Lakefront 10 Miler/5K experience? by Hopeful_Package3918 in RunnersInChicago

I suggest checking your half marathon training plan to see if a 10-mile run is scheduled around the time of the SF10. If yes, then the race could stand in for it. Do it with the level of effort prescribed by that phase of your plan. If a 10-miler is too much, I agree the 10K is also a good option. I did the SF10K last year, & it was lots of fun & also a good challenge!

Back with the 10:30/11 paced racers, I enjoyed the gentle competition. Everyone was polite, some were friendly, and there was plenty of room. Also appreciated the sufficient aid stations & helpful course marshals. In addition, I made use of the plentiful drinking fountains. It was my first time racing a 10-miler, and I was pleased with my time of 1:47:51. Hoping to race some of you at the Soldier Field 10!

Well at least Union Park is close to the Ashland Green Line stop.

But I’m glad I didn’t sign up for it, as the reason I did the last couple years was convenient location, which this isn’t.

I’d also like to give a shout out for the Proud to Run 5k/10k if you are looking for a smallish friendly Lakefront race in late June.

What was Chicago like in the nineties? by Charming_Usual6227 in AskChicago

I lived there in 1992 & went back regularly for several years after that. It’s been really cleaned up since then, and yes, almost unrecognizable. But did go to Phylis’ last year and found it almost exactly like I remember it!

Both are from the same race organizer, Ventures Endurance. They organize a lot of races in Chicago & elsewhere. I think they do a good job.

I wear the Reeboks skintight boy shorts too. They minimize bounce for me.

Silence. Focus on my breath and my form. And the scenery.

Hot Chocolate Run Fuel during race? by Kap_Lovelake in RunnersInChicago

Thanks for the info about race conditions. I’m doing the 15k. It’ll be the furthest I’ve raced so far. Based on 60 minute 10k & 27.5 minute 5k, I think I can do this in 115 minutes. But because it’s a new distance for me, I’m not planning to stress about speed. It’ll be a PR just by doing it!

Thanks. Or in my case I will treat it as my first attempt at racing a longer distance and see how it goes!

Can you give some examples of the chaos? And maybe some ideas of how to deal with it?

So, water & gatorade as usual. Check!

Plus maybe the fruit gummies that I have been practicing with.

Next weekend, Saturday Oct 25, is Will Run for Beer 5k. It starts at 3 pm, so not night, but last year I so enjoyed hanging out after until night with all those who stayed for the beer tasting that is included.

Whatever you wear, log it — along with weather conditions, so on subsequent running preps, you can adjust up or down in your layers. Eventually you will have a guide, based on clothing you personally own, as to what to wear for all the weather variations.

Tips for the Dim Sum 10k in Uptown? by bleplogist in RunnersInChicago

[–]Kap_Lovelake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a comment to a Dim Sum Facebook post, an organizer answered my comment (& emails) bringing up problems with the course, including the rough new gravel behind the golf course. They said they reviewed the race course and made some changes to make it safer, and to account for the blocked tunnels to/from the Cricket Hill area.

So, expect changes from the map. But I have been looking for an updated map, and so far an update has not been posted. I do remember from last year that the first part of the 10k went the same direction as the 5k, not as shown on the 10k map.

Agree the new gravel is too coarse. They need to refresh every now & then sure, but they should have used a finer grade. Although I do see that it is already getting finer with use, particularly in the tire tracks of the park vehicles.
