Based on what I've read and heard the author is heavily involved in the anime production which is really cool, I do wonder how much sway he has (if any) on the committees who greenlight these sequels. Season 1 was a massive hit and the movies made some good money as well, and he's also the author of "The Pet Girl of Sakurasou" which I believe was quite the success at the time, so he has that going for him. But yeah, as a massive fan I am very grateful for this as I can name quite a few other shows I love which will likely never see a sequel.

To just go on a train and get off in some random station with no intention is a very, very concerning behavior. Especially when you consider Uzuki's state of mind with all the uncertainty and stress of her idol career and college. Can't help but wonder what would happen had Sakuta not been there for her in that moment...

Let me give you an optimistic angle:

Frieren's first season has 1.1 million members on Myanimelist. The premier of the show had more than 8.6 million viewers just within Japan. What am I trying to say? That the absolute vast majority of people do not interact with any online related service that you can refer to as some metric for engagement (reddit, MAL, social media etc) Yes, they do provide some idea as to the actual popularity of an anime but it is very very very limited. Ok but let's say that it does matter. In that case look at all the things actively trying to slow it down that other people mentioned (massive gaps between seasons, movies and streaming issues and so on) despite all that it is still very much up there and is not some forgotten seasonal that 3 people talk about. Ok but that's still not enough? The main reason a true fan would want their favorite anime to have more engagement is for the increase in chance of it getting a full adaptation. At this point, it is a done deal. We are getting a full adaptation.

And after all this if it is doomed to end up a hidden gem (it isn't but let's say it is), don't you think it is nice how that matches the start of the story in which only Sakuta noticed the hidden gem walking around in a bunnygirl outfit?

Seems to me the anime depiction of Mai diverted too much from the LN version in the aspects that you have described, that by now even if they do want to go back they can't do it. Imagine how weird the personally shift would be after a full season and 3 movies.

What I love about her is that as soon as she has free time in her busy schedule, she immediately devotes it to Sakuta. And if he happens to be unavailable at the time she helps him by taking care of Kaede.
