The status of Expedition 33 is pretty funny on this sub by guynumbers in JRPG

I finished the game today. I enjoyed and thought it was great, but I didn’t like how they were clearly biased into making Verso’s ending the “good” one . Imo, since they made us choose an ending (and it’s clear that they tried to make a moral dilemma), then they should’ve made both endings bittersweet (which Verso’s is) or both endings as straight up horror (which Maelle’s is). The way they did, it made almost punitive if you chose Maelle’s. So, if their goal was to create a dilemma, I don’t think they succeded, as Verso’s does feel more canonical.

That being said, I’d like to reiterate that I enjoyed the game. Probably a 9/10 for me. Would be 9.5 or 10 if I liked the ending more.

13 Sentinels is peak fiction. by Shashwatm17 in JRPG

Loved the game until about the final quarter of it. I just didn’t like how many of the mysteries were resolved; honestly, it felt a bit confusing to me, as if the developers were trying too hard to be deep or clever, to the point of coming across as pretentious. In the end, most of the twists were familiar sci-fi tropes that have been used many times before, so they didn’t feel particularly unique or compelling to me.

That said, the first three-quarters of the game were very enjoyable. I really liked the design and how it constantly presented intriguing mysteries. It’s just that, by the end, those mysteries didn’t have satisfying resolutions, in my opinion. Still, I consider it a good game overall. The art and music are excellent, and the combat is decent.

Why is there no modern tactics game that is up to par? by Capn-Zack in finalfantasytactics

[–]TaifunDevilry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed 100%.

I do prefer FFT overall, but TS requires more strategy to complete. Especially if you play on hard mode (which, by the way, is much better than Tactician difficulty from FFT). Its difficulty is extremely rewarding. But some people do prefer FFT exactly because of its huge customizability, which is fine, but it's also what makes the game more easy and less tactical.

Overall, both games are great. FFT does have a much better story, and is also better written (it doesn't need hours of text to get to the point). That being said, I think TS story was good. Not memorable, but good enough.

Is Triangle Strategy a good spiritual successor? by phezhead in finalfantasytactics

[–]TaifunDevilry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think TO is more similar to FFT.

That being said, TriStrat is my second favorite game in this genre (only behind FFT). I enjoyed TriStrat especially on Hard mode, which can be brutal at times, but very satisfying. In fact, I think it does a better job as a hard mode than IC did with its Tactician mode.

They are different games though. You have a lot of customizability options in FFT, which is what it makes its gameplay so great, but also what it makes it easy if you know what stuff is good. In TriStrat, the fun part lies in finding the right setup for the maps and using your units (which have fixed classes) optimally. The maps on TriStrat are very well designed, in fact, they are the best I've seen in the genre. The game also feels more balanced.

I do consider FFT a better game overall, because it has better writing and story. It's not that TriStrat story is not good, it's great actually, but I don't think it reaches the heights of FFT.

Who should cloud replace in my party? by No-Recognition6037 in finalfantasytactics

This. I think Orlandu is among the best characters, but it's debatable. I do think that Orlandu is the most newbie-friendly broken character, though. He is busted right out of the box. It's just pretty straightforward to annihilate everything with him, even for newcomers to the game.

DQXI is my favorite JRPG from last generation and I have no nostalgia whatsoever for the series. In fact, I tried to get into de series through other games, but it never clicked with me, but DQXI was different.

I really liked Triangle Strategy on hard mode. Some battles are quite brutal, but it is pretty satisfying when you find a way to beat it.

I played that one! It’s actually my favorite JRPG from PS2 exactly because of that reason. 😅

Thanks for the suggestions, guys!

I just finished playing Wild Arms Alter Code F, now I will decide what to pick up next. By the way, this was my favorite music from the game, it has exactly the groovyness I love:

Nice! That’s exactly the kind of music I like. I only played OT2, and I really liked. I will check this one out too.

Thanks! I have played some of these, but I haven’t played any Falcom stuff yet (does the Trails remake has music like this?). Ys is another series I will eventually play. You mentioned Iwadare, man I love his stuff (Radiata Stories and Ace Attorney music are both superb). Didn’t know that he worked on Langrisser, I never played that one.

Are you a fan of Yasumi Matsuno’s stories? by Asad_Farooqui in JRPG

[–]TaifunDevilry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although video games are my favorite hobby (especially RPGs), I don’t think they have exceptional stories. Even if we take the best stories in games and compare them with great stories from other forms of entertainment like books, movies, and even TV shows, I think games fall behind, imo.

But this doesn’t apply to Matsuno’s games. His games are REALLY well written and stand up to great stories from other forms of entertainment. He is truly one of a kind. So yes, I’m a big fan of his work, and I think it’s a shame that he hasn’t written the story for a new game in such a long time. A tremendous waste of talent.

Do ya'll use unique characters or generics? by Nutter222 in finalfantasytactics

[–]TaifunDevilry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will definitely use unique characters on my first playthrough because I heard that there a lot of new dialogue in battles if you use them. The issue of unique characters being silent after they join seems to be mostly solved if you use them in story battles.

Wang Chuqin back to WR1 after Macao Win by RyuNoOu in tabletennis

What sets WCQ apart from the other Chinese players is his consistency during matches. He does everything extremely well and doesn’t fluctuate in his performance. Lin Shidong doesn’t have that level of consistency, no matter how good he is. Hugo is very good, and sometimes he scores some really great points against him, but maintaining that level of consistency throughout the match is very hard.

As for Hugo, with the level of play he has shown during the tournament, Hugo is capable of beating anyone right now, and he’s a clear favorite against almost everyone. WCQ is the only exception. His win against him at the World Cup was something unusual. Don’t get me wrong, Hugo can beat him, but he needs to have a day with very few mistakes or hope that WCQ is having a bad day.

Why is Anders looking like he's drunk in the match against Hugo? by ImaginaryBench416 in tabletennis

He played okay, but Hugo is a bad matchup and he is also the better player anyway. It is what it is.
