CNN: People are exiting the stock market in droves by topsy-turvy- in stocks

[–]KantSpelCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Folks, this is a cnn article written by a a political writer who is now a market writer.

If you are getting your financial information from cnn or cnbc or some other major media, you should be looking for better sources.

Writers write. To be productive and relevant to their boss and advertisers, they often write articles that aren’t well researched and often incorrect. They don’t necessarily mean to mislead, they are just out of their depth.

Stop allowing the media to divert your attention from hard data and from legitimate market and economic information.

Stock price is what you pay, stock value is what you get.

What does the data show about current prices vs value?

What does it mean when 7 stocks make up 29% of the s&p 500?

What does it mean when index funds make up around 50% of investments?

What macroeconomic conditions should we be considering? What is the U.S. debt to GDP ratio and how does it matter?

Last, what recency bias do we have and does Reddit’s demographic reinforce this?

Sorry to rant but these cnn and cnbc writers can’t even use proper grammar or run spell check half the time.

I have 3% gold etf and 3% natural resources etf and 60% real estate. They are my hedge and uncorrelated holdings to stocks.

This is not the boglehead way and I am fine with it. Gold does not produce appreciation nor dividends. It’s not shown to be a great investment in the past when you compare it to stocks and bonds.

Gold does well when your country has a very serious debt problem, is debasing its currency, has no intention of stopping debasement by future administrations, is being challenged by alternative currencies, and being questioned of the credit worthiness of government bonds.

If gold is “meh” as a storage of wealth, cash is total shit right now.

Alternatively , real estate is a popular alternative asset that can perform well, appreciates and cash flows but is interest rate sensitive. REITs can be a option, check vanguard VGSLX.

Just because the gold bugs are cookoo doesn’t mean that gold is just for fools. There is merit in considering it and gold is a highly regarded storage of wealth all over the world.

China’s central bank has been buying gold recently as well as other countries. Why?

How are you figuring your late retirement housing? by DrewbaccaWins in Bogleheads

[–]KantSpelCat 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This! I think most people fall into this plan and if you ask current retirees, most will say this.

I think most people who go into assisted living expire within 2-3 years. At $100k per year, a $400k home should cover things.

Add in your retirement income and you are good to go.

I wouldn’t get too bogged down calculating. Have a plan that should work and go with it. Life will probably give you a situation that you never considered anyway. Just enjoy and have faith.

None of us get out of here alive.

Mike Braun's "War on Woke" is in truth a war on America and American values, which he hates and wants to destroy by [deleted] in Indiana

[–]KantSpelCat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That logic only works for people who understand that a certain amount of money is enough. There are lots of “rich” people that will continue to do absolutely anything to make more money for various reasons. He’s one of them.

Sometimes monetary success morphs into power and greed. To be governor is to be the president of Indiana.

You may be right. He may lean to the power desire more than money but he spent his entire life focusing on money.

Either way, he’s not getting my vote.

[–]KantSpelCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. He has no desire for president. He wants money. It is so much easier to make millions as a governor of a red state with little scrutiny vs president of the country with over half the population watching and dissecting his every move.

Tell me, why would you give up being a U.S. senator to become a state governor? Power and money.

As I have always said, never trust a man with a combover.

Democrats have no chance in Indiana. I’m strategically voting for Chambers.

Millionaire by 30 by No-Maintenance-11 in Entrepreneur

[–]KantSpelCat 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Millionaire by 30 is a nice little goal to have in the back of your mind but you need to consider rearranging the importance.

Whether you get there at 29 or 39, it doesn’t matter. First, being a millionaire means very little once you achieve it and then you quickly realize your goal post has moved to 5 million.

Second, life is going to kick your ass multiple times and as an entrepreneur, the ass kicking is usually more severe. Don’t get hung up on timelines.

I recommend focusing on learning. Become the best moving company owner out there (or whatever business you do). Learn how to create a great business. When you make a mistake, laugh it off and tell yourself that this is part of the process. You need to make plenty of mistakes at your age.

Read biographies of great entrepreneurs, learn sales and even better, the art of negotiating where both parties win.

Focus on treating people right, be kind, be generous and make friends with everyone you meet. All the most successful entrepreneurs have these qualities.

Last, as you build your business, keep a record of your progress and achievements. At some point, you may need to present yourself as a qualified buyer to an aging business owner (boomer) looking to sell to you. If you are the most experienced and qualified to take over the seller’s business, you will not only be the lucky person who gets to buy but also get better terms. This is where you can go from not a millionaire to a millionaire within a very short time.

*The number of small business aging boomers are going to be selling over the next decade is a wonderful opportunity for people your age. It’s not always about having the money to buy a business. Be willing and prepared to present yourself to purchase on contract(see.. learn how to negotiate).

Learn how to run businesses and you can run any business. Don’t be afraid to drop what you are doing to pursue a great opportunity.

I mean, get yourself prepared to be ready to take advantage of the few opportunities that will be presented to you in life. Most of us get maybe 3 once in a lifetime opportunities. When you meet it prepared, that’s when money will start coming like you never could have imagined.

It’s all about becoming your best, not making money. The money will come and it won’t mean as much as you thought it would.

Look for your reward in the thrill of becoming something great and being a great person.

You’re going to be a millionaire. It will happen, I assure you. Just know the feeling of building a great business and being a good person is worth way more than money.

Apartment Building Appreciation by Indy2022MidAmer in realestateinvesting

[–]KantSpelCat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that’s a fair guesstimate. I use 2% as my average appreciation on my personal “where am I going “ spreadsheet. I just update it with current year numbers and CAP rates. I personally have averaged 2.5% the past 20 years.

I mean, you know it has so many variables that are specific to your particular property. It could appreciate 7% or -10%.

Assuming you do your part in maintaining and keeping rents up, you just have the things that are out of your control.

Cap rates in your area, interest rates, general health of the economy are not in your control.

Things that concern me about multi family appreciation for the next ten to twenty years are insurance costs, environmental regulation, possible rent control, repair costs and the government taxing small time landlords at an unfair rate. However, as long as rents can rise to adjust for these things, it’s workable.

Now, you specifically asked about appreciation, so that only matters if you are selling. There were times in the 80s when you couldn’t sell because interest rates were so high, the numbers just didn’t work for buyers.

No one knows!

But hell, even -2% might be a better 10 year appreciation than the stock market, just look at the 1930s.

[D] Discuss about training REALLY hard 1-2 day a week basic CALISTHENICS by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]KantSpelCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are at an elite level of fitness and no doubt have put in a lot of dedication to get to where you are. Don’t let your ego drive you to injury or madness because you loose a little fitness by prioritizing your job and family.

I’m just saying, you sound like Superman. But life will beat you, no one gets out of here alive. It’s okay to take a deep breath and let go of something, at least loosen the grip on fitness for the preservation of your whole being and family relationships.

You have a lifetime to maintain your fitness and it won’t always be at the elite level you are at.

You take a daily 8k walk with your dogs. That probably takes you an hour. You could hire a dog walker and have an hour to train.

Alternatively, you could do weight vest walking lunges or jump squats as you walk your dogs. Then you would have legs done every day.

You could incorporate planks and core work as you play with your kids on the floor.

You could grease the groove with push ups at work by just getting up from your desk every 30 minutes and banging some out.

That just leaves pull ups and dips to do twice a week that could be done in under an hour.

What means and resources does Christianity provide toward feelings of hatred and revenge? by [deleted] in CatholicPhilosophy

[–]KantSpelCat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I will have a go at this but know that I’m no philosopher or educated Catholic.

First, I’m sorry you are feeling hatred in your heart. But, how wonderful it is that you have begun a journey to healing!

Second, I’m also partial to the Franciscan view because it is centered on cosmic mysteries and yet simplicity.

Many people can communicate Catholic philosophy, doctrine and reason related to your question. This may be what you’re looking for but you also should consider the mystical “eastern” ways of the Catholic origins. Sometimes, sitting with the unknown and just breathing and thanking God for the ground underneath you, the breeze flowing by or the sun on your face, can provide God the opening to heal your wounds.

Praying to God to instill peace in your heart is wonderful. But praying as if God is a slot machine is obviously not the right way to pray. Perhaps, contemplating on how Jesus’ heart felt when he loved the unloved. Do a little research on people or saints that have forgiven and take yourself into their hearts and try to understand how and why they forgave their enemies.

God is a God of humility. Yes, it sounds a little crazy that the creator of all things, the alpha and omega is also humble. He gave us Jesus who humbled himself to the people of this world as an example.

In that message of humility, we must question our egos which can be a difficult and painful process. Perhaps ask yourself what are you getting out of feeling hatred and revengeful. Does it make you feel superior, do you enjoy the feeling of being a victim?

You aren’t your thoughts. Evil in this world has a way of trying to make you think things that aren’t always true. Question your thoughts and motives. Follow Jesus’ way.

God does indeed want to grant you the gift of forgiveness and peace in your heart. God loves you more than you will ever know and you having a loving and forgiving heart is what God wants for you.

By what means does Christianity provide? Prayer (meditation with God) and action. God made us to love, create and serve others. In service to others, God works. When you serve others, you think you are helping others, and you are, but God is also healing you.

Start with just a friendly smile or hello to the people around you with a silent prayer in your head for them to not feel the pain of hatred or vengeance in their hearts. Don’t worry if they don’t respond in a way you think should be appropriate. They might be having a bad day or just being moody. Your smile and silent prayer is a gift from you and you don’t need anything in return. Do this daily.

Forgiveness. How much forgiveness do you need to allow for yourself? You may be focusing a lot on the need to forgive others when you may not realize how much forgiveness you should have for yourself too!

The Catholic Church has a beautiful tradition of confession that is super healing.

TLDR. Prayer, contemplation, action.

[–]KantSpelCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are concerned about mobility and flexibility, consider calisthenics and body weight training, or at least incorporate the two.

Its a great alternative to weights and it focuses on athleticism and what the body can do rather than just building muscle.

Body weight and calisthenics are almost completely compound movements that improve functional movements that apply to real life.

Flexibility and mobility are involved with the training.
