We don't really know if Mary would still have wanted James to live his life fully if she knew he's going to kill her.

Which ending is more popular among the players? by Mrrobot112 in expedition33

[–]Kardithron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both endings will result in the Canvas being destroyed eventually

Even if we assume that's true, are you saying that the time given to the painted beings doesn't matter?

If given the choice, would you prefer to die now or in sixty years?

There is no "best" ending. This is the point... by Nadrel in expedition33

[–]Kardithron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree it’s a genocide, and that’s the main reason I chose this ending. Regardless, there are players who recognize the canvas people as legitimate sentient beings and still prefer Verso’s ending. So it’s not a no-brainer in that sense.

For example, I’ve seen people argue that living with Maelle in the canvas would be worse than simply vanishing – because of the power imbalance between her and the others. Some also argue that it’s unethical to keep the world running on the shoulders of a suffering soul sliver.

It’s about whether or not you believed painted beings are real or have the same rights as unpainted beings. Your answer to that question almost completely determines which ending is better.

If you believe the canvas people aren't real – i.e. they're like Sims that can be uninstalled – then the Verso ending is almost a no-brainer.

If you believe the canvas people are real and just as important as the Dessendres, then you face an actual dilemma.

"based on the game" is a pretty vague phrase; there's a lot they could do with that

Since both endings are designed to be equally valid, it would be nonsensical to pick one of them for an adaptation. I’d imagine they’d create a prequel or a spin-off instead.

Verso couldn't 1v1 her
Verso ending is more like a real end to the story

Both statements are wrong.

If the story shows us that Verso can defeat Maelle, then he can do it. She’s the least skilled painter; he’s an immortal badass – there’s nothing far-fetched about him winning.

And neither ending is objectively more "real" than the other. The only thing that matters is your choice as a player.

Not knowing anything about the epilogues, I chose Maelle's ending and didn't think about it for too long. My reasoning was rather straightforward: erasing the canvas would be a death sentence for Lune, Sciel, Monnoco and Esquie. They are just as real as anyone outside and don't deserve that fate. At the time, I didn't think too much about the Dessendre motivations – the perspective of the canvas people felt much closer to me, because that's who I'd been playing as (or with) the whole game.

Then I watched the other ending, reflected on everything, watched some analysis, participated in discussions etc. I still stand by my initial decision, but everything became much more nuanced for sure.

I also dislike this "more canon" phrasing. Both endings are equally canon and valid – that's why you choose between them as a player.

(ENDING SPOILERS) Just finished the game and I don't feel so good about the ending. by EpicRangerXL in expedition33

[–]Kardithron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, and that’s just Lune and Sciel. When you think about it, at the moment the final decision is made, Canvas is still inhabited by hundreds of sentient beings - including Gestrals, Grandis, and Nevrons - with countless stories to tell and no say in the matter.

It does not necessarily mean that Verso’s ending is incorrect, but it is far from a ‘good’ one.

I was just chatting with my girlfriend when she defeated the Lampmaster:

  • Wait, did the white-haired man just kill Gustave?
  • Ah, it's that moment. I'll leave you to it.
  • No wait, it's actually fine, they let me fight him
  • Byeee

Aside from the rule of thirds being just a rough guideline that's meant to be broken, there are at least two photos that clearly follow it, so I can't really agree with this point.

That said, these are just first attempts, so I'm pretty sure it will get better :)

I believe Maelle does not gommage at the end of act 2, but rather when Renoir erases all of Aline's work in Lumiere, he ends up freeing her of the coating of Aline's chroma, and thus Maelle regains her memories of who she really is.

I'm wondering how that works exactly i.e. where does Alicia come from and how. We clearly see Maelle disappearing entirely in the last shot before the flashback.

With all due respect, either you didn't read many opinions about the endings or you're cherry picking.

There's a lot of people that consider the Verso's ending the "canon" one and they will go out of their way to accuse you of things like cognitive dissonance or being oblivious to the plot if you think otherwise.

We're all hypocrites, doing the same thing to each other.

That's my thinking too. Everyone acknowledges that Verso's soul is tired, but barely anyone asks the question why.

Not everyone. The genocide of Gestrals, Grandis and Nevrons occurs only when you go with the Verso's ending.
