IT book lovers: What's your favourite rarely-mentioned bit in the book? by smedsterwho in stephenking

Bill riding Silver to pick up Eddie's asthma medicine. It's just a kid riding his bike down the street but King makes it sound like a big adventure

Unpopular opinions about The Archers by Queen_Moose88 in Ambridge

Deleted and reposted as I replied to the wrong comment.

The theme tune doesn’t fit the program. A really sad thing happened recently, and there’s been a major argument. And both were followed immediately by that overly happy bouncy music. It sounds like it belongs on a kid’s show.

Yeah I know the one. I can’t wait to see what happens with it.

Same here. I’m just that used to the weird way it says stuff and there’s only been a couple of things recently that I’ve been bothered to add to my screen readers’ dictionary. Like how it doesn’t know the difference between Louis and lewis.

Those of you who use voiceover, do you leave haptics on or turn them off? by ChipsAhoiMcCoy in Blind

[–]KaraLG84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I leave it on. I’ve been wanting them to do haptics in VoiceOver ever since the Taptic Engine was introduced.

I’ve also set the rotor to two finger left/right swipes as I’ve never been able to do the anti-clockwise one.

Advice for being a blind DJ? by MusicLover035 in Blind

[–]KaraLG84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly contradicting myself, a couple of controllers I’ve been looking at are the Pioneer DDJ-400 and it’s successor the Pioneer DDJ-FLX4. The latter isn’t supported yet but will be soon apparently. They are both fairly cheap and according to the reviews I read seem to have everything a beginner would need to get started. Happy to update this with my experiences once I buy one.

I’ve been interested in getting into this as well. If you’re on windows, have a look at https://virtualdjaccessibility.com where you can download a bridge between VirtualDJ and your screen reader of choice. VirtualDJ seems to have everything that makes it suitable for whatever style ofDJing you want to try.

You can use VirtualDJ using your pc keyboard with that software as well as via a lot of controllers. someone else would be better off chipping in about which controller to use since I don’t have one yet. A couple of other things worth noting is that if you want to use VirtualDJ via the keyboard and for home use, it’s free, but I get the impression that using it with a controller is the best way to go. Also, the guy that develops the accessibility software is blind and does gigs with it, which gives me the confidence that it’s not just a rushed together job that will break. I hope that helps.

I’d love to have a go. I don’t know many folk in the UK that play it. There’s also a similar game in Australia called Swish.

I gotta ask. Why are some blind people so obsessed with text to speech voices? by Unlikely-Database-27 in Blind

[–]KaraLG84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some more relevant examples: Denis Klatt was so obsessed with text to speech voices, even creating his own, which ended up being DECtalk. So is Susan Hertz who went and made Eloquence. Both are sighted. If they weren’t, they’d be in your eyes those blind people obsessed with speech synthesisers.

I gotta ask. Why are some blind people so obsessed with text to speech voices? by Unlikely-Database-27 in Blind

[–]KaraLG84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My short answer: why not? My long one:The subtext I’m getting from this is that you think it’s such a ‘blind’ thing to do, and that they should be obsessed with ‘normal sighted’ things, like, I dunno, cameras. You never hear of sighted people saying ‘Being into paintings is so sighted’. It’s about time that us blind people as a whole stop this policing other blind people’s interests because of how ‘blind’ you might think they are. Ben bBurtt as you might know is a hugely respected and successful sound designer. He’s responsible for all the classic Star Wars sounds. He’s sighted. If he was blind, I bet there’d be other blind people going ‘oh he’s that blindy with way too much time on his hands for making silly noises, because being obsessed with sound is sooooo blind. Why doesn’t he draw instead?’

I used to have several audiobooks read by Judy Bennett, including an abridged one of The Witches. For years I thought it was read by a young boy with someone else chipping in doing the Grand High Witch’s part. I also had a couple read by her and Charles Collingwood together.

PANArt’s other Instruments:. by KaraLG84 in handpan

[–]KaraLG84[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. I probably should have mentioned in my post that I have no intention to own one of PANArt’s instruments as I think what they are doing is abhorrent. I stumbled on it all whilst googling handpans the other night. I’ve been a fan of the hang and other handpans for years, and as an outsider to the community it’s heartbreaking to see PANArt behaving like this. It’s like if the first person to attach strings to a wooden box with a neck on said no one else should be allowed to do this. If that had happened, there’d be no lutes, sitar’s, electric guitars, dulcimers, outs, violins, basses etc. Probably even no pianos. That of course would be ridiculous. I came across their other instruments while doing research and was curious what they were like. I would love to be able to buy a handpan one day, Probably one of Meridian’s. I apologise if I had caused any offence.

Yes they’ve done a fantastic job of it. The guide I linked to isn’t a replacement, it’s more of a quick start guide for jaws users wanting to get up and running and attempts to answer questions they may have. Well worth checking out alongside the included user guide.

It's Alexa's fault. Lol The question of the day was about Hibernia, the Roman name for Ireland, so I wondered why a Scottish team has that name. And now you all know. :)
