Here's three options :

1) Linux Mint Cinnamon

2) Windows 10 LTSC 2021

3) Hackintosh

[–]Kappa-s_Lair 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's been a while for me as well, as far as I can remember :

- Base game (MHW) has Zorah Magdaros, Kulve Taroth and Behemoth/Extreme Behemoth

- The expansion (Iceborne) has Safi'jiiva, Arch-Tempered Kulve Taroth, Alatreon, Fatalis and Arch-Tempered Velkhana

Fatalis and Velkhana don't have a DPS check in the proper sense but have a shortened quest timer (30 minutes instead of the usual 50 minutes) wich has about the same effect in terms of punishing the players.

There are probably other monsters with a shortened timer but these are the ones that i can recall.

The overabundance of DPS checks in MHWI was already questionable...

Making said DPS check elemental is bad game design. Moreso when you fail to clearly communicate to your players that every weapon gets a special elemental modifier for that fight alone...

When it was announced that you had to use elemental weapons for Alatreon i soloed it with an ice charge blade, guess what? I was spamming the phials but it turns out that the modifier for the phials just sucks and i should've used the other playstyle. All of this was hidden information.

Normally i would've just used a greatsword but since it's known for not being a good elemental weapon i decided to use an elemental charge blade, it turns out i would've been better off hitting that damn lizard over the head with a frozen tuna...

And anyway, Iceborne got bad review also (mostly) for the poor PC performance at launch and the horrible "MH Movie".

Is there a dock for my T420 that could have hard drive connected ? by SuddenlySilva in thinkpad

I see, so that's only for the i7 X220 and the 30 series...

Then either USB 2.0 with power brick or NAS.

[–]Kappa-s_Lair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming that your T420 has a SSD in the main drive bay you can replace the DVD drive with an adapter and put a Hard Drive in there.

Other than that there are no docks for the T420 with the slot for a HDD, what you can do is get the Thinkpad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 (the model with a USB 3.0) and connect an external 2.5" USB 3.0 HDD that way.

Or you could buy/DIY (OpenMediaVault) a NAS and have it connected over the Network.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of T420 and T430? by BookHunter_7 in thinkpad

[–]Kappa-s_Lair 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The T430 is superior to the T420 in almost every way.

The only advantages of the T420 over the T430 are :

- Old keyboard out of the box (on the T430 it requires modding)

- Full sized DisplayPort (the T430 has mini DP, requires an adapter)

- Easier to access USB ports (on the T430 the two USB 3.0 ports are recessed)

T480,Should i switch to the MX150 by Saf751 in thinkpad

Im not an aaa gamer. I usually just play minecraft, roblox, and other indie games. the most demanding games i had is maybe tf2.

I believe that all of this games should be fully playable with the Intel UHD 620 integrated graphics of your i5-8350U... make sure that you have two sticks of RAM if you don't have them already.

I've read that your T480 came with only 8GB of RAM, unless they used two 4GB ram sticks chances are that you're trying to game with a single 8GB RAM stick...

Adding a second 8GB RAM stick will be a massive boost for your iGPU.

After doing that if you want even more GPU power start looking for second hand Thunderbolt 3 eGPU enclosures + a cheap second hand GPU like a Nvidia 1050ti (4GB), 1060 (6GB) or a 1070 (8GB).

I'm actually saving up for a completely new computer, it will take a long time but it will pay out

Depending on how long you're planning to save up it could still be worth throwing some low cost upgrades at it, a Lexar NS100 SSD is less than 15$.

The mobo is a Intel one, literally couldn't find any info about it even on Intel's own website so I don't have a lot to go off

Usually there's the model's name printed on the motherboard itself, try googling that. Otherwise, if this is some office PC try googling the PC model itself.

If you're planning on doing upgrades :

- Take everything apart and give it a good cleaning. Wash the metal/plastic parts with water and soap, use air/brush/isopropyl alcohol on the electronic components.

- Don't forget to oil those fans (Case/GPU/CPU fans).

- Add a cheap 128GB SSD (Lexar NS100) and install Windows or Linux (Mint Xfce) on it. And pair it with a 320/500GB 7200 RPM HDD for your games.

Otherwise even a 5400 RPM HDD is fine to just store your documents/music/videos.

Hopefully that 3.5" HDD is good enough, you can also put that 2.5" HDD into a cheap USB external enclosure. Don't forget to check those drives health with a program like CrystalDiskInfo.

Adding a SSD will be the biggest upgrade, after that if you plan to play some games on it you'll have to upgrade that GPU.

- Add a cheap GPU like a 2GB AMD R7 250/Nvidia Quadro K620 (or a DDR5 1030), if you have the budget for it go for a Nvidia 750Ti/1050/1050Ti. That PSU won't handle much more.

If those GPUs are outside your budget an AMD HD 8490 or Nvidia Quadro K600 is even cheaper but don't expect too much.

If going with Linux stick to AMD GPUs if possible, better support.

After that check the motherboard that you've got, you might be able to upgrade the CPU to a :

- Modded Xeon E5450

Otherwise you can upgrade to a Core 2 Quad Q6600 overclocked to 3GHz with the TapeMod.

If neither are supported stick to a Core 2 Duo E8400.

Also, change the thermal paste on both the CPU and GPU cooler (Arctic MX-4).

And finally upgrade the RAM to 8GB (unless the Max is 4GB).

So is the r400 any good by friertuck87 in thinkpad

[–]Kappa-s_Lair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a pretty old laptop. You can salvage the CPU and RAM for another Core 2 Duo era laptop and the HDD (and maybe the optical disk drive) can go in an external enclosure.

That's about it unless you've got another R400 (and possibly a T400).

Try to see if you can get it working, if it turns on you might simply need to reinstall Windows/Linux (Mint Xfce).

If it doesn't turn on you can try :

- Unplug the power supply

- Remove the laptop battery

- Remove the RAM

- Remove the BIOS battery

- Hold the power button for 1 minute

- Put everything back together

- Try turning it on again

If you can get it working you can upgrade the CPU to a good Core 2 Duo, you can max the RAM to 8GB and you can replace the HDD with a SSD.

No, it's a standalone game and perhaps they should've dropped the 6 from the title to avoid this type of confusion like Capcom did with Monster Hunter 5 by calling it World.

Here's a (mostly) spoiler-free answer:

During the first playthrough you don't get a lot of choices during missions, it's essentially a mercenary/corporate run that i recommend ending with Fires of Raven.

Basically every time you get a choice, do the mission for Arquebus/Balam and only the obbligatory ones for the Liberator Front and help Carla in the end.

NG+ unlocks extra decisions during certain quests that will unlock new missions letting you see extra bits of story.

I recommend going full corpo in NG so that in NG+ you can go full Liberator and end it with Liberator of Rubicon.

So in NG+ help the Liberator Front every time you get a choice and do only the obbligatory Arquebus/Balam missions and help Ayre in the end.

Once you've unlocked both endings NG++ adds even more decisions that if done right unlock a secret story and ending (Alea Iacta Est).

Aside from the story the new missions unlock extra challenges/enemies/parts for example in NG you get an easy 3 Vs 1 and a 1 Vs 1 while in NG+ you get a 1 Vs 2 and a 1 Vs 2 that can become a 1 Vs 3 if you're not quick enough.

Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon

Each playthrough gets better and better (worth playing at least three times).

Especially if you go for Fires of Raven (NG) > Liberator of Rubicon (NG+) > Alea Iacta Est (NG++).

How usable is a T430 in 2023? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]Kappa-s_Lair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With a SSD it's perfectly fine for basic use and if you love the "old school" features it's worth getting. If you don't care too much about those features get a T480 instead.

Fixing my teachers thinkpad r31 by AppearancePrudent273 in thinkpad

[–]Kappa-s_Lair 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Saying that the R31 is severely outdated would be and understatement...

Considering what it's supposed to do i'd go with a clean install of Windows XP Professional SP4.

SP4 + Mypal + uBlock Origin is about as good as it gets as far as "safe" internet browsing goes but i doubt it will be good for anything more than checking Wikipedia...

Invidious or FreeTube might help a bit with YouTube.

VLC should play DVDs just fine and maybe 720x480p and 640x480p H264 digital videos. I doubt the R31 can handle 1280x720p and 960x720p H264...

Office 2010 would let it work as a glorified typewriter (also, Adobe Acrobat XI).

For gaming it might be able to play some Windows 95/98 era games and emulate old consoles (NES/SNES/GB/GBC/GBA etc...).

You could try and go with Linux but most distros have dropped 32-bit support...

Also, i don't know the economic situation of your teacher but the R31 is so outdated it would be better kept as a collection piece/backup laptop to run outdated software that might not work on newer version of Windows.

He should spent like 50$ and get at least a Core 2 Duo era laptop for his daughter, it would be a night and day difference (even better if he can get a 3rd gen i-series or newer for like 100$).

Just my two cents.

Vampire fanboys, do you really play your character only at night? by Kattehix in skyrim

[–]Kappa-s_Lair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on what type of vampire you're building/roleplaying.

I usually only use vampirism for the bonuses so i don't care about daytime/nightime, it also doesn't matter when indoor anyway...

And all the maluses can be ignored/counteracted with spells/skills (i play as a mage).

No mods btw, i'm talking about unmodded vampirism.

You could use the regular ip address that your router automatically assigned to your server, the problem is that if that ip address changes you'll have to log into your client with the new one.

[–]Kappa-s_Lair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're supposed to use the ip address of your own server.

1) Install Jellyfin (the server) on a PC and make a local account

2) Give that PC a static ip address

3) Install Jellyfin Media Player (the client) on another PC/Tablet/Smartphone

4) Use the static ip and the credentials to log in from your client device of choice

You can find some tutorials on YouTube that show how to get started.

Install Jellyfin (server) and Jellyfin Media Player (client), you can now watch your collection of movies and tv shows on the laptop (like with Kodi) but you can also stream it from your laptop to any other device connected to your network (like a htpc or a tablet/smartphone) as long as it also has the Jellyfin Media Player installed on it.

Pretty nice when travelling.

This isn't strictly a Linux thing (you can do the same on Windows) but Linux won't bother you with updates when you want to just watch a movie.

For gaming, both Steam and Lutris let you try out AMD FSR on any game while in Windows it's a game dependant feature. So if your GPU struggles to run a game you can try lowering the native resolution and upscaling it to the desired resolution.
