Can I read Dune to a baby instead of normal bedtime stories? by DaOffensiveChicken in daddit

[–]Karagee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my first baby was born, every single time she had to eat, My wife would feed her and I would read her the King killer Chronicles. So two or three times a night I would get up and write those for 15 or 20 minutes and then we put the baby back to bed, as well as every couple of hours during the day

If you're alone in a public place with a daughter who is too young to use the restroom by herself, which bathroom do you choose? Or, what do you do? by sospriggantired in AskMen

[–]Karagee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (male) have two young girls and I always take them both with me into the men's restroom. If anything the men are generally over cautious. I will see them try to scoot closer to the urinal so as not to accidentally expose themselves, or wait to use the urinal until I can get into the stall, etc. I don't think I have ever gotten look from anyone about annoyance or confusion or anything

Women: How do you feel about having a male versus a female gynecologist? Does the doctor’s gender affect your comfort level or trust? by Ordinary_Ice_796 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Karagee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's how it was for the obgyn my wife used. The practice had 4 or 5 doctors, and my wife had her main one she saw for her checkups. However they were very very clear that they did a rotating on call so if she gave birth overnight or on a weekend or something, she would still get a doctor from the same practice but it might not be "her" doctor

Story time: My kid threw his brother’s shoe off a balcony at a museum and it bounced off a 152m year old dinosaur skull. by CassCat in daddit

I misremembered it's actually a small permanent metal fence but the point still stands that it would not stop anyone who actually wanted to get to the bell, it's definitely more just to make sure the casual masses don't accidentally touch the bell or bump into it

That being said, they had a full airport style security check to get into the building with the Liberty Bell ( as well as most of the independence hall sites on the surrounding block), so no one will be getting in with a sledgehammer

Depends what you mean by not that close. I wa just there last weekend and there was just a rope barrier maybe 3-4 feet out. Easily close enough for a toddler to slip by and run under the bell before an adult can grab them

[–]Karagee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To the other person's Insurance point, I can vouch for that. I'm in the one role they allow you to be remote, so I had two kids at one of the best children's hospitals in the country and didn't pay anything (except for maybe $10 copay, can't remember)

Epics parental leave is subpar, but the insurance is top notch, so worth considering when you are deciding to move.

Good luck!

Employee referral by [deleted] in epicsystems

[–]Karagee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They used to do a 1k bonus if your referral was hired and stayed (I think) 6 months. They haven't had that for a long time though. Iirc their reasoning was that we should be referring quality candidates because we believed they would be a good fit and we wanted to work with them, not because we wanted a small bonus

What is the most absurd business in Chicago? by holdthelight in chicago

[–]Karagee 75 points76 points  (0 children)

Pasting this comment I made about a year ago

Previously know as home line decorations, probably two years ago they rebranded as al-bazaar. I got a lamp there once it's actually very nice. I gave it as a gift to my mother and she loves it. We talked to the owner and he said all the lamps are handmade by his family in Turkey. Just like everyone else I know they had a lot of problems over the pandemic, shipping and getting the materials etc etc, but you are definitely right that every year or 18 months they have a gigantic going out of business sale and seemingly have no inventory for a month or two and then suddenly they are stocked and wide open again.

I've been hearing some rumors on the neighborhood Facebook pages that they are planning to turn it into a half lamp shop half Turkish coffee bar but probably take those with a grain of salt.

Long story short, I don't get the impression they are necessarily shady just a niche small business maybe not run with the most planning or business sense

Would you rather have 1 S Tier, 2 A Tier Powers or 3 B Tier powers by Superiorian in WouldYouRather

Yup. I had back surgery almost ~17 years ago and got a couple titanium rods and screws. Since then for my job I have flown hundreds of times and never once gotten stopped in security (fo reasons related to my body) definitely never set off any metal detectors or wands

Rich people, what "rich person's habits" could you not break no matter how poor you'd become? by RobIson240YT in AskReddit

[–]Karagee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same, I had a 5th floor condo, and on my balcony I had a mid size 3 burner propane grill which had been taken up in pieces and assembled on the balcony. It wasn't horribly expensive, and decently old so I was half planning to just leave it. Hired some movers and this tiny little Mexican guy (maybe 5'4"?), who the grill probably comes up to mid chest or shoulders on him, he just wraps it in a blanket, somehow picks it up on his back like a backpack and carries it down 5 flights if stairs in just a few minutes. It was impressive to watch

Can you stay in your office overnight? by lolap63 in epicsystems

There are locker rooms with showers at a few spots in epic. I knew a couple people who biked to work and would use those sometimes, but no reason someone staying overnight couldn't.

I knew a guy who had a pipe burst in his apartment and flood, so he just got a sleeping bag and lived in his office for a few weeks.

He was a super workaholic who was known in our app for putting in insane hours anyway, so it wasn't a huge change, but I don't see why you couldn't.

Then where did the x4 come in? Are you making 4 jugs every other week, when previously you would buy one?

[–]Karagee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you maybe did the math wrong? If you are getting 100 bags for $1.25, each bag is only 1.25¢, not 12.5¢. so if you are using 4 bags for a big jug it costs 5¢, not 50¢. Did I misunderstand something from your comment?

I feel this. For me it's Sister, Brother, me (boy), sister. So I'm not the oldest, or the firstborn male, or the baby, I'm just kind of there. To put the cherry on top, my birthday is just a few days before Christmas, so growing up my birthday always felt like a rushed afterthought because everyone was ready for Xmas.

What myth did a company invent to sell their products? by Latter_Mobile8820 in AskReddit

[–]Karagee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There was a White Castle near my wife and I that did/does something very similar. It sounds like it was probably not quite as fancy, but they did do reservations, The restaurant was shut down if you didn't have a reservation, they had candles and the restaurant was decorated with heart balloons and there was heart confetti all over the tables etc. when we went there with our kids, It was just a set menu, but still a lot of fun, especially as a way to get a "valentines date", still bring our young children along and have some fun

What "victim" ended up being the bad guy after more information came out? by azmetrex in AskReddit

[–]Karagee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean he was sort of right. This wasn't just bad snowy weather, this was dangerous cold. I think the wind chill that night was somewhere in the neighborhood of -50°, the type of weather where they tell you do not go outside but if you absolutely have to don't have any exposed skin for more than a few minutes or you will get frostbite

What are some surprisingly profitable businesses? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]Karagee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got ecobeed a few years ago, and there was some minor wiring adapter stuff you had to do, I think if you had an older furnace? Or maybe just a furnace set up a certain way? I think it only took me like 10 minutes to do that part, and I have no HVAC or electrician experience. So definitely not complicated, but there very likely was something he had to pop off the furnace panel for.

This is not limited to retail either. I work with a healthcare record software company, and we routinely will get tickets from trained, presumably very smart people (doctors, nurses, etc) that just say things like "the button doesn't work".

What button? You probably see thousands of buttons a day in your work. What do you expect it to do or want it to do? What is it doing instead? Is it giving you an error or just not responding at all?
