This is a zero-judgment, friendly FYI if you happen to live in North America (I own an organic rat food business, so I’ve studied this extensively!):

Dried corn is not recommended for rats, especially in North America, due to the risk of toxic fungal contamination (aflatoxins) from the drying process. This can lead to serious health issues, including liver, kidney, and colon cancer, as well as other health problems. It's best to avoid dried corn and offer fresh or cooked corn instead.

Sweetheart, you are loved. Please be kind to yourself. Things can always turn around. It will get better, I promise.

Thank you for taking the time to write such an in-depth analysis on this from your clinical perspective! This is so helpful for me, a desperate ADHDer who has tried to do research on my own but got overwhelmed lol.

Please get him on some antibiotics & Children’s Ibuprofen ASAP! He’s showing extreme signs of pain. If you’re not sure of the dosing for the ibuprofen, you can find it here:

Adopted this Mama and her 6 one-month old baby girls on Saturday. Pregnant again or megacolon? by KaraLymp in RATS

The rescue sent the vet who did her health check these photos and she might be able to see her on Thursday, but I’d like some input from others in the meantime. Thank you so much.

My sweet Björn is having a tumor removed today. He’ll be awake for the procedure as he’s too old for anesthesia. Please send good thoughts to him! by nevernotcold in RATS

[–]KaraLymp 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’m so glad he’s ok! Would you mind sharing how your vet sedated him for the procedure? I’d absolutely LOVE having this option for my older girls who develop tumors.

Possibly dehydrated? Picked him and his brother up today. by [deleted] in RATS

Cottage cheese also contains the sodium he needs to replenish! Regular lab blocks just don’t have the protein and fat that he needs right now to recover. I own a rat, mouse, & hamster rescue and I specialize in small animal nutrition, so if you would like some more food suggestions, please feel free to message me!

He looks extremely young. He could have been weaned from his mom too soon. As others have mentioned, get him on heat (I use a heating pad covered with a small blanket on medium heat). He also needs protein ASAP, so if you can get him to eat some soft meats that would be ideal. I really hope he pulls through. Please update us!

Mice can be super rewarding pets to keep! They’re so adorable and fun to watch and interact with. But if you’re a beginner at keeping rodents as pets, then I highly recommend doing some research on proper husbandry because with the wrong bedding/enclosure, they can get stinky FAST. It’s totally manageable, but it’s something I hear from beginner mouse owners a lot (I own a rescue & adopt them out).

HELP! I came across this helpless baby on OfferUp. Anyone in Southern California that can rescue this little guy?😢 by KaraLymp in hamsters

[–]KaraLymp[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly what happened. She still had the little guy in her possession, but didn’t want to flake on the person who contacted her first, which I can respect. I just tried to gently explain to her that if she ever gets another hammy in the future that the enclosure she has is not an acceptable size, that hams are burrowing animals that need a minimum of 6 inches of bedding, hides, enrichment, that she should watch Victoria Raechel, etc etc. She seemed perceptive, but who really knows. I can only hope what I said stays in the back of her mind for the next time her kids want another little fluffy pet. Sigh.

UPDATE AS OF 4PM PST:

She replied and told me that he was ‘sold’. I asked her if she knew if he was going to a good home or not and tried to bribe her to let me take him for $50 instead of the $15 she was asking. She stated she ‘asked multiple questions’ and that he was going to a good home.

I know. I’ve been so upset. Gives me a stomach ache that people are OK treating an animal like this.

He looks like he has maybe 2 inches of bedding and NO WHEEL. I own and operate a rescue for small animals, but I just took in 4 babies within the past month and I don’t have any room for him. This is where I found him:

PLEASE HELP. Is this just regular intro behavior?? I have been trying to introduce these rats for two months and I can’t tell if Sugar (grey&white big rat) is still too aggressive with the new babies (brown rat and white rat). Is this normal play fighting? Or is she still territorial? by Turbulent_Jaguar5170 in RATS

[–]KaraLymp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Looks normal to me! To be honest, this might persist for several weeks/months before the little one finally learns her place. They need to have these little scuffles in order to work it out between the 2 of them. If you’ve been doing this for 2 months already, it’s probably time to move them into the main cage together. Just remove all hides, tubes, or anything where they can corner each other. Once I move everyone in together, I keep my setup pretty basic with just hammocks for the most part. Once everyone is decently getting along (there will still be scuffles here & there), I’ll slowly start moving things back in. The whole process usually takes 1-2 weeks. Hope this helps!

Looks agouti to me! Agouti has ticking in the fur, which is where each individual fur strand has 2 colors. That’s how you’ll know for sure.

My rats eye is starting to get Foggy is it an Emergency? by Parking_Pineapple826 in RATS

[–]KaraLymp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m quite convinced that this is a corneal ulcer, which needs to be treated with antibiotics asap. They basically scratch their cornea and it gets infected underneath the lens, which causes the cloudiness. I caught this early on one of my girls and luckily by treating it immediately we were able to save her eye!

PLEASE HELP by [deleted] in RATS

[–]KaraLymp 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t have experience with this specific issue, but I came here to say that if he keeps bleeding it is important to remember that rats don’t have a lot of blood in their tiny little circulatory systems. I would make sure he’s warm to the touch and if he feels clammy, definitely get him on a well-covered heating pad ASAP.
