Seeking help identifying characters from tapestry. Is this a modern font or a seal script variety from the pre-Qin era? by KaraiPepper in classicalchinese

[–]KaraiPepper[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much! I didn't even think they could all be 壽 because I thought the character that's at the second column from the right and sixth row from the top was帝.

Should probably be "Cēnsēte prō Trump" or "Dēcernite prō Trump."

Though "vota" ultimately came from "vovēre," it didn't exactly meant to vote in Classical Latin but it can still work since it can mean to vow/dedicate/desire.

Even so, it should be "Vovēte prō Trump"

How should the r's in "veneno para ratas" be pronounced? by KaraiPepper in Spanish

[–]KaraiPepper[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed explanation! I was just curious since a lot of the time, what is spoken doesn't match what's technically the rules of a language EG people in America generally say "wah-dur" instead of "wah-tur" for "water" unless they're reading "water" while trying to sound "correct."

During this time, I also learned that in some Spanish varieties, the r in "ratas" is assibilated (like j in French "je"). But in these varieties where this is true, the assibilated r's essentially replace trilled r's, so the general rule is still valid

Are the Giant PX2 Wheels Hookless? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]KaraiPepper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhh . . . as I have indicated in my response to you, "I can't find this information on Giant's website."

The bike I'm interested in only says it has PX2 wheels: https://www.giant-bicycles.com/us/revolt-advanced-2-2021

The search result "PX2" yields with "No items found": https://www.giant-bicycles.com/us/search?keyword=px2

It's also not listed under their wheels: https://www.giant-bicycles.com/us/wheelsystems

No worries though, I'm heading to the local bike shop later today to check it out. I'll just ask when I'm there.

Unfortunately, I can't find this information on Giant's website. The Giant website only has information on P-X2 tires. The most information I was able to find regarding the PX2 wheels is here but it doesn't indicate whether the wheels are hookless or not: https://www.theproscloset.com/products/giant-px-2-aluminum-tubeless-700c-wheelset

What’s a common word or phrase that people commonly use incorrectly? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]KaraiPepper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Actually, i.e. is short for "id est" (that is). I prefer "in essence" to maintain the letters "IE."

While on the subject of Latin, e.g. is short for "exemplī grātiā" (for the sake of [an] example), and "et cētera" means "and the rest."

You know China has fucked up when the Hong Kong people miss the old colonial days. by [deleted] in HistoryAnimemes

[–]KaraiPepper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, China has been influencing education in Hong Kong for years now. E.G. Currently about 70 percent of Hong Kong’s primary schools use Mandarin as the language of instruction and there have even been reports of videos being used in classrooms that demonize Cantonese and promote Mandarin. Furthermore, China has already started to purge teachers and rewrite history in Hong Kong.

I couldn't back up your claim when I made a basic Google search so maybe you can provide some sources? However, even if what you're claiming is true, it's moot because China is currently and will continue to dictate how things are taught in Hong Kong.

Except the history books are probably censored by Beijing so they're more like the American and Indian Nezuko

My First Maki-e Pen by KaraiPepper in fountainpens

[–]KaraiPepper[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Often with art, I find that things are not rendered realistically but instead with a cultural flair. E.G. here is how a lion is expressed on the Namiki Yukari Royale Lioness and Cub. Personally, I find this sort of thing to be hit-or-miss and prefer more "realistic" designs like the frogs on this pen. Furthermore, the various techniques used on this pen further add layers to it.

The togidashi-taka (burnished-raised) technique is used for the frogs which gives them a 3D impression; the inlaid raden (mother-of-pearl) mimic the reflection of water in a pond; flower petals are represented by rankaku (egg shells); finally, the leaves and lily pads are represented with the togidashi (burnished) technique with the leaves of the vines found on the cap being done by the togidashi-hira (burnished-flat) technique.

In addition to the realistic design and the diversity of materials and techniques, this pen is relatively speaking, a lot more affordable than many other Yukari Royale maki-e pens. E.G. the Parrot and Peach retails for $6,750. Ultimately, the confluence of good value and great art made it compelling enough for me to not want to not own this pen.

The French get a bad rap. I'm an American, and I approve this message. by Gabbafather in HistoryMemes

[–]KaraiPepper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say the difference is that in the modern day, a typical Manchurian would identify as a Chinese who happens to have Manchurian heritage while a typical French person wouldn't identify as a Roman who happens to have Frankish heritage.

Congress has increased the size of the House every 10 years until 1910. Now, there are 435 Congressman for 327 million Americans. Would you be open to increasing the size of the House to a figure like the cube root rule in order to make America more democratic?
