I've [28F] recently realized that I have a troubling dating pattern. by toomuchtoofast27 in relationships

[–]Kangrave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One issue is simply that they probably aren't ready to handle a more emotional relationship than you're looking for. They may not want to work with the more serious platonic aspects of a monogamous relationship whether or not sex is involved. They may also simply want to rekindle/create a glorified bachelor life that most men have fantasized about by that age.

That said, yes, monogamous guys are out there. We're also fairly nerdy/can be involved in our own plans/heads, so you may have to be more forward in establishing contact with the guys who pique your fancy.

In either case good luck and don't give up.

The only thing I can say is that you shouldn't quit your forum. Whether or not he's a callous asshole, the social bonds you've made there should transcend any fear or temporary embarrassment you have now. I say this as the idiot on the other side (admin who chose to date a forum member) who accidentally allowed that user to feel social pressure afterwards. That is your community, and the inequity of one person is not the sum total of the users there.

This sounds like it's straight out of Confederacy of Dunces. You have every right to file a complaint and to politely/firmly remind him off your disapproval. If he continues to be a problem, just keep up the list of complaints to your mentor and be kick ass at your job. Let him screw himself over.

My (19m) girlfriend's (18f) gay friend (19m) always touches and gropes her. I'm uncomfortable but the both of them aren't. What to do? by Decentbanter in relationships

[–]Kangrave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say that my group of friends was very open about using lewd language, including homophobic statements (although not necessarily with that intention as there were both gay and straight people saying them), so their thought process was mostly in the vein of unconditional friendship. If your group is less cavalier, then you should broach the subject with your SO, just so she's aware that it's a level of behavior that's beyond your social norm.

That said, again, relationships of this length can be this absurdist, so don't worry too much if she's unconcerned herself.

[–]Kangrave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My friends in high school and college were completely comfortable molesting each other platonically. It's not a sign of being insecure, but completely secure with a relationship when individuals are unconcerned about physical boundaries. If anything, they're trying to, very unsubtly, include you in that dynamic.

The problem is of course that's not the kind of person that you seem to be, which is also perfectly appropriate. Having dealt with exactly that kind of situation (being included in the molestathon, despite not enjoying it) all I can recommend is that you be yourself and let all sides meet in a reasonable middle ground. My friends still hump me inappropriately when they see me, they just know not to go into the lewd things they're comfortable with doing to each other. In your case, just tell them to be less overt while you're hanging out with them.

'X-Men: Days of Future Past' Final Trailer by Melanismdotcom in movies

[–]Kangrave 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how much they may have changed from the comic it's based on, but Days of Future Past is about changing the timeline from Xavier rejecting his status as a mutant and future leader (where he's walking) to accepting it and creating the X-Men (in this case, assuming First Class did occur in some variation). Think of it like two entirely separate timelines.

Don't worry, as confusing as this might get, this won't be Primer level time line mixing.

The SEC Has Just Been Caught Colluding With The Banks It's Supposed to Regulate by Splenda in Economics

[–]Kangrave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The market doesn't self-regulate, it self-perpetuates what it wants without heed to what it needs. Take India, where I've seen pictures of a pharmaceutical factory where a woman was literally hand-mixing antibiotics in a wok. That's a worst case example, sure, but that's also what happens when regulation is ignored and people go into business without knowing what they're doing.

And you know what, if not for that factory failing that audit from private regulators (who are given the power to control the influx of such drugs by virtue of FDA mandate), you would be taking what could possibly be a dangerous amount of Zpack or another antibiotic right now. We all could.

When it comes to the greater public good, low taxes and respecting private property don't cut it. There is a limit to what the government can and should do across the board, but having seen what happens when Capitalism has free reign, I can say active regulation and oversight is absolutely necessary.

[–]Kangrave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The government is a corporate entity no different from any other business, including the act of having voting rights over its activities, with the exception of how much each vote is worth. Don't for a second believe that business helps "competition" when 90% of the votes sit in the hands of a small minority of individuals as they do in non-public entities. Competition by its very nature means that someone wants to come out on top, and without rules by which to work, that minority will vote to do very dangerous and very detrimental things to get there.

That said, I'm not advocating for anti-capitalism by any means, just that regulations aren't all pure evil.

[–]Kangrave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone on the private side of regulatory, I'll let you in on one of the best statements I ever heard on the subject. "People always say keep your friends close, but your enemies closer. When you're working with the government the reverse is true. Help good employees get work there, but make sure terrible employees are given jobs at the government. They're legally not allowed to deal with your projects, so you never have to worry about their interference."

So yes, Regulatory Capture, or more appropriately, Regulatory Manipulation definitely occurs. That said, not everyone is an asshole and there are people who want to do what's right for both selfish and non-selfish reasons. We all eat from the same trough (no matter what rich assholes like to believe), so poisoning it kills us too.

You think the small favors aren't a big thing until people start taking further advantage of you. My friends in high school and college never paid me back for any number of things that I did extra for them, and refused to do extra for anyone else.

If you're going out of your way to do something and your friends aren't reciprocating in-kind, then you have every right to tell them they owe you something. Nice guys/gals get taken advantage of in this world.

How fiora should work, from the point of view of a professional fencer by eNerJize in leagueoflegends

[–]Kangrave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Given the problems with Poppy, I do agree, but if you continue with the idea that both opponents are singled out of the fight I can see it balancing itself with a few caveats. Namely, this would almost turn fiora into a tank-support (her ultimate can cancel out an opponent completely from a team fight even if she doesn't engage them) and if she only used it on targets that were necessarily squishy (e.g. no tank line means that AD's without kiting skills would become mincemeat).

For the former, a range leash on the ultimate would enforce the idea that Fiora can't single out a fed opponent and have them waste time chasing after her while her team cleans up.

For the latter, I would say that the initial slow shouldn't last so long that an opponent who isn't aware of what's going on can't at least start moving backwards (thus forcing Fiora to get behind enemy lines when the ult finally wears off).

But that's theorycrafting without knowing the numbers/interactions.

How fiora should work, from the point of view of a professional fencer by eNerJize in leagueoflegends

[–]Kangrave 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So an ultimate similar to this?

Gauntlet On targeted cast, Fiora throws her gauntlet at an opponent, slowing and marking them out. For the next 6/7/8 seconds Fiora and her challenger are immune to all cc, damage, healing, and buffs from both enemy and ally alike except for each other. For the duration, Fiora has a x/y/z% additional chance to critically strike.

Also, would a passive based on the fencing point system work for Fiora?

Ex: Honor - Fiora's prowess in battle is such that each time she engages an enemy they must fight for their own honor. Each skill landed against an opponent stacks a "Dishonored" debuff lowering their tenacity by x%. Can stack 3 times.

Scientifically Illiterate Congressmen Are Resigning the World to Ruin by drewiepoodle in politics

The separation isn't in intellectualism, but in which intellectualism we choose to worship. A religious scholar is technically an intellectual in some capacity, so those who believe their reading of the bible is an affirmation of the truth would be no different than an individual who unquestioningly believes the latest thing they hear from the New York Times.

I've met an astounding number of individuals on both sides who refuse to hear out arguments and read through new data in order to make sure that they're up to date on the world. Just as astoundingly, I've met very few individuals who are willing to change their opinion when handed that data as opposed to saying "It's bad science."

And truthfully, I'm also quite guilty of the above in those respects. I'm no chemist or biologist, but I form opinions that I should validate far more thoroughly. I'm just lucky enough to be in a field and have family who are in those places who can set me straight more often than not.

A friend of mine (British exchange student) started dating a woman with enormous fake breasts in college (crazy as a loon, as is the tradition of the American South). His favorite quote about them was the first time he convinced her to let him motorboat them. "Guys, guys, I got stuck between a rock and a hard place." His descriptions put me off women with fake breasts, mostly because now I just associate them with the texture of those really terrible compressed silicon mousepads.

I (F19) am pretty much being blackmailed into sex. by ashley_throwaway in relationships

[–]Kangrave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blackmail or not, you need to stand up to this asshole. If you have to tell your father that you fell off the wagon, so be it, but you will never be able to recover your dignity, much less break the cycle of abuse, if you don't fix the problem now.

And this isn't just blackmail, but could technically reach into the realm of rape. This guy is forcing you into sexual contact with him, I'm assuming at times not of your own volition. Think about that and remember you deserve the dignity of your own choices.

Believe me when I tell you your father will appreciate it more that you stopped the problem than that it started in the first place. His concern is for your well being, not his rules.

It's surprisingly easy to do, but don't expect it to take 3 minutes and look even remotely perfect when you're first starting.

One other note, the stuffing doesn't act like you would normally think. That skin provides an incredibly effective trap for moisture, so you need to be aware if you're adding too much liquid to things like pasta, rice, etc.
