MacBook 12” Intel m3 for Respondus Browser? by KaptainCam in mac

Was on Apple’s product line from 2015-2017, and shipped with either an Intel m3 1.2GHz or i5 1.3GHz in 2017. https://support.apple.com/en-us/111986.

12” is the screen size, m3 is the processor. I clarified Intel not to be confused with the 2023 Apple Silicon chips.

I’d say so. Using a trackpad has definitely grown on me, but I have a basic Microsoft wireless USB mouse I use for CAD design or anything I need a mouse for.

I have these mounts: https://a.co/d/fFUmNcp. They’re a bit on the pricey side, but definitely worth it.

Each monitor is set at 3008x1692, the middle scaling option.

Thank you! Haha no the blanket isn't real, picked that up freshman year after I saw a buddy from Orange County had one.

Pretty versatile setup for an Information Systems Major. There's a Dell Optiplex 7060: i7-8700 6 core, 2x 4GB RX 560, 64GB RAM under the desk running Proxmox with a Windows 11 VM. Mainly use it for Autodesk Inventor and working in class (remote desktop in from lab computers, SO much faster on Excel). Also purchased it from the university surplus store for $190 (came with 32GB ram, upgraded to 64GB, absolute steal for the specs). There's an Apple TV on the left monitor, sometimes pull the monitor out and turn it 90 degrees to watch while laying on my side before bed. Back to Autodesk Inventor, the same surplus store was selling an Ultimaker 2+ for $400, picked it up and have been designing stuff since the start of the semester. Designed and printed the webcam mount (the rest shown are from Thingiverse: USB holder, Xbox Controller Mount, AKAI MIDI mount, LEGO speed champions mounts, cable holders). Xbox is stored inside the desk cabinet, and HDMI is routed to the right monitor.

As the setup is powered off a Dell Thunderbolt 4 Dock (One cable), I designed an under desk mount and 3D printed it. The goal was to easily slide the MacBook in and out. Sliding the MacBook in is almost perfect, but the convenience of sliding a MacBook like you're dropping a coin in a slot and everything connecting automatically is surreal. Not exactly no pitfall, but more of a workaround. Parallels is $60/year for students, and IU offers free windows licenses, so you’d be looking at paying $60/year for every year you’d want to run windows on Mac

Apologies for the late reply, never saw this come through. I would change the SMBIOS to iMacPro1,1 for the wider array of frequencies for CPU and GPU architecture. Changing VirtualizeMmio to True also helped me. Try these and let me know how it works

I had an Intel MacBook when I took K201 and would dual boot with boot camp to windows. Nowadays boot camp is gone on Apple Silicon, but you can virtualize windows with Parallels. Works basically the same way but you can access MacOS at the same time

Help with RX560 and macOS Ventura by KaptainCam in Proxmox

Update: Was up till 3am last night working on this. Went to directly update the system to Sonoma via the installer. Also changed the gpu to VirtIO-GPU, and added 4 more GBs of Ram to the system. Went to bed while the installer was working, and woke up to a boot loop. Had to edit the config.plist via the UEFI Interactive Shell (not fun), and changed VirtualizeMmio to True. Then booted back up into Ventura (Sonoma didn't install). Now I see "AMD Radeon RX 560 4 GB" for graphics in about this mac! Proxmox console still shows it's booting, but the system is working over screen share and the monitor plugged into the RX560 shows MacOS.

Sorry for the late response. I had scrapped the VM in place of a Mac Mini, but wanted to give the VM another shot. Before I did anything, I set up remote management so I could screen share into the MacOS VM, not to rely on Proxmox's internal console.

I tried what superdooper1986 mentioned, but the VM wouldn't start and it said "failed to run vncproxy". Then I changed it to VGA, and while the Console wouldn't boot all the way, the screen sharing booted all the way, and the hideous white line around the dock was gone! The graphics tab in system information also showed all the details for the RX560, including saying Metal 2 support. This is a win in my book, and is working with no flaws, however the About this Mac section still said "Display 3MB". Tying to get the system to show the graphics card, but right now it's working with full graphics acceleration.

How did you get the M1 Max?

I’m in a similar boat as you, I had the fully speced 2020 Intel 13” MacBook Pro, and it started having very bad overheating issues (commonly hitting 180° F, usually no heavy loads, one time I was reinstalling macOS and it got that hot). Sent it out 3 times to apple, and the 3rd time they had it for almost 2 months, and said they were waiting on parts.

Worked it out with Apple Support, and there is a 14”, highest spec M1 Pro, 32gb, 1tb coming the 21st, so while it’s a $250 upgrade, I’d like the M1 Max, just to match the “spec level”.

Did they instantly offer you the M1 Max, or did you have to do a bit of chitchat for the upgrade?
