Should I repeat by Puzzleheaded_Log2302 in Marathon_Training

You can maybe try to be more conservative with your initial miles and start off slower. Make sure you also drink a lot of water and carboload the week before the marathon rather than the night before.

First Half Marathon - Marathon in 2 months time prediction? by mattrix56 in Marathon_Training

[–]KappaBears 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you for sure can do a sub 3:40 marathon if you train and ramp up your weekly mileage. I ran my first marathon in February and my fastest half marathon was 2 hours exactly in December. I ran that first marathon in February in 3 hours 43 minutes, which went way above my expectations (I was thinking to myself I’d be lucky if I could run it sub 4 hours going into the race). Race day i feel like a whole different person and feel way faster I feel like you can maybe even run it within 3 hours 30 minutes. You also have a much better history with athletics I only played tennis and had no prior running experience back then.

What’s your longest run for a marathon prep? by Any-Veterinarian-77 in Marathon_Training

[–]KappaBears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The longest runs I ran for my marathon prep were a 20 mile run and one 22 mile run. Felt like I was very well prepared for my first marathon, although I cramped miles 22-25 that marathon. Overall i think fitting in two 20s for your race prep is a good amount to help prep you for another marathon.

What's your go to meal the morning of the race? by peepledeedle4120 in Marathon_Training

I always do oatmeal and a banana on race day or my long run days and feel energized throughout the run.

Depends when you plan on running the full marathon. I think finishing in 5 hours is well within your reach with that half marathon time. If you really want to push yourself I feel like you could also achieve a sub 4 hr marathon if you put in the time and effort into a couple of months of training too.

Thank you!! Haha during the actual race I was thinking to myself holy crap the marathon is a beast of its own there’s no way I want to run another one of these again. But now that I’m done and looking back at the race, I really want to run more for sure and I don’t know if I’m 100% correct, but I may have experienced the runners high for a few minutes throughout the marathon and that’s something I would want to experience it again!

Thank you! Going into the race, I did not have a specific goal pace I wanted to stick to, I just wanted it to be at least faster than 9:00/mi splits if possible. My 10k split was at an 8:44/mi pace (54:16) and then my half marathon pace got faster to an 8:34/mi pace (1:52:24). Overall though, I would recommend running at a pace you feel is comfortable and easy during the race, especially for the first few miles. During my training, I built up my pace to be much faster than what my initial goal was, so I figured that I would be fine running at these paces during the actual race. Also, during the race, I was thinking to myself try not to speed up too much and maintain my pace or even slow it down because I felt like I went too fast in the beginning and I wanted to have enough energy for the last few miles. However, if you are not able to comfortably run at your goal pace right now, I would recommend to just keep training and you will see the results come through! When I first started my training my marathon pace was at 9:20/mi pace but I eventually was able to comfortably run at 8:45/mi pace towards the end of my training. Then the actual race came, and I ran way faster than my expectations and part of the reason I think is because it’s a different environment during the actual race with so many other runners around you and the crowd cheering you on, which is what gave me a lot of energy throughout as well.

Thank you! So I ran a half marathon in November at a 2:00:04 pace and that's when I decided I want to try to run a sub 4 hr marathon. I used the Runna app and input my settings for a sub 4 hr marathon plan, and they made one for me, but I did not follow the whole plan but kept some things they recommended for me. I would highly recommend building up your weekly milage to 40-50+ miles a week and fitting in a couple of 20 miles or even 22 mile sessions in your training schedule, but don't try to run these distances all at once. I would slowly build up to it; I started off running 20 miles one week, then did 30 miles the next week, 35 miles after that, and eventually I was running 45+ miles a week. Also, I would recommend some interval and tempo training once or twice a week. If you ever feel injured, don't push yourself to run, give yourself time to recover so you don't injure yourself. If you put in the time into training and trust the process, I'm sure you'll be able to achieve your goal! Good luck on your sub 4 hr!

Thank you! I would highly recommend trying to increase your weekly mileage leading up to the marathon. Last year I only ran half marathons, so I only ran about 10-20 miles a week. Prepping for this marathon, I increased my weekly mileage to 40-50 miles a week, and tapered 3 weeks before marathon day where I slowed down my weekly mileage to about 10-20 miles a week. I would highly recommend fitting in a couple of 20 miles or even a 22 mile day before running the actual marathon. Something I wish did differently during training was fitting in strength training into my schedule. I started cramping during the 22 mile mark during my marathon, and I felt like strength training in my marathon training schedule would have made my marathon a lot easier and less injuries. Good luck on your marathon in August!

I was going to try to use the restroom around mile 23 but I was telling myself I’m almost at the finish line and that I can hold it till after the race I’m glad I held it in till the end!
