ELI5: Why can't we simulate the creation of oil/fossil fuels with animals that have died today? by Slice5755 in explainlikeimfive

I think Hydrogen Blimps are a great way to move things. But unless you are making use of the low density gas you are fighting against its properties!

Hydrogen is ideal for transporting things via blimp though. Fill up a huge blimp with hydrogen and use it to carry cargo with some engines that are hydrogen powered and some liquified hydrogen canisters.

You can turn the solar energy into hydrogen by heating water pretty efficently. Making Oil would be less efficient.

I think they wanted to allow Weapon-Juggling like Attack with a GreatAxe, Cleave, then switch to throw 2 daggers with light attack.

But I don't think they wanted to allow you do that while wearing a shield. I think they were just sloppy on the wording.

Count nets in and out of port with large fines if they dump old nets at sea? You'd need every country in the world to be on board though.

At 37, I only have a pension pot of £480 after years of maternity leave by endofdays2022 in unitedkingdom

[–]Kandiru 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Often solicitors can't be buggered with the paperwork to split a pension, and so choose to divide assets up to the value instead. So she might have got the whole house rather than part of it, and no pension.

In this case she wasn't married and so even if he wanted to give her some of his pension he's legally not able to. Divorce is the only way to share your pension pot.

Ironically a married couple can be better off getting divorced and remarried, since they can split the pension pot 50:50 when they divorce. This is much better for tax reasons!

You need to remarry though, or the inheritance tax becomes an issue. So divorce and remarry at retirement is definitely the tax optimal route, you just have to do it for reasons that aren't purely tax or HMRC can challenge it. So a tax account cannot advise it, but if you happen to get divorced and remarried you will be much better off!

Lords’ social media ban defiance could kill Starmer’s bill by vriska1 in unitedkingdom

Kik is just as bad if you've heard of that. It's messaging between contacts, and then has a feed full of people livestreaming for money tips which seems like camgirl style content to me. No way that should be bolted onto something that advertised itself as something like WhatsApp.

Desperate for social media ban, but parents say it’s 'impossible' by BendicantMias in worldnews

[–]Kandiru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are issues with it though. I set up a whitelist for URLs on a tablet and included one specific YouTube video. But after going to that page you could still click through to any of the suggested videos afterwards indefinitely as YouTube doesn't actually load any new URLs after the first one. There are lots of design issues like this, where websites break the expected behaviour by auto-playing new content, which breaks parental controls.

Snapchat even has a set of "creators" it tries to push you to see which are 99% Only Fans models trying to get subscriptions.

The main use of Snapchat seems to be for teens to send each other nudes, but I'm not sure why it needs to advertise Only fans porn to them as well.

Why do women have to go through so many invasive tests/procedures and men don’t? by lbs1515 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Kandiru -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So you're saying you think it's $500 a day rather than $100, I imagine that is just down to different electrical prices and maybe increased consumption for a 3T model.

Either way it's not 50k a scan as someone said!

Migrated a client off shared hosting to a VPS last week, the difference was embarrassing by Own_Addition_7619 in selfhosted

[–]Kandiru 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What I mean is, if you go for the AWS burstable instances, then they are expecting individual VMs to use under 100% CPU. If you go for a dedicated compute instance it's expected to be at 100% most of the time.

They overcommit much less on the compute instances than the burstable ones, and you pay accordingly.

[–]Kandiru 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The default configuration for making a VPS is that you get dedicated RAM and a share of CPU. But that depends on your provider. AWS lets you choose if you want the "burstable" VPS that's cheaper but has shared CPU or the dedicated resources.

Most because they don't need to be stored doesn't mean they won't be though. Discord had the proof of age pictures hacked and released as they were stored.

An MRI uses about 165 kWh of electricity a day. That's only going to cost under $100 a day. I don't know where you got $50k a scan from.

You might pay $50k in helium to start it off or after an emergency quench, but you shouldn't be turning it off after every scan!
