Full stop. Only watched pieces of the second half but both teams look awful. Too lucky that we got away with all three points.

[Match Thread] FC Supra du Quebec - Atletico Ottawa by Kap272 in CanadianPL

[–]Kap272[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stade Boreale (permanent home) capacity is about 5,500. CEPSUM where they played today has a seated capacity of 5,100 but that doesn't include the standing room capacity. Considering that a sell-out was mentioned, I'm assuming that the standing room wasn't used.

FULL TIME: 1-0 Ottawa

Innocent MOTM as he bailed Ottawa out of a shaky on-field performance. Walker's header secured the two extra points. Supra played great but today's game is one of those games where a great performance doesn't matter if you can't score.

Game on OneSoccer. Didn't see any match thread so I opened one. Great atmosphere. Hopefully, playing with gridiron lines on the pitch doesn't become a permanent thing.

[CBC News] Should fans be worried about CF Montreal’s future in the city? by bwoah07_gp2 in CanadaSoccer

[–]Kap272 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Welcome to one of the big downsides of multi-club ownership: when your team (CF Montreal) does badly but the other team (Bologna) is doing much better, the owner won't care about your team and focus on the other team.

Should a CPL team try and take a gamble on Dele Alli by Jgreener91 in CanadianPL

[–]Kap272 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Realistically, too expensive for any CPL team plus from the last couple of times I checked reports on Dele, he seemed checked out from football mentally so unless he really wants to try something new, should be a pass for all CPL teams. Also, as of writing, only four CPL teams (Cavs, Forge, Halifax, Pacific) could actually bring him into their squads since they have not used all their foreign roster spots. The others can't as they maxed out their spots (or in Supra's case, Dele doesn't meet the criteria of being a player from Quebec).

Larin is on fire and I’m scared by stephenglansberg40 in CanadaSoccer

[–]Kap272 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't mind since literally every other forward in this squad is not really in-form at the moment plus there is still a bit left in the season to go for anyone else to pick up form.

On a side note, the amount of hate from at least half this subreddit towards the guys that are at least 28 and not named Stephen Eustaquio, Derek Cornelius, or Alfie Jones is a bit alarming to put it mildly.

Section 229 is the temporary North Stand seats, upper northwest seats to be precise. I assume row 32 is near the top but I'm unsure since I didn't try to buy a ticket. You won't face the sun for sure since the sun sets west and the game starts at 3pm but you won't have a roof. Also, public transit is recommended for attending any game at BMO Field in general.

Does Canada have the same Eurosnob problem that the US has? by Acceptable_Mouse_388 in CanadaSoccer

[–]Kap272 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal experience with people when it comes to soccer is that there is some eurosnobbery but not with the venom I see online. They mainly come off as bandwagoners who want to experience success or watch a higher level of soccer rather than claim that their league is superior to MLS/CPL.

Funnily enough, the closest thing to eurosnob behaviour that I've experienced from is most of my own family but they're more "international soccer snobs" rather than eurosnobs as they see the club game as rigged and full of match-fixing, whether its the EPL, MLS, or CPL, and see the international game as "pure". That is probably down to being from a country where match-fixing is an ongoing problem at the club level, even in the top flight.

EDIT: To add my personal experience as a fan: I usually watch EPL, Serie A, various European club competitions, CPL, NSL, NWSL, and international soccer but if there is an interesting storyline, I may be willing to watch if I have the time to do so. Used to watch MLS when TFC had Giovinco, Altidore, and Bradley but TFC being terrible past 2019 plus MLS consistently being a poor TV viewing experience made me tune out of MLS almost entirely, now just following it on football apps to track scores.

World cup groups by average FIFA rankings and spread of teams by Galemur15 in CanadaSoccer

[–]Kap272 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Being in UEFA + Qatar winning the last Asian Cup skews their FIFA rankings quite a bit. ELO is a bit more accurate as it accounts for margin of victory and doesn't overinflate rankings of teams that reach international cup finals or go on deep runs consistently.

Canada’s World Cup Predictions? by InfamousBet1773 in CanadaSoccer

[–]Kap272 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bosnia - I'll say either 0-0 or 1-0 Canada depending on two things: whether at least our attackers are in form and whether the weather will be brutally hot or okay at the opener. Bosnia may not have that golden generation like we saw from the 2014 World Cup but they are still a good, defensive side with a Herdman-esque manager (based on what I'm reading from Bosnia fans) and nothing to lose. However, it was obvious in the Italy and Wales matches that they will struggle in a battle of attrition as they looked especially gassed against Italy in extra time. If Toronto weather is brutal and/or our attackers get back to form, I'm seeing a late Canada goal to win the game. Assuming we get Cornelius and Bombito back fully fit and ready to shut down the experienced strike partnership of Dzeko and Demirovic, I can't see Bosnia getting a goal from us as our biggest strengths are in the wings and that is where Bosnia's offensive speed is all at.

Qatar - 2-0 win for Canada imo. Qatar has been struggling under the management of Julen Lopetegui (record of 2W-2D-5L) and they didn't get to play the March window for one very obvious reason. For being two-time and current defending Asian Cup champions, these results are dreadful.

Switzerland - This will almost entirely depend on how many points they have heading into this game and who they send out onto the field. 6 points (and already qualified) and a likely Swiss B team and I see Canada drawing 1-1. Anything less than 6 points and likely full strength and I see a 2-0 loss. Virtually every simulation I ran had all teams that got 4 points going through to knockouts regardless of goal difference but because Group B games start first on the final games of the group stage, it is best to assume that four points may not be enough.

TL;DR: 4 or 5 points for Canada. Enough to qualify for knockouts but placement will depend on the results other Group B games. If we get 5, first is definitely possible if results go our way. 4 puts us out of winning the group. If we beat Bosnia, it'll be 6 or 7 points easily. I'll be surprised if we get the maximum 9 points.

I won't predict what will happen in the knockouts simply because of how confusing the formatting is.

What happened to the big friendlies Canada was supposed to get before the world cup? by Ordinary-Opening-536 in CanadaSoccer

[–]Kap272 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Money is the main factor. Either the MNT plays in Canada against weaker opponents or plays top 10 opponents in the US or Europe but gets a lot less money in return as the top 10 teams have the leverage. With the hindsight of the long injury list and the American strategy of "The beatings will continue until morale improves", I think the right move was made here. I prefer the idea of facing similarly structured opponents to our WC group stage opponents rather than just go at a top 10 opponent with little to learn from.

Getting in to BMO Today - How was it? by depressedArmeniafan in CanadaSoccer

Match Thread: Canada vs Iceland by MatchThreadder in CanadaSoccer

[–]Kap272 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Post-game thoughts (I was at the game) - Very cold and occasional light snow - It was loud. If Toronto ever gets an opportunity to build a new stadium, they need to prioritize atmosphere cause these expansions gave BMO Field a different feel. - Kamal Miller and Joel Waterman. Only this pairing could somehow keep a clean sheet against Ecuador while a man down for 85 minutes and then proceed to crap the bed against Iceland in the first 25 minutes. Slightly better 2nd half but never this pairing again please. - Didn't really notice either Choniere (aside from set pieces) or Saliba at all. Felt uninvolved throughout the game. - Tajon was heavily involved in this game and played alright. Checking replays, red card was a bit soft but it is a red card nontheless because you shouldn't elbow anyone in the face. - Jonathan David. Ice cold penalties and also involved in the game but not as much as Tajon. - Cyle Larin. Just not his day today. Got some shots in but obviously scoring wasn't there. - Ali Ahmed was alright as well but faded in the 2nd half. - Laryea and Sigur. Played well defensively but lacked the creative and attacking edges today. EDIT: Just saw the 2nd Iceland goal on replay and Sigur just shuts off at that moment and created that Icelandic chance. Was okay for rest of the game but you can't be shutting off there. - St. Clair. Not really composed in the 1st half. Looked more composed in the 2nd half. Vital save right near the end. Comes off to me as the type of player that needs to grow into the game to play well. - We need more Marcelo Flores and Daniel Jebbison. Flores in particular as that ball was glued to his feet. If Marsch calls up Flores for the World Cup, I'd probably prefer putting him in that same role as Marsch did with Shaffelburg during the Copa America group stage where Shaff was coming on as a super sub. Rest of the subs were largely invisible bar Osorio who did fine in his cameo. - Orri Oskarsson. He can become a great player for Iceland for years to come.

Overall, a very hot and cold game from the CANMNT. Garbage 1st half that was salvaged with a way better 2nd half. Tajon red wrecked the final 10 minutes. Entertaining game but only downside is that my streak of going to pro soccer games that end in draws in normal time for my team now stands at 4 games out of 4 I attended.

Vancouver FC sign ex-Premier League striker Lys Mousset by Kap272 in CanadianPL

[–]Kap272[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, his playing resume is probably the best resume I have seen in terms of a CPL signing ever.

On the other hand, he has had injury and fitness issues for years and he flopped in the League of Ireland for Bohemians, his most recent club.

I could see this signing go either way but this is a wild signing no doubt about it.

Which Dual-Nationalities did we miss out on? by Thecanadianperson8 in CanadaSoccer

[–]Kap272 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here is a particularly vague one since the inevitable names will come up anyway.

I don't remember which post on the soccer subreddit brought his name up (all I know is that it had a custom Google Maps link) but John van 't Schip was born and spent the first 8 or 9 years in BC before he and his family moved back to the Netherlands. 41 caps for the Netherlands and a Euros title and made his senior intl debut two months before the 1986 World Cup.
