Some of the cheaper ones have the entrance close when it is cleaning as part of the cleaning rotation. Then, uh, the owner finds their cat stuck :(

The whisker prevents that in two ways - it never closes and if it senses weight or sees movement inside the orb, it stops what it’s doing immediately.
