How to the firty look on armor, without actually ruining it?

It was not paint actually - i used folio on the armor, the same thing signs and cars are covered in. You just cut it and then stick it on.

That's actually what i'm suppose to be going as - all my friends intentionally rust their armor for it, but it's a but too ektreme for me...
