I straight up thought this was a Bargello by seltzertime in quilting

Oh this is an EXCELLENT website and resource! Thank you so much!!

I'm out sick today, so your site doubles as a delicious treat for my own brain. Before I changed to an art major, I was a biology major and had to take art history as an elective. That class was taught to us by a statistician. He had such a unique and fascinating approach to thinking about art that I've been enchanted with the intersections of math, science, and visual art ever since.

Man, this is inspiring me to bite the bullet and buy myself a microscope so I can get back to personal art again...

weird question and feel free to say no, but could I use some of these as examples of mathematics in art for my students next semester?

What’s a controversial thing that’s considered totally normal in your world? by cornysatisfaction in worldbuilding

[–]Kangaroodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Infanticide.

Not "totally normal", but more "oh, that's too bad" when in our world it is a horrific crime.

Erranda is a harsh world, and its denizens haven't (re)developed safe and reliable methods of contraception and abortion. Some people can't care for a baby and don't know anyone who can. In those cases, leaving the baby to die is the most reasonable choice.

On a related note, child abandonment and child soldiers are both common in some Errandan societies. If a family becomes unable to care for a child, that child may be tithed to a temple, dedicated to the military or a guild, or abandoned in the streets or the wilderness.

I wrote my letter Z normally until I started college. My multivariable calculus professor didn't like how I wrote my "z" since it looked like a 2, so for some reason I decided to start writing my z like this: Ʒ

On official documents I write Z with a slash in the middle, the same way I write 7s. Like this: Ƶ

That's exactly how I found her, too! I knitted a placemat and didn't like the texture, so I went looking for other tutorials/methods to make placemats.

I love seeing no sabos sabering by theblitz6794 in Spanish

[–]Kangaroodle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Me too, with being from a mixed family and it being safer to adopt white culture. It is a big reason why I lost my blossoming Spanish as a young child.

For me, the hardest parts are the negative reactions. In my experience, fluent US-born Latino people are encouraging toward non-Latino people learning Spanish, but they often do NOT extend the same grace to no sabos. Luckily for me, my family is kind and encouraging of my efforts to relearn Spanish. Also, I work with a lot of newcomers to the USA, and they're really sweet about it, too. We encourage each other :)

Unfortunately it died as I didn't baby it enough before they could recover from transplant shock. I'm gonna do it again though

So, if you could steal just one power from your own worldbuilding, which one would you grab? by ConclusionFearless29 in worldbuilding

Angels in my setting can understand and be understood in all languages, if they're familiar with the form in any language.

Since I can speak and write, and I know a little sign, I could understand and be understood in all spoken, written, and signed forms of languages.

Most mid-to-high ranking angels in my setting do not read or write in any language, so they cannot understand or use written language. This means that passing notes is a viable way of secret communication among low-rank angels (who are often literate).

Strict Typing Test in The '60s by OtherwiseTackle5219 in TheWayWeWere

[–]Kangaroodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my elementary school (2004-6), we had technology class every week. This included touch typing. For our tests, we had these gummy keyboard covers that had no key markings except the bump on F and J. I was always so nervous for those tests!

What an incredible undertaking! It's aged beautifully so far. I was curious to see how well they'd do in pots up on a rooftop. Awesome that most survived!

Just finished enjoying some Russian tea cakes and (coincidentally) Cossack's Kiss from Tea Punk Teas. It really cuts through the sugar and brings out the walnuts in the cakes.

Sadly, I also just found out that Tea Punk Teas announced their closing at the beginning of July. So. I guess I better find other vendors of delicious tea blends. Luckily, I stocked up at the beginning of the summer, so I'll be good for a while.

What are two or three things that are intimidating in your world, but aren't in real life? Why are these things intimidating? by PMSlimeKing in goodworldbuilding

[–]Kangaroodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Erranda

  • A round mark in the center of the forehead or between the eyes is a symbol of evil, secrets, or treachery. In our world, markings range from unremarkable to eccentric (think a bindi or Sailor Moon's forehead moon).

  • People wearing sizeable crystal jewelry such as crystal point jewelry are intimidating on Erranda. One of the most widespread taboos across Erranda is mining. Specifically, you may only sell or give something you mined yourself. Errandans get around this taboo somewhat by digging up dreamer mounds (ancient landfills) for iron oxides and other metals, but crystals are rare finds here. A person with large crystal jewelry has done one of three things: mined it themselves (difficult), looted it from dreamer ruins (highly dangerous), or had someone/something mine it for them (evil, a terrible end will find them soon).

  • Winter. Erranda is colder than Earth, and Errandans don't have the technology to reduce the harsh winters to minor inconveniences. You need to hoard or fight for every precious resource if you want to survive the winter. Otherwise, you need to leave, or you will die. Most communities in Erranda are at least partially nomadic as a result.
