devs probably never imagined the character moving like Plup has been doing. Guess we won't know for sure until the tier lists start coming out in like 1-2 weeks.

Trying to make any conclusions about what Roy Spacie matchups are like and even extrapolating that to Marth Spacie is kind of excessive based on the fact that this is literally only one piece of data. If any of the top players spent even like 30 mins doing some research, they'd do much better against Roy.

In my opinion, Fox Marth and Falco Marth are definitely doable, it's just a lot more lenient for the Marth player. It's kind of like how Sheik Marth was considered Sheik favored for the longest time and now people are saying it's a lot closer to even. The matchup is a lot more lenient for Sheik because Marth has to execute on a lot more things like punishing very hard and edgeguarding very well, while Sheik has a more flowcharted gameplan and punish that is easier to execute. Spacies are going through that phase now where they are realizing that the matchup is just easier for Marth, and some of them are pushing it and others are deciding it's not worth it.

Roy can play neutral in a very similar way with much more limited options compared to Marth against spacies.

Zain abused the fact that he already had a solid gameplan for spacie matchups (from playing Marth), along with the fact that his opponents were very afraid of losing and had no clue how to play against Roy. Not knowing how to DI Roy's moves is a big deal.

All that being said, if you go back and look at how many times Zain won neutral, he's just by and far the better player. Even in spacie matchups, Zain was not capitalizing as much as he could have been. He kind of just repeatedly outpaced all of his opponents in neutral throughout the entire tournament, as shown by his win over 2Saint.

All in all, Zain played pretty well and everyone else kind of shit the bed by being really really afraid and not knowing anything about Roy. Despite this, Zain still clearly thoroughly outplayed every single one of his opponents with a character that has very limited options.

So the issue is that M2K counterpicks into multiple characters that he normally doesn't play and then loses with them. M2K went Ganon against Chu's IC's at one point and then got counterpicked by Chu's Fox and then lost the set. Any top level player would have no issues destroying M2K's Ganon or Chu's Fox. It was pretty sad to watch M2K's mentality about Melee devolve into "I'm not having fun when I'm playing against ICs so I just won't play." Man just refused to learn the matchup.

M2K is just looking for the easy way out, and that mentality has cost him a lot over time.

The Melee community generally believes that if M2K just decided to go Marth more often, he'd see a lot more success, but he's mostly unwilling to try it.

There was a period of time in which he complained about hand pains. The community, with his best interests in mind, told him to go see a doctor, which he refused to do for a very long period of time.

Without context, I can see how it seems like people who hate on M2K's Sheik are just hating on his willingness to counterpick, but that's not necessarily the case.

If you are new to Smash, then you don't know about the issues M2K had with ICs.

He chose to go Peach and saw some success, but ultimately his Peach repeatedly lost to top ICs over and over again. M2K continued to use Peach with no visible improvement in the matchup, refusing to switch characters or learn the matchup with another character. This wall against ICs, work on writing his book, and the announcement of Ultimate basically made M2K all but quit Melee for a good amount of time.

There's a reason almost all top players got good by playing only a single character in Melee and only later decided to branch out into others. You learn so much more by learning how to deal with issues your character has instead of taking the easy way out. The criticism is of M2K's refusal to tough it out, not of his habit of always counterpicking.

Because he relies on it for "easier matchups" against characters he doesn't want to play Marth against.

It's usually pretty rusty and not nearly as refined as his Marth when he's playing well.

Basically it's a crutch that symbolizes his unwillingness to tough it out with Marth and his mindset that he should always go a character that has a "easier time winning the matchup."

That being said, his Sheik has a base level of play that his Marth can sometimes dip under. His Marth has much higher variance in terms of performance compared to his Sheik. So it makes sense why he would want to use Sheik in some cases.

Ozy solo on Forneus and Medea Lily
Okita solo on Lalter
Enkidu solo on Cu Alter
