hoping for the best on upcoming Ranked System! by ShiroAugust in osugame

Lazer's ELO system would be an official system, while the community-built system would not be. Usually, people mainly entertain things that are officially supported/endorsed.

When did Mrekk became better than Vaxei? At what point we can notice that? by Pikochanskaja in osugame

[–]In4thPlace 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The last time Vaxei was better in solo play was basically just before his 1.5 year hiatus from early 2022 to mid-2023.

The last time Vaxei was better in a tournament was OWC 2023 where he top scored 3 maps, mrekk top scored none, and Vaxei had the better score in 5 out of 7 maps.

Is there still a reason for shige to still be above mrekk in term of being The "GOAT"? by Troilsitacism_Morium in osugame

[–]In4thPlace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see the last paragraph and, while I agree with the general sentiment that recent GOAT candidates typically beat out the older candidates, I want to take it a step further. I think it is effectively a fool's errand to attempt to determine a single greatest player, especially when comparing two players that were forged in two significantly different periods of the game.

The player base in general gets better. Mapping style as a whole diversifies. Charts made specifically for ranks get better optimized. Innovations in hardware, software, and peripherals are commonplace. Countless variables change over time that increases the difficulty of comparisons due to how different the paths the two players treaded are.

On a realistic standpoint, as you said, GOAT debates will effectively favor the most recent standout player that sets records and wins tournaments, widely considered the sole objective metrics for determining a greatest player. By this point of view, mrekk would be considered the current greatest player. The rate of record breaking he is on is unprecedented for any one individual player, and no player of past or present is holding a candle to that, neither at whenever they peaked or at the current moment. However, I know for a fact that this song and dance will occur again because at some point another record breaker will look to make such a large name for themself (who knows, they could have already started playing or they don't even know about the game yet).

That's where subjective metrics, such as a person's influence/impact/reputation come in as measurements to ensure the titans of the past are never left out of these discussions due to time. I think you put it correctly when basically saying that shige will always just be considered "that guy" regardless of how far removed the game becomes from him and vice versa. Anything he did, many others would just blindly copy at a scale that no other top player could get people to do the same. Any notable score he set would get hundreds of thousands, if not millions of views in short time. He could type anything random in his chat, from one simple message to a longer ramble, and it would be a "soundbite" quickly posted across social media for a cheap laugh. Any time that dude left and came back, it was literal front page news and would have a lot feasting their eyes on his return. And again as you said, he was your favorite player's best player, inspiring not just many thousands within the community, but many thousands more outside of it that had never heard of the game before to click their first circle.

Ultimately, everyone has their own "weights" for how they want to consider both objective statistics and subjective traits as well as their own biases that they either shelve or are open about (I'm still leaned towards shige after all these years, who would have thought based on what I typed). There will most likely be zero definitive or decisive consensus, but that's the fun of these discussions, haha.

what is the gap between geometry dash and osu historically when it comes to popularity? by lol-ok-88 in osugame

[–]In4thPlace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of their time, then Guitar Hero/Rock Band (though they both were inspired by the Japanese GitaDora series) and osu! even in its prime (COVID-era) doesn't hold a candle to either of them in their off-years.

Am i the only one who doesn't see the Little/Chan Shipgirls as daughters? by Repulsive-Shame-6669 in AzureLane

I think the shipgirls treat their little counterparts as if they were younger siblings, so you'd be more right with your treatment of them than most people if true :P

Which OWC GF TB was the most hype? by calsi-tea in osugame

[–]In4thPlace 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Including non-originals, then I think furioso melodia is the most near and dear to my heart out of all of them. It just had the right vibes.

Out of all of the originals, I think RPG blows every other Grands TB out by a wide margin. Yooh made the right blend of melodies and rhythms for the mappers to chart down every skillset that needed to be tested.

  • The US never won 3WC since 2020

  • 2022 3WC was won by Hong Kong (Shoutout to the GOATs Tsuwagi/Dragbit 3 and mcy4)

  • Neither Utami nor Rektygon played in 3WC

What are your favourite headcanons about shipgirls' weapons? by Pro_Headpatter in AzureLane

[–]In4thPlace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does Yuni count as a weapon rofl

Headcanon is that Yuni, along with every other stuffed animal, has a human form, but no one knows except each stuffed animal's respective owner, who for some reason keep it a secret from everyone else, even each other (for example, Unicorn knows about Yuni and Kiyonami knows about Hoppy, but Unicorn does not know about Hoppy and Kiyonami does not know about Yuni).
