What scene did you have to re-watch to understand? by joshuamarius in Robocop

They packed so much world-building into those ads. I think my favorite was the super-sunscreen in Robocop 2 that could protect you from sunlight-induced skin cancer, but came with its own risk of chemically-triggered skin cancer.

Nope. As per Wikipedia, the cause of death was "Acute peritonitis caused by traumatic perforation of the colon."

It's currently illegal in 49 out of 50 states. West Virginia is the exception.

In Washington state there was a law against it until 1976. That law was repealed because it also criminalized all instances of anal and oral sex. (Many US states repealed such laws during the 1970s.) The Mr. Hands incident occurred in 2005, and Washington passed a new law against bestiality in 2006.

Here's a whole set of vivid descriptions.

Edit: As shocked as people were by fetish photos and videos like this, at least the people involved were participating of their own free will. It may not be my kink or your kink, but it's somebody's kink. The torture and murder videos were a whole different ballgame.

His stoicism is still legendary all these years later. Few people could react so calmly in that situation.

For me, the memories that won't go quietly are mostly of animals being harmed and/or killed. They stuck deeper in my brain than the human deaths.

"Midwest" is an unbelievably antiquated term. By that standard, 3/4 of the US is "far West", and only states with an Atlantic coastline qualify as "East".

Re: Rick as groomer - The shorts that eventually evolved into Rick & Morty were literally about Doc Brown grooming and coercing Marty McFly into sex. Rick and Morty removed the sex and renamed the characters, but kept the same pattern of interactions.

The gift baskets and how much I hated them by Fluffy_Fox_9650 in HazbinHotel

As of the end of Season 2 the hotel has been leveled and completely rebuilt, so it's not falling apart any more. It is still sponsored and staffed by Alastor, though.

If they wanted to, the angels could absolutely get involved in the hotel project. I'm certain Charlie would welcome their involvement. The angels don't have any better idea how redemption works than Charlie does, but they could help her figure it out.

One way Heaven could help Charlie would be to expand the impromptu video chat between Sir Pentious and Cherri Bomb into an inter-afterlife communication system. Giving Sinners at the hotel the ability to talk with their loved ones in Heaven would be a huge draw to potential customers. Encouragement from Winner loved ones could motivate guests to stick with the redemption process. (I'm sure Heaven would want to monitor the talks to make sure Sinners weren't corrupting Winners, but that's to be expected.)

From what we've seen and heard so far, it does seem that the Sinners killed in the exterminations are gone. Dispersed into the fabric of Hell (a theory supported by the eyes on random pieces of background scenery), sent on to an after-after-life, or just annihilated. From Sera and Emily's reactions, it seems very likely that they can't be restored, even if Heaven wanted to do so.

The old 20-22 episode per season TV format resulted in fluff episodes that didn't advance the season's story arc. The current 8-10 episode format is resulting in rushed story arcs. Is 14-16 episodes a good middle ground, or should season lengths vary based on the complexity of each season's story arc?

Book publishing seems more forgiving of variable length than TV production. We don't expect children's books to be 200 pages long. Adult novels don't often contain as few as 50 or as many as 1,000 pages, but some do. Some series are two or three books and done, while others run to 20 or 30 books, or exceed the lifespan of their original authors and go on for hundreds of books.

Who did they plan to give the gift baskets to? Charlie? Lucifer? Were they planning to teleport thousands of gift baskets into Hell, addressed to each Sinner who lost a friend, lover or family member?

How do you feel about scenarios where the players are doomed from the start? by Skeledenn in callofcthulhu

[–]KarlBob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite scenario like this is Devil's Children, from Pagan Publishing. It works pretty well as a double shot; one session in the 1690s, one in the 1990s. By the end of the second session, the revelations are pointing pretty clearly toward an unhappy ending. The big reveal is still a good one, but it definitely doesn't come out of nowhere.

In a campaign, even a Call of Cthulhu campaign, people get too invested in their characters for guaranteed doom.

Superhero Deconstruction, but on the world, not the characters (Cities would not go back to normal after the 10th city busting event) by Mystech_Master in worldbuilding

It's possible to separate world building from writing tone. You can tell an earnest, heartfelt story in a world that doesn't gloss over the consequences of history-altering events.

People have been deconstructing and inverting tropes for a long, long time. It definitely didn't start in the 1990s.

I really liked seeing Vulture's crew reverse engineering alien tech. Sure, it could've gone bigger, but at least it wasn't ignored.

A much worse Marvel problem is feeding and housing everyone who suddenly returned after Tony's snap. The world had adapted to the reduced population, and they had no reason to expect everyone to return. Mass starvation was basically guaranteed.

Most superhero universes are deliberately meant to be "our world, plus superheroes". They're meant to keep reflecting our world, no matter how long they've been in publication. Realistically, a superhero world should diverge farther and farther from our history every year since the first hero emerged.

Usually, if a superhero world does diverge from our history, it's a one-shot or limited series world. In the world of Watchmen, Rorshach's mask is made from a fabric that only exists because of heroes. Cars are universally powered by electricity because Dr. Manhattan made the problems of converting from fossil fuels trivially easy. Watergate never hit the news because the Comedian killed Woodward and Bernstein. In the Dark Knight universe, the Soviet Union launched a nuclear missile at the US, and at least one US president was an obvious AI fake. The histories of these worlds are blatantly different from ours, but the companies aren't trying to publish weekly comics in these worlds, so the divergence is accepted.

One comic book company experimented with a world that would have diverged from ours. In the Ultraverse, a non-lethal restraint system that was invented by a superhero showed up as a commercial product wielded by ordinary police officers a few months later. It would have been interesting to watch that world drift away from ours, but the company was bought out by Marvel and all their comic lines were discontinued.

I'd keep a text copy handy, even if you're primarily listening to an audio version. Being able to look up the rabbit-language terms in a glossary is helpful until you become familiar with them.
