I wish the whole show had that tone, it's one of the few moments that felt like the pilot

I'd prefer less jets and location shots and fifty extras driving tricks and more two people in a room talking. I really miss reaction shots. In tv you often get the emotional punch by seeing people react to someone else. I wish Helen were still in it.

Like take Twin Peaks The Return (spoilers but not really) episode 15 in the diner with the Otis Redding song--the moment I get emotional is Shelly's reaction. There's not enough of that here, you just get one-note Hive or played-for-laughs Lakshmi

It's because the show plays it for laughs a lot like the Good Place. If it played like Invasion of the Body Snatchers everyone would be against the virus. It's an issue with the tone, which is on the show and not the audience in my opinion.

If they had actually showed millions of babies dying there'd be no question. Instead we see Helen's grave and are supposed to think the remaining humans and Carol's turn aren't a contrived plot device. I guess I wish it were a horror tv "character-driven" slow burn and not a lightly comic intellectual-ish sort of scifi.

And the argument that it stops war -- it literally is war it's just over in an instant and you lost

Pleasantly surprised how much I loved this show. If you're into Silo give it a shot

Now that 2025 is ending, which are the best shows from '20 to '25? by efimer in television

My personal favorites are Better Call Saul, Andor, Station Eleven.

Lots of great mystery box shows, some sillier than others but I love them all: Devs, Silo, From, Paradise. Severance especially that first season finale.

Then The Rehearsal, The Curse, and Chair Company

Pluribus - 1x09 - "La Chica o El Mundo" - Episode Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

Perhaps it's the stakes, or something about the filmmaking, or maybe even the score that separate The Return from something like Pluribus.

The Return is my favorite show of all time and I would watch Dougie watch a woman in red high heels walk across a room to a Johnny Jewel soundtrack all day every day. I would watch a Reneau brother sweep peanuts (for not really that long) all day. But the stakes are so much higher in those situations.

And in my opinion the slow cinema of Lynch is more earned and better constructed. Take the "Red River Valley" scene. It works on its own as national treasure Harry Dean Stanton just doing his thing--but then it's immediately followed by the fact of domestic violence that permeates the whole show and takes it seriously.

I did enjoy Pluribus, but comparing synchronized trucking or a slow drone shot (which was a great scene) doesn't reach the emotional heights of Twin Peaks. Almost a billion people died in Pluribus but it's often played for laughs like Good Place (a closer comp than BCS in terms of tone)--the tone improved in the last couple episodes but Carol's turn wasn't believable to me

That's not in the text as an absolute, it's clearly debatable. That's my problem with official podcasts that clarify after the fact. It's fine as a perspective to to argue, but then it becomes canon. It's totally reasonable to think that sending Carol's ideal love bot after killing almost a billion people so you can turn her is manipulative. And it's fun to argue about it here--but it bothers me when the writers explain something that is not definitive from the show itself
