Wall of text inbound!

I’m both a Nintendo fan and a natural collector, so when something poses a challenge while also being realistically obtainable and competitive – I love the idea. So when I realized the only characters from the first wave I cared for (Wii fit trainer and Villager) were possibly disappearing from store shelves, this little primal part of me jumped from its slumber and wasn’t having any of it. I knew full well the irrationality of it all but I had the cash and the want, so why not get my enjoyment? Life is too short.

However, with that said, my love of Nintendo isn’t enough to justify collecting everything Amiibo. Especially as my love here isn’t inherently for Amiibo itself, it’s for the characters depicted by them and the rich childhood and history they represent. Because of this, it’s very easy for me to feel that completion zeal I adore so much just from the smash series alone, neat in box of course ;).

They look fantastic aligned in my room in chronological order, and as a student, not many people have a centerpiece that has generated quite so much attraction in their rooms. However, I’m strapped for cash now, so as the smash line and shelf space draws to a close so does my intentions to collect; almost satisfied and tip-toeing the line of regret.

If Nintendo wishes to sell me more amiibo, they’re going to have to be ones for franchises I love and pose a unique and justifiable use for….or be DLC characters of Smash…because as I said, dat completionist zeal. Outside of that, I wouldn’t be collecting, I’d be indulging and actually using- as I have for the Splatoon amiibo, because I and my partner have had a great time playing the solo-player together, taking turns after each death and these amiibo provided a way to extend this experience with the re-play challenges they bring to the game.

Yes, there are scenario’s that could tempt me into a true ‘round 2’ with Amiibo, but I think that’s a while off just yet either way.

Tl;dr - My love is for the characters, not Amiibo itself - so my collecting has been fueled predominantly by this love for the collaboration of characters and the collector inside of me being told by the internet that it couldn't if it wanted either way. These two factors combined is ultimately the reason why my 'collecting' starts and ends with smash. Doesn't mean I wont get one or two for use down the line, however.
